Sanders, Dean of Graduate Studies Date ABSTRACT In this thesis the researcher discusses the implementation of force multipliers in the Prussian and German military. Originating with the wars of Frederick the Great and the geographical position of Prussia, force multipliers were key to the defense of the small state. As time continued, this tactic would become a mainstay for the Prussian military in the wars for German unification. Finally, they would be carried through to a grim conclusion with the Second World War and the belief that this tactic would easily make up for Germany’s shortcomings in material and manpower.

A WAR WON IN THE SKIES: AIR SUPERIORITY IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR Chandler Dugal Honors Capstone Thesis November 26, 2018 Introduction The Second World War was a conflict decided by the most advanced military technology of its time: the airplane. Conflicts throughout history reveal the trend that the victors of war are most often those who best use and produce the dominant weapon of the era. Just as artillery and the machine-gun had dominated the battlefield of the previous world war, or black-powder weapons of yesteryear, the airplane would forever change the conduct of war in the 20th century. This paper is meant to highlight the immense impact that the war in the skies had on every facet of the war.

Military History Anniversaries 16 thru 31 May Events in History over the next 15 day period that had U.S. military involvement or impacted in some way on U.S military operations or American interests May 16 1771 – The Battle of Alamance: Pre-American Revolutionary War battle between local militia and a group of rebels (The Regulators) occurs in present-day Alamance County, North Carolina. It was a protest against local taxation and corrupt government. Casualties and losses: Militia 9 to 27 killed + 61 wounded – Regulators 9 killed + 7 later executed for treason. May 16 1940 – WW2: Germany occupies Brussels, Belgium and begins invasion of France. May 16 1943 – The Holocaust: The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising ends » In Poland, the Warsaw Ghetto uprising comes to an end as Nazi soldiers gain control of Warsaw’s Jewish ghetto, blowing up the last remaining synagogue and beginning the mass deportation of the ghetto’s remaining dwellers to the Treblinka extermination camp. Shortly after the German occupation of Poland began, the Nazis forced the city’s Jewish citizens into a “ghetto” surrounded by barbed wire and armed SS guards. The Warsaw Ghetto had an area of only 840 acres but soon held almost 500,000 Jews in deplorable conditions. Disease and starvation killed thousands every month, and beginning in July 1942, 6,000 Jews a day were transferred to the Treblinka concentration camp. Although the Nazis assured the remaining Jews that their relatives and friends were being sent to work camps, word soon reached the ghetto that deportation to the camp meant extermination. An underground resistance group was established in the ghetto–the Jewish Combat Organization (ZOB)–and limited arms were acquired at great cost.

LAW REPORTS OF TRIALS OF WAR CRIMINALS Selected and prepared by THE UNITED NATIONS WAR CRIMES COMMISSION VOLUME XII THE GERMAN HIGH COMMAND TRIAL LONDON PUBLISHED FOR THE UNITED NATIONS WAR CRIMES COMMISSION BY HIS MAJESTY'S STATIONERY OFFICE 1949 Price 5S. od. net. LAW REPORTS OF TRIALS OF WAR CRIMINALS SELECTED AND PREPARED BY THE UNITED NATIONS WAR CRIMES COMMISSION I One of the aims of this series of Reports is to relate in summary form the course of the most important of the proceedings taken I' against persons accused of committing war crimes during the Second [I World War, apart from the major war criminals tried by the ,I Nuremberg and Tokyo International Military Tribunals, but ;1 'I including those tried by United States Military Tribunals at I Nuremberg. Of necessity, the trials reported in these volumes are examples only, since the trials conducted before the various Allied Courts of which the Commission has had record, number about 1,600. The trials selected for reporting, however, are ~hose which are thought to be of the greatest interest legally and in which important points of municipal and international law arose and were settled. Each report, however, contains not only the outline of the proceedings in the trial under review, but also, in a separate section headed" Notes on the Case ", such comments of an explanatory nature on the legal matters arising in that trial as it has been thought useful to include. These notes provide also, at suitable points, general summaries and analyses of the decisions of the courts on specific points of law derived primarily from a study of relevant trials already reported upon in the series.

It analyses and explains the reasons why the defenders lost despite information provided by ULTRA about the plans of the attackers and both far higher numbers and heavy weapons. Introductory Remarks In 1972 I published my first book on Greece in World War II covering the period 1936 to 1946. The book contained several chapters dealing with the Greek-Italian war in the winter of 1940 and a lengthy one describing the German attack against Greece in the spring of 1941 (Operation Marita), with only a few paragraphs referring to the invasion of Crete, Operation Mercury (Merkur ). The main weight of the book, however, was on the resistance during the occupation.1 In the 1990s I returned to the topic because I noticed that, while there were many historical accounts of the attack on Greece, they were presented according to the national standpoint of the various participants. The content of most books was restricted by the respective nationalities of the authors and there was no comprehensive description of the events based on all available material. Thus I decided to write an account including all publications in English, Greek, Italian, French and German.
