  • Water Hardness
Water hardness Northumbrian Water is responsible for supplying a reliable source of safe, clean, drinking water. The majority of the company supply area is soft to slightly hard. Why some water is hard If your water comes from underground limestone or chalk rocks, or contains a proportion of groundwater, then the chances are that it is hard. The hardness is caused by the presence of minerals dissolved from the ground and rocks by the water. Northumbrian Water is compliant with the appropriate regulations and has no plans to introduce softening to hard water areas. Please find below a PDF document of the water hardness for the Northumbrian Water area, along with the measurement of hardness in degrees Clarke, for use with dishwashers and washing machines. You can check out how hard the water is in your area here by viewing the harness zones. What does this mean for my appliances? If your water is hard you will notice that your kettle and other water heating appliances become furred up with a white scale. You may also find this scale in your bath, sink and shower. It isn't harmful but can be a bit of a nuisance. Hard water can also affect appliances like washing machines, dishwashers and steam irons. If you are installing a new dishwasher, your plumber may ask you for the hardness of your water. If the manufacturer’s instructions show hardness using a different factor, you can convert the values as follows: x 2.5 = calcium carbonate (CaCO3) mg/l x 0.174 = Degrees Clarke Total hardness (as mg/l Ca) x 0.25 = French Degrees x 0.142 = German Degrees We do not change the natural hardness of the region’s water through treatment, it is left to the customer, either domestic or commercial, to decide whether artificial softening is the right choice for them.

  • John Walker's Walk #5 Stockton West
This document was classified as: OFFICIAL John Walker’s Walk #5 Stockton West History walk The start point is the lovely bandstand located at the centre of Ropner Park. Walk towards the lake passing the café on your right, perhaps stopping off for a coffee at the café operated by the Friends of Ropner Park and next to the playground. Walk down the hill and turn right walking around the lake in an anti-clockwise direction. On the way you might want to feed the ducks and stop and read a little bit about Sir Robert Ropner and his contribution to the shipping industry. Top tip, bring duck food – the good stuff mind you as these ducks are fussy! Ropner Park In 1890 Stockton-on-Tees Town Council appointed a committee to consider the purchase of land for a public park. On 11 June 1890 the committee recommended that 36 acres and 26 perches (c 14.6ha) of land known as Hartburn Fields be bought for the sum of £8250, but concerns were raised by the Council regarding the financial burden to the town. In the same month the Council received an offer from Major (later Sir) Robert Ropner of Preston Hall, a highly successful local businessman, to pay the cost of the ground. The offer was accepted and, in recognition of the gift, Ropner was made the first Freeman of the Borough and, although not a Councillor, accepted the office of Mayor in November 1892. In 1890 the Council purchased, for £1026 11s 3d, a further 3 acres, 1 rood and 371/2 perches (c 1.2ha) of adjoining ground to the west which sloped down from the level Hartburn Fields and extended to a stream, Lustrum Beck.

  • Historical Journey Along the River Tees and Its Tributaries
Historical Journey along the River Tees and its Tributaries Synopsis The document describes a virtual journey along the River Tees beginning at its source; the perspective is as much historical as descriptive of the current scene. Where significant tributaries join the river, they also are tracked back to their start-points. Particular attention is paid to bridges and watermills because of their intimate associations with the rivers, but nearby buildings, both religious and secular are also given attention. Some people have been specially important to developments associated with the river, and brief biographical notes are provided for them. Finally, I would stress that this is very much a personal account dealing with facets of interest to me during the 30 years or so that I spent living and working near the River Tees. Document Navigation I do not provide either a contents list, or an index, but to aid navigation through the document I give here page numbers, on which some places appear first in the text. The Bibliography is on Page 52. 1 River Tees and its Tributaries The River Tees flows for 135km, generally west to east from its source on the slopes of Crossfell, the highest Pennine peak, to the North Sea between Redcar and Hartlepool.
