THE WORD OF GOD

Opening Acclamation and Collect for Purity Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn of Praise Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; hearts unfold like flowers before thee, praising thee, their sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away; giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

Words by Henry Van Dyke © Charles Scribner’s Sons; music by Ludwig van Beethoven © Public Domain. 1

Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Please be seated First Lesson – Jeremiah 23:1-6 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the LORD . Therefore thus says the LORD , the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD . Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the LORD . The days are surely coming, says the LORD , when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The LORD is our righteousness.” Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm – 23 (KJV) read responsively by half verse 1 The LORD is my shepherd; * I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; * he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul; * he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his Name’s sake. 4 Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; * for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; * thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, * and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Second Lesson – Ephesians 2:11-22 Remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called “the uncircumcision” by those who are called “the circumcision” – a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands – remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 2

Holy Gospel – Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 Clergy The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed. Clergy The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

After the Gospel reading potty-trained 3-year-olds through 2 nd graders are invited to follow the cross to the chapel for Children’s Chapel.

Sermon – The Rev. Tom Murray

Please stand Nicene Creed said by all We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People – Form III Father, we pray for your holy catholic Church; That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

3

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth, hear our prayers for this parish family. Strengthen the faithful, arouse the careless, and restore the penitent. Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession and Absolution please kneel or stand Clergy Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Clergy Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

Peace please pass the Peace with your neighbors by nodding and waving only Celebrant The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

Offertory Anthem – You never let go Matt and Beth Redman

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death Your perfect love is casting out fear. And even when I’m caught in the middle of the storms of this life I won’t turn back I know You are near. And I will fear no evil for my God is with me, and if my God is with me whom then shall I fear? Oh no You never let go through the calm and through the storm; oh no You never let go in ev’ry high and ev’ry low; oh no You never let go Lord You never let go of me. And I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on a glorious light beyond all compare. And there will be an end to these troubles, but until that day comes we’ll live to know You here on the earth. And I will fear…

Great Thanksgiving – Eucharistic Prayer A Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth… Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus musical setting: Jim Cowan Holy, holy, Lord, (Holy, holy, Lord) God of power and might (God of power and might) Heaven and earth are full (Heaven and earth are full) of your glory (of your glory) Hosanna (Hosanna) Hosanna (Hosanna) in the highest (in the highest) Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna (Hosanna) Hosanna (Hosanna) in the highest (in the highest)

After the Sanctus you may stand or kneel for the Eucharistic Prayer.

Celebrant Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Celebrant Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Celebrant We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. All sing three times: AMEN.

Lord’s Prayer Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread and Fraction Anthem musical setting: Andy Park Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world. Lord, have mercy (3 times) on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world. Grant us peace (3 times) Amen. Amen

Celebrant The gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. 5

Communion of the People At Holy Communion, all baptized Christians are welcome to receive. When the usher directs you, please stand and walk forward to the altar rail using the center aisle. The bread (with a drop of wine already on it) is received in the open palm as you kneel or remain standing at the rail and consumed immediately. If you wish to participate but do not want to receive the bread and wine, simply cross your arms over your chest to receive a blessing. Return to your seat using the side aisles.
