Bulletin, Proper 15, Sun., Aug. 14, 2005 Welcome to the Table! Whoever you are and wherever you’re at on your journey, ST. DAVID’S know that you are welcome here. In fact, we’re blessed to be able to host EPISCOPAL CHURCH you this morning. Thank you for being with us. You may come forward to receive a blessing if you prefer not to receive communion. Place crossed arms on your heart to signal your desire for a blessing. You may also do this if you prefer not to receive the wine. You may touch the chalice and the chalice bearer will say the words of administration. There are two stations for receiving communion at the 9:00 a.m. service - The Table. There is a standing station on the main floor; a second station is at the altar rail where you may either stand or kneel to receive Eucharist. About This Service The purpose of The Table at St. David’s is to provide a traditional, predictable liturgy with a subtle taste of the ‘pomp and circumstance’ of our Anglican/Episcopal heritage. If you’ve been to a ‘liturgical’ church before, The Table will feel very familiar. The service provides a quieter, more contemplative experience in prayer and music, with a rich appeal to the senses. Anchored with readings from Holy Scripture, the liturgy is grounded in tradition while speaking to our call as Christians today. The order of service conforms to the Book of Common Prayer and, as such, is referred to as a ‘Rite I/II’ liturgy – signifying its conformity to the liturgies of the larger Church, while honoring its creative local expression. And we always have ushers and other worshipers prepared to help you learn your way through the liturgy — so fear not! — come, enjoy! The sanctuary light is given to the glory of God by Helen Biggers in celebration of the birthdays of her children, David and Karen. THE FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT CHILDREN OF ALL AGES ARE WELCOME IN CHURCH. Felt activity bags are available from an usher. Saint David’s Day LISTENING ENHANCEMENT DEVICES are available for all services—just ask an usher for one! Those Who Serve Today March 1, 2020 Presider: The Rev. Welcome To GOOD SHEPHERD Catholic Church Menomonee Falls, WI Our Eyes Are Fixed on the Holy One, Pleading for Mercy As mortal beings, most of us in our “This is what the Lord asks of you: to act justly, lifetime are confronted and challenged to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8 with individual and societal distress: illnesses, deaths, pandemics, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, July 4, 2021 strife, even wars. Sometimes we are forewarned; sometimes we heed; sometimes we ignore. Psalm 123 is a pilgrimage psalm and composed for a time of distress. In the 1st reading and the gospel, Ezekiel and Jesus are confronted with resistant listeners. To be a prophet in the footsteps of Ezekiel and following the way of Christ, we must first listen before we speak. And, with eyes fixed on the Holy One, we see God’s fidelity, beauty, and truth. To you, my God, I lift up my eyes, you who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold like the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, Like the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress, so, our eyes look to you, O God, till you have mercy upon us. Have mercy on us, O God, have mercy, for we are filled with contempt. Too long has our soul been sated with the scorn of the arrogant, the contempt of the proud. • By Bishop Steven Biegler
Convocation 2017 NTEGRITA IWyoming Catholic CollegeS Issue 4.3 “Fire and Rock” by Most Rev. Steven R. Biegler Bishop of the Diocese of Cheyenne (Homily from the 2017 Convocation Mass, August 27th, 2017) St. Peter is an interesting choice as the Rock of the Church. So often, his mouth gets him into trouble. At times, he is proud and impetuous, a very strong presence. Other times, he’s afraid, he’s humble, and he’s repentant. When I look at Peter, I see a normal human being, and that gives me hope; if God can transform a Peter, He can transform any of us. If he can use Peter (with his weaknesses) as such a powerful witness, then He can do the same with each of us. One of the gifts Peter has received is the gift of his faith—a faith he professes so clearly and confidently, saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” In the Gospel of John, he’s even more powerful: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life....you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” That faith—seemingly so solid—crumbles so quickly with his triple denial, yet he’s the one Jesus chose to be the Rock of our Church. What is it that made Peter into the Rock of our Faith, the Rock of the Church? It is im- portant for us to reflect on that question, because the answer will guide us on our own journey. If we can understand what made Peter a rock, it will help us to have the same strong faith despite our sins and the quirkiness of our own personalities.

Marion Leonard Lived: June 9, 1881 - January 9, 1956 Worked as: film actress, producer, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Sarah Delahousse It is well known that Florence Lawrence, the first “Biograph Girl,” was frustrated in her desire to exploit her fame by the company that did not, in those years, advertise their players’ names. Lawrence is thought to have been made the first motion picture star by an ingenious ploy on the part of IMP, the studio that hired her after she left the Biograph Company. But the emphasis on the “first star” eclipses the number of popular female players who vied for stardom and the publicity gambles they took to achieve it. Eileen Bowser has argued that Lawrence was “tied with” the “Vitagraph Girl,” Florence Turner, for the honorific, “first movie star” (1990, 112). In 1909, the year after Lawrence left Biograph, Marion Leonard replaced her as the “Biograph Girl.” At the end of 1911, Leonard would be part of the trend in which favorite players began to find ways to exploit their popularity, but she went further, establishing the first “star company,” according to Karen Mahar (62). Leonard had joined the Biograph Company in 1908 after leaving the Kalem Company, where she had briefly replaced Gene Gauntier as its leading lady. Her Kalem films no longer exist nor are they included in any published filmography, and few sources touch on her pre-Biograph career. Thus it is difficult to assess her total career. However, Marion Leonard was most likely a talented player as indicated by her rapid ascension to the larger and more prominent studio.

y family is doing something rather unusual this summer, at least for us. We're selling the family home. The house itself is nothing spe- M cial. But for us this is different. It's been a part of the family for over 50 years. As a result there are special thoughts and feelings associated with every room. And of course, all of it is filled with love, the love of God EVERYTHING IN and the love of each other which has always been a part of the family. Most people can say the same things about their homes. There are memories ITS PLACE and special feelings that are a part of each room in a house. Every space rep- resents something special about family life, and all together they form and WITHIN THE describe a particular relationship among mom, dad and children. The funny thing is that the feelings, while all together express a familial love, are still specific to that particular room. A Subversive Partnership; or How a “Congregation” Affirmed a “Guerrilla of Grace”. A Case Study M. Thomasin Glover Anglican Priest Diocese of New Westminster, BC By any of our usual measures, guerrillas are a weaker force set against a superior and more organized power which exerts both subtle and blatant pressures to conform. Such pressures are not commonly or quickly perceived or interpreted as op- pressive, but frequently something in them is experienced as, at least, vaguely stifling to the spirit. Guerrillas, then, are en- gaged in the battle to reclaim some territory, or some part of life, for a higher purpose, a truer cause. To wed guerrilla with grace suggests that the truer cause is God’s kingdom. ^ Although this paper is about leadership in context, and I realize that others have reflected most ably on this area, 2 the nature of this particular context and the degree to which I ex- perienced my own theology of ministry as not only different from but often in clear and sometimes threatening opposition to the contextual norm, explains the above subtitle, taken from Ted Loder’s Guerrillas of Grace, Prayers For The Battle .
