The Barbican’s Framed Film Festival returns for another weekend of screenings and free workshops and events that celebrates the best cinema from around the world for younger film lovers.

Taking place between Sat 17 Nov – Sun 18 Nov, this year’s programme draws together shorts and features, and , old favourites and brand- new characters – all screened together over one weekend to create a showcase of the best stories made for and about children. Young festival-goers can make a day of it by attending a film and some of the free quality artist- and filmmaker-led creative activities that run between 10-4pm in the cinema foyer spaces.

Highlights include Framed Shorts: Animal Antics, a specially curated shorts programme about an array of delightful animals, a sound effects workshop with the School of Noise, the new international hit My Giraffe - about a young boy and his pet giraffe, and the classic Michel Ocelot Princes and Princesses, six captivating stories of love and adventure with an interactive introduction by the artist and Reza Ben Gajra. The free Character Corner design workshop gives young festival goers a creative outlet to design and make their own characters from the .

Sat 17th Nov Framed Shorts: Animal Antics (U*) - 11am This year’s Framed Film Festival opens with a specially curated programme short films – featuring tales of wolves and squirrels, birds and caterpillars, ants and bears, penguins and lions – as well as the odd owl thrown in for good measure!

This charming selection is a fantastic way to introduce a young audience to cinema from around the world in easy to swallow, bite-sized stories – not available anywhere else. Approx running time 65min

My Giraffe (U*) - 1.30pm Patterson is excited to start school for the first time but is disappointed to learn that his best friend Raf - a giraffe in the zoo next-door – won’t be able to come to classes with him. Determined not to grow apart, the two pals navigate this new stage in their lives with courage and mischief. An absolute charmer of a film full of warm-hearted characters, this is a wonderfully gentle story for the youngest of film-goers (and the young at heart!). Based on a poem by Annie M.G. Schmidt, the multi-award winning, queen of Dutch children’s literature. Netherlands 2018 Dir. Barbara Bredero 74min. With English subtitles. Revisit a Classic: Princes of Princesses (PG*) - 3.30pm With introduction from artist and animator Reza Ben Gajra Michel Ocelot – maker of the Kirikou films - Azur and Asmar and - creates beautifully intricate silhouettes to tell short stories of princes and princesses, of daring-do and distant lands. Bringing to mind the work of , this is a rare opportunity to see one of Ocelot’s early works not released theatrically in the UK on the big screen. 2000, Dir Michel Ocelot 70min. With English subtitles. Headsets will be available to children, subtitles will be read out loud by a voice over artist. Artist Reza Ben Gajra will give a lively introduction to the animation techniques that Ocelot uses to create his fantastical onscreen stories. Sun 18th Nov

Cartoon Saloon’s Puffin Rock (U*) with Co-creator and Art Director Lily Bernard - 11.30am Cartoon Saloon has stolen film-goers’ hearts of all ages with their luscious animation style and carefully crafted characters in titles such as Song of the Sea, Secret of Kells and The Breadwinner. In this interactive event the Barbican is delighted to welcome Lily Bernard the Co-creator and Art Director of Cartoon Saloon’s pre-school animation Puffin Rock to talk about her work, screen specially selected episodes of the show and introduce young audiences to the creative processes behind Oona, Baba and the residents of the beautiful island. Approx. 60-70mins With thanks to Cartoon Saloon Moomins and the Winter Wonderland (U*) - 1.20pm With introduction from So Mayer from Club des Femmes. Moomintroll awakes one night and decides not to take his traditional winter slumber, instead he explores the snowy land on a leisurely adventure, encountering many new things and learning much about his beloved valley. Based on the adored Tove Jansson stories, the film has a wonderfully gentle and meditative tone, matched with flawless animation. CHARACTER CORNER Make your own character from the films in the festival from moomins to puffins, owls and giraffes with and artists Shelly Wain and Wendy Scott. Free, Drop in / Cinema 2/3 Foyer

FILM SOUND EFFECTS WORKSHOP With the School of Noise Discover how sound effects are created for film with the School of Noise. Have a go at making your own unique sound track to some classic clips and watch it played back in our mini cinema with foley artists and musicians from School of Noise. ANIMATION STATION Animate your own characters using stop-frame animation. Take inspiration from the world around you and the films you see at the festival with animation specialists. Free, drop-in
