This book is a journey from 1945 when the first atomic bomb was detonated in the New Mexico desert to where we are today. It’s an interesting and sometimes bizarre journey. It can also be horribly frightening. Today, there are enough nuclear weapons to destroy the civilized world several times over. Einstein refrigerator. But when Hitler came into power in 1933, Szilard fled to England, encouraging his friends and family to do the same. In England, he first described the nuclear chain reaction (1933) and patented an early design for a nuclear fission reactor (1934). In 1938, Szilard joined Einstein in the United States, but the rumor that a group of Berlin chemists had split the uranium atom made them so concerned that in 1939, they sent an urgent letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, warning him that that Axis scientists were working to turn new nuclear discoveries into a superweapon. -

UPSC Daily Current Affairs | Prelim Bits 10-02-2021 Immunity Passports “Immunity Passport” or “Risk-free Certificate” would enable individuals to travel or to return to work assuming that they are protected against re- infection. It attests that its bearer is immune to a contagious disease. Some governments have suggested that the detection of antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 could serve as the basis for an “immunity passport”. In a bid to ease travel restrictions amid the pandemic, countries like Denmark, Israel, UK, etc have announced ‘digital corona passport.’ With the novel coronavirus, the proposed certificates would attest one of three things: that the holder has been vaccinated; has tested negative for the virus or has recovered from it. Governments and organisations across the world are considering digital travel passes, either through an app or part of a digital wallet. This passport will tell authorities that you have been vaccinated or have tested negative for Covid, and are eligible for travel. Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority It was set up under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), as a statutory body under the Companies Act, 2013. It aims to administer the Investor Education and Protection Fund to promote Investor’s Education, Awareness and Protection. It takes various initiatives to fulfil its objectives through Investor Awareness Programmes and various other mediums like Print, Electronic, Social Media, and Community Radio etc. Secretary of the MCA is the Chairperson of the Authority and Joint Secretary of the MCA is the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority. The Physics of Nuclear Weapons While the technology behind nuclear weapons is of secondary importance to this seminar, some background is helpful when dealing with issues such as nuclear proliferation. For example, the following information will put North Korea’s uranium enrichment program in a less threatening context than has been portrayed in the mainstream media, while showing why Iran’s program is of greater concern. Those wanting more technical details on nuclear weapons can find them online, with Wikipedia’s article being a good place to start. The atomic bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were fission weapons. The nuclei of atoms consist of protons and neutrons, with the number of protons determining the element (e.g., carbon has 6 protons, while uranium has 92) and the number of neutrons determining the isotope of that element. Different isotopes of the same element have the same chemical properties, but very different nuclear properties. In particular, some isotopes tend to break apart or fission into two lighter elements, with uranium (chemical symbol U) being of particular interest. All uranium atoms have 92 protons. U-238 is the most common isotope of uranium, making up 99.3% of naturally occurring uranium. The 238 refers to the atomic weight of the isotope, which equals the total number of protons plus neutrons in its nucleus. Thus U-238 has 238 – 92 = 146 neutrons, while U-235 has 143 neutrons and makes up almost all the remaining 0.7% of naturally occurring uranium. U-234 is very rare at 0.005%, and other, even rarer isotopes exist. -

Bikini Atoll Itinerary The following is a sample itinerary of dive sites and wrecks we may visit during your liveaboard safari with Master Liveaboards in Bikini Atoll. We wish to show you the very best diving possible but a number of factors can determine where we visit. Weather, tides, currents and other factors play a part in the Cruise Director’s decision of which route the yacht takes. Whilst we attempt to ensure the number of dives we have scheduled is fulfilled, bad weather can hinder the yacht’s ability to reach a specified dive site in good time. The safety of all on board is paramount and we always do our best in offering diving at alternate locations should we be unable to visit those sites listed below. As most wrecks at Bikini Atoll are beyond recreational depth limits, this itinerary is recommended only for technical divers with previous wreck experience. Your Cruise Director will schedule 2 dives per day. The diving day has a typical schedule as follows: Breakfast followed by a briefing & Dive 1 Lunch, relaxation followed by briefing & Dive 2 Snack, relaxation, Dinner Explosive history In 1946, following the end of World War II, the United States gathered together a “mock” naval fleet in order to test the effects of atomic bomb blasts on a large naval fleet. They named it Operation Crossroads and designated Bikini Atoll to be one of the sites for the explosive tests, with the local inhabitants displaced to another atoll. More Operations followed suit; from land, on the reef, on the sea, from the air and underwater. -

All Rights Reserved. “Tickling the sleeping dragon’s tail” is a metaphor for risking severe consequences by taking an unnecessary provocative action. Its origin can be traced to the last year of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 1946. When investigating the critical mass of plutonium, LANL scientists usually brought two halves of a beryllium reflecting shell surrounding a fissile core closer together, observing the increase in reaction rate via a scintillation counter. They manually forced the two half-shells closer together by gripping them through a thumbhole at the top, while as a safety precaution, keeping the shells from completely closing by inserting shims. However, the habit of Louis Slotin was to remove the shims and keep the shells separated by manually inserting a screwdriver. Enrico Fermi is reported to have warned Slotin and others that they would be “dead within a year” if they continued this procedure. One day the screwdriver slipped, allowing the two half-shells to completely close, and the increased reflectivity drove the core toward criticality. Slotin immediately flipped the top half-shell loose with a flick of the screwdriver, but by then he had endured -

Leeds) In this Frontiers lecture I seek to explain the historical progression in understanding (research frontier) re: the transport and deposition of global fallout from nuclear tests in the Pacific (not health effects) I will cite heavily from the autobiographical book “An Environmental Odyssey” by Merril Eisenbud who provides fascinating AEC insider accounts from his perspective as Director of the Health and Safety Laboratory (HASL) during the height of the cold war period and the first thermonuclear tests in 1952, 1954 Merril Eisenbud and John Harley (US Atomic Energy Commission Health and Safety Laboratory). Chose this topic as example of period when step-change in understanding Some periods in history when the progression in understanding is particularly fast. The 1950s was a unique period in the history of the atmosphere in that the stratosphere had highly elevated concentrations of radionuclides released primarily from the US and UK thermonuclear detonations in the Pacific tests (65 years since Castle Bravo incident). US and UK thermonuclear tests in the tropics polluted the global stratosphere, whereas Soviet tests were mostly at mid to higher latitude. But this talk will focus on the Research Frontier re: global transport of the debris from the very high-yield thermonuclear tests in the Pacific, and how predictions of the recovery of the stratosphere changed between the 2 US National Academy of Science reports on the Biological Effects from Atomic Radiation (BEAR reports) in 1956 and in 1960.
