DEBATE TEAM NEWS Horseheads High School Debate had the best season ever!! The team joined an international consortium of 70 schools from 30 different countries for the 2012-2013 debate seasons. The team earned 10 wins in 15 Public Forum style debates! This was their best season in 8 years!! The team also took on new challenges as it expanded into Policy Debates, Lincoln-Douglas Debates, Model UN and UN International Criminal Courts! The team wishes to recognize and congratulate our seniors who will be deeply missed - Richard Bisso, Taylor Cole–Miller, and Patrick Mayville. Next year even more is planned as this growing club masters the art of digital meetings and debates around the globe! Students interested in joining this dynamic group for the 2013- 2014 season should contact Mrs. Brice Hyde in Room 266. MOCK TRIAL TEAM NEWS Horseheads High School Mock Trial Team capped off a stellar year on April 27th. The New York State Bar Association sponsored the Mock Trial Regional Tournament in Syracuse at the Federal Court House. Students were given a civil case this year with stipulated facts, affidavits, and evidence. The team had to formulate a case for Defense as well for the Plaintiff. Students take on the role of “real lawyers” in a courtroom lead by real New York State elected Judges. Students write their own opening statements, closing arguments, witness line of questioning, and prep witnesses who are portrayed by students. Our team represented Chemung County and were assisted by volunteers from the Chemung County Bar Association; Horseheads and Mock Trial Team Alumni, Attorney’s John Brennan and Richard Rich. They volunteered many hours to prepare our team for the big event and their dedication to our team is deeply appreciated! The team put many hours of preparation into this trial. Our team placed a formidable 6th this year. The team also participated in a consortium of 70 schools from 30 different countries in the United Nations International Criminal Court trials as well as the Texas State Mock Trial Tournament. Students interested in joining the HHS Mock Trial Team for the 2013 -2014 season should contact Mrs. Brice Hyde in Room 266! BOYS STATE Congratulations to the following Junior Boys who will be attending Boys State this year at SUNY Morrisville, June 23 through June 29, 2013: Benjamin Coble, Benjamin Morse, Nicholas James Schoonover, and Joseph Vrooman. Boys State is a program of The American Legion developed from the concept that youth should be offered a better perspective of the practical operation of government; that the individual is an integral part, and commensurately responsible, for the character and success of his government. As such, it is an activity of high educational value, born of a need for youth training in practical citizenship. Congratulations! The Squirrel Bait and Rodan genealogies continued to dominate Kentucky's and Chicago's post-rock scene during the 1990s. Half of Rodan, i.e. Tara Jane O'Neil (now on vocals and guitar) and Kevin Coultas, formed Sonora Pine with keyboardist and guitarist Sean Meadows, violinist Samara Lubelski and pianist Rachel Grimes. Their debut album, Sonora Pine (1996), basically applied Rodan's aesthetics to the format of the folk lullaby. Another member of Rodan, guitarist Jeff Mueller, formed June Of 44 (11), a sort of supergroup comprising Sonora Pine's guitarist Sean Meadows, Codeine's drummer and keyboardist Doug Scharin, and bassist and trumpet player Fred Erskine. Engine Takes To The Water (1995) signaled the evolution of "slo-core" towards a coldly neurotic form, which achieved a hypnotic and catatonic tone, besides a classic austerity, on the mini-album Tropics And Meridians (1996). Sustained by abrasive and inconclusive guitar doodling, mutant rhythm and off-key counterpoint of violin and trumpet, Four Great Points (1998) metabolized dub, raga, jazz, pop in a theater of calculated gestures.
