IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE HORSEHEADS TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT Beginning in the 2013-2014 school year the Transportation Department will be sending pick up and drop off information by email. Please make sure your child’s school has your correct email address. Information will be mailed if there is no email address on file.

SENIOR HONOR ASSEMBLY On Wednesday, June 5, 2013 almost 200 members of the Class of 2013 will be honored at the Senior Honor Assembly. These seniors have maintained an average of 85 or above throughout their high school career. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. (Honor students will receive a letter of invite in late May.) Everyone is welcome to attend!

EVERYDAY HEROES Congratulations to the 2013 WENY/First Heritage Federal Credit Union Everyday Heroes: Chad Conley, Aaron Kelly, Amber Mattice, Frankie Palmer, and Shawna Rorie. Nominated by High School staff members, the students were chosen to represent the High School as young people who embody the characteristics of an everyday hero: character, community service, overcoming obstacles, going above and beyond to better our community, and more. They will receive a $50 Visa gift card and will be honored, along with the recipients from high schools across the region, at a reception in June. Congratulations!

SENIOR BACCALAUREATE SERVICE This year’s Baccalaureate Service, Hope for the Journey, will take place in the Horseheads High School Auditorium on Monday, June 17 at 7:00pm. It is a night for the faith community to honor and bless our seniors with hope for the next exciting phase of their lives. The program includes specials by members of the senior class, great music, an engaging speaker, and a hors d’oeuvre reception in the cafeteria afterwards. Seniors and their families are welcome to attend! *Baccalaureate is not a district sponsored event and is organized by the Horseheads Coalition of Churches.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP WINNER Congratulations to Sean Bassler who has been selected as a winner of the National Merit Corning Incorporated Scholarship. About 240 companies and businesses finance National Merit Scholarships for Finalists who meet their specified criteria. Great job!

2014 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Horseheads High School students Sophia He, Benjamin Morse, Alexandria Stryker, and Carrie Wang took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and met requirements to enter the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. These high performers have shown outstanding academic potential and each of these students is among the 50,000 highest scoring participants of some 1.5 million program entrants. Congratulations!

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY REMINDER The National Honor Society Induction Ceremony will be held in the Horseheads High School Auditorium on May 22nd at 7:00pm for all current and newly appointed members. All students must report to the North Gym at 6:30 p.m. Practice will be directly after school on the 22nd. If a student does not participate in the practice, they may not participate in the ceremony.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION Do you need extra money for college that you do not have to pay back? If so, see Mrs. Kastenhuber in the Guidance Office for scholarships that are available to offset the cost of your college tuition. When walking through the halls by the Guidance Office, be sure to look at the scholarship showcase and bulletin board. These scholarships are also available for your review at www.horseheadsdistrict.com. We want to make your college experience a prosperous and successful experience.

DEBATE TEAM NEWS Horseheads High School Debate had the best season ever!! The team joined an international consortium of 70 schools from 30 different countries for the 2012-2013 debate seasons. The team earned 10 wins in 15 Public Forum style debates! This was their best season in 8 years!! The team also took on new challenges as it expanded into Policy Debates, Lincoln-Douglas Debates, Model UN and UN International Criminal Courts! The team wishes to recognize and congratulate our seniors who will be deeply missed - Richard Bisso, Taylor Cole–Miller, and Patrick Mayville. Next year even more is planned as this growing club masters the art of digital meetings and debates around the globe! Students interested in joining this dynamic group for the 2013- 2014 season should contact Mrs. Brice Hyde in Room 266. MOCK TRIAL TEAM NEWS Horseheads High School Mock Trial Team capped off a stellar year on April 27th. The New York State Bar Association sponsored the Mock Trial Regional Tournament in Syracuse at the Federal Court House. Students were given a civil case this year with stipulated facts, affidavits, and evidence. The team had to formulate a case for Defense as well for the Plaintiff. Students take on the role of “real lawyers” in a courtroom lead by real New York State elected Judges. Students write their own opening statements, closing arguments, witness line of questioning, and prep witnesses who are portrayed by students. Our team represented Chemung County and were assisted by volunteers from the Chemung County Bar Association; Horseheads and Mock Trial Team Alumni, Attorney’s John Brennan and Richard Rich. They volunteered many hours to prepare our team for the big event and their dedication to our team is deeply appreciated! The team put many hours of preparation into this trial. Our team placed a formidable 6th this year. The team also participated in a consortium of 70 schools from 30 different countries in the United Nations International Criminal Court trials as well as the Texas State Mock Trial Tournament. Students interested in joining the HHS Mock Trial Team for the 2013 -2014 season should contact Mrs. Brice Hyde in Room 266!

BOYS STATE Congratulations to the following Junior Boys who will be attending Boys State this year at SUNY Morrisville, June 23 through June 29, 2013: Benjamin Coble, Benjamin Morse, Nicholas James Schoonover, and Joseph Vrooman. Boys State is a program of The American Legion developed from the concept that youth should be offered a better perspective of the practical operation of government; that the individual is an integral part, and commensurately responsible, for the character and success of his government. As such, it is an activity of high educational value, born of a need for youth training in practical citizenship. Congratulations!

FRESHMAN CLASS NEWS • The Freshman Class donated $270.00 from their class sales, Market Street Coffee and Tea, to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. • Congratulations to the following sellers for the Freshman Market Street Coffee and Tea Sales: 1st place - David Massey, 2nd place - Katie Masler, 3rd place - Katie Rockwell. Great job! • Congratulations to Mr. Jansen's Homeroom for winning the pizza party on March 13th for being the top sellers for the Freshman Market Street Coffee and Tea Sales! • Thank you from Mrs. Cook and Mrs. Hurd to all who chaperoned the Black Light Dance. We had record numbers this year at the dance. Fun was had by all grade levels! Thank you to Bobby K Entertainment and Rita's Ice for making the event a success! • The Freshman and Sophomore class officers donated $492.00 from the Black Light ticket sales to the English/Kieffer family on behalf of the three boys who tragically lost their parents on March 1, 2013.

ATTENTION: SPECIAL EDUCATION AND SECTION 504 STUDENTS 5TH ANNUAL COLLEGE PANEL PROGRAM MAY 23RD - ELMIRA COLLEGE This school-day long program is designed to prepare Special Education and Section 504 Juniors and Seniors for the demands of any college and arm them with strategies to not only survive those demands, but to thrive through: -fun, interactive games -eye-opening conversations -college student lead discussions from 9 recent HHS graduates -successful study skills & test taking strategies -tour of the campus & dorms Students should see Mr. McCarthy in Room 255 for their permission slip. The first 30 students to hand in their completed permission slips will go, so don’t delay. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, along with a backpack full of college supplies. HORSEHEADS HS BAND and VOCAL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE AT STATE SOLO FESTIVAL On April 19th and 20th thirty-seven Horseheads High School band and vocal students participated in forty-two solo performances at the New York State School Music Association Festival held at Bradford Central School. Each student prepared scales, a major solo, and music they had never seen before for a grade and score. Students also receive written evaluations of their performance to work from by certified music adjudicators. Students receiving perfect 100 evaluations on the most difficult level of music as All-State Auditions with an accompanist were: Patrick Leslie - alto saxophone and Tyler Struble - tenor 1 vocal solo. Flautist Nicole Walrath also received a perfect score on her level 5 solo. Outstanding students also using their solo with accompanist as an All-State Audition were Claire Preston – Bassoon, Emily Wagner - clarinet, Jeffrey Hansen - French Horn, Madalyn Owen – Soprano 1 vocal, Jessica Hoffman - , Cameron Stone – Snare and . Additional students receiving outstanding ratings were: Flutes: Erin Kenney and Samantha Verdonck; Oboe: Sruti Akula; Clarinets: Marissa Faroni, Joshuah Tinker, Abigail Swartout and Evan Harshbarger; Alto Saxophones: Rochelle Gordon and Jessica Fletcher; Tenor Saxophone: Caroline Feyling; : Sebastian Bauco, Brendan Marshall, Ryan Hallstrom, Adam Bassler, Julia Millet and Blake Dickson; French Horns: Rebekah Gordon and James Bergman; Trombones: Nick Jividen, Patrick Buckley, and Justin Gregory; Euphonium: Alex Johnson; Tuba: Daniel Anderson; Snare: Timothy Wallisky; Timpanists: Ryan Striker and Timothy Wallisky; Xylophone: Ryan Stryker; : Sebastian Bauco and Tyler Struble; Vocal: Abigail Swartout, Patrick Hoose-Saukas, and Sophia Genier. Participating in this festival offers these students the opportunity to perform in the Senior Area All-State bands and choirs in November. The All-State Audition soloists may be selected for the Conference All-State Band, Choir, and Orchestra festival in December.

The future is around the corner for the young men and women of Horseheads High School. Graduation is the ceremony which culminates our students’ high school years and is the doorway into their future. On June 22, 2013 they will each be part of this memorable event which will carry them into the job market, the service, or off to further education. Many of their friends and family members will be attending this ceremony to share the joy of this accomplishment. Although this is a happy occasion, we would like to encourage certain decorum for this important ceremony to ensure that it is a positive experience for everyone. The following are expectations for the Graduation Ceremony:

♦ Students will dress appropriately under their robes, i.e. slacks (no shorts), shirts, shoes (no bare feet), dresses, skirts, and blouses.

♦ Caps and gowns may be adorned with tasteful decorations.

♦ Use of toys and props, i.e. beach balls, silly string, noise makers, and the like WILL NOT be tolerated – adult behavior is expected of all participants.

REHEARSAL FOR GRADUATION: WILL BE ON FRIDAY, JUNE 21st AT 10:00 A.M. AT THE FIRST ARENA IN ELMIRA. ALL GRADUATES MUST BE PRESENT FOR REHEARSAL. WORK IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE EXCUSE.

STUDENTS NOT PRESENT FOR REHEARSAL WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE GRADUATION CEREMONY.

GRADUATION CEREMONY: GRADUATION FOR THE CLASS OF 2013 WILL BE HELD AT THE FIRST ARENA IN ELMIRA ON SATURDAY, JUNE 22nd, AT 1:00 P.M. GRADUATES WILL MEET AT THE FIRST ARENA AT NOON.

*Guests do not need tickets to attend the ceremony*
