So the summer is well under way, and all of our Sections are making the most of the good weather by getting out and about. Make sure you keep up to date with what’s going on by looking at our Facebook page, Twitter account and Website where we regularly post photos.

The main fundraising event of the summer, our annual fair, has been and gone already and the day was a huge success. We have had lots of very positive feedback from the local community praising us on creating a great community spirit. As we write, the final figures are being collated, but it looks like we will have raised over £5000! This is a fantastic amount, which will go towards providing more great for your children, and we must thank Duncan Stewart for heading up the team who worked hard throughout the year to make it all possible. Thank you as well to everyone who helped on the day, it does show us how much parents appreciate what our Leaders do for your children when you offer some time to help us too.

Don’t forget to get your membership card – for just £1 you will then receive cashback on your shopping and 1st Old Malden Group will receive a percentage as we are one of their Local Causes.

Have a great summer!

Joint Group Scout Leaders Email: [email protected] We are very fortunate that for the last few years Winnipeg Beaver Colony has been run by a great team of leaders, led by Hannah Coote. Hannah has now decided that it is time for her to focus on developing her career and will, therefore, be stepping down as Beaver at the end of this term. We know that Hannah will be a great success in her plans to be a primary school teacher, after a gap year entertaining children on a cruise ship. Sharon Sapey has also decided that it is time to take a break from , and we are very grateful for the fantastic support she has given Hannah as Colony Assistant. We’re sure you will want to join us in thanking both of them for everything they have done to ensure that the Beavers have had a fun and exciting start to their Scouting journey. Plans are underway to ensure that a team is in place in September, which will include Kieran O’Shea and Holly Everest who are in the current team in Winnipeg Colony. We would obviously welcome anyone else who would like to join them, or any of our other Sections, so if you, a family member or friend have ever thought you’d like to give it a try, please contact Louise or Alison to have a chat. No experience is necessary, and you don’t have to have been a member of previously in order to join in the fun.

After a flurry of activity leading up to June 10th finishing with a crescendo on Plough Green on the Saturday, we saw another hugely enjoyable and successful 1OM Scout Group Summer Fair on Plough Green. The weather helped with glorious sunshine and the community turned out in support. Whilst we had a few crisis on the morning (including a last minute dash for BBQ gas) these challenges were overcome in true . We were all treated to Malden Parochial School doing their Maypole Dance in the arena. This is the second year they have done this and it is such fun to watch. Both the Police and the Fire Brigade were in attendance, and not because there was trouble or a fire. The Police were highlighting the neighbourhood watch and also brought three Police dogs whilst the White watch from the New Malden Fire Station brought a big red Fire engine. The Kingston and Malden Scout and Guide band performed live music whilst the PA system provided by Tony Stubbings had a selection of tunes to provide us a background whilst we enjoyed food and drink from the tea tent and the BBQ. We also had the usual attractions including Hook-a-Duck, Tombola, Bouncy Castle, Golf, Scalextric, Thomas the Tank Engine, Soak a Scout, Find the Key and Janet's Jackpot. Books and bric-a-brac were rummaged through for interesting finds or possible treasures. The plant stall was very busy with a great selection of plants. The raffle was well supported with some great prizes. We used the opportunity to get the whole Group together to renew our , and well done to Leon, Alfie and John for reading out the and the Cub and Scout Laws. It was great to be able to do this in the midst of our local community and to declare publicly what Scouting means to us. We rely on the fair to provide valuable funds to help the Group provide activities over the year and this year was another good year. None of this could happen without the organising committee, the leaders, the helpers, the parents and the community. Can I say a big thanks to everyone who organised, helped, sponsored, donated items, plants or prizes or just turned up and supported the fair. We hope you all enjoyed as much as we did and will continue to support our fundraising events over the rest of 2017 and into 2018.

Duncan Stewart

There are lots more photos from the fair coming up. I’ve tried to cram as many as possible into this newsletter. See if you can spot yourself in any of them! Ed.

As a leadership team, we wanted to make sure our Summer Term was full of fun activities and visitors, and as a Colony we have been working towards our “My Adventure Challenge Award”, as well as the “Cyclist & Navigator” Activity Badges. Our visitors this term have included PC Sophia Allinson who came down to talk to the Beavers about her job role, stranger danger and even showed them her equipment. The Beavers were very interested to say the least, and wanted to try everything out! As well as this, we are also awaiting a visit from Richard from the RNLI who is coming to talk about water safety. We have been trying to get out into the sunshine as much as possible! Our trips this term started off with visiting Worcester Park Cricket Club which was very fun. The Beavers loved having a cricket tutorial and being able to run around in the sun. We have also visited Manor Park to build our own track for the Beavers to cycle around. We have been fortunate enough to be able to visit Walton Firs campsite so we could take part in their Maze and Adventure Course which was an excuse to get very mucky! We are also hoping to have a water fight the last week of term which should top off a fantastic Summer Term! Thank you to my fantastic team as always for being amazing, organised and keeping the Colony running so smoothly. Welcome to Joshua, George, Albie, William, Connor & Thomas who have joined Winnipeg recently, we hope you enjoy your time at Beavers. Good luck to Gabriella and Sam who will continue their scouting journeys too! Due to future commitments and travelling from September, I will very sadly be stepping down from Winnipeg as Beaver Scout Leader after nearly 5 years of running the colony. Sharon, my Colony Assistant will also be stepping down and having a well earned break. I could not have run the Colony so well without her help and support... so a massive thank you to her. Speaking on behalf of both of us, we have had such a great time being part of Winnipeg and we have been very lucky getting to know so many of our Beavers who have started their scouting journeys with us and continued to grow and develop, as they progress through to Cubs and Scouts. I am very pleased that Holly Everest and Kieran O'Shea will be continuing to lead the Colony... which is fantastic news. Lastly, I would like to say a big thank you to all of the parents who have been so supportive and helpful which is one the reasons why the Colony has been such a joy to run over the past few years. Also to the other Leaders within 1st Old Malden who have been great to work alongside and have made being part of scouting such a special part of my life. Thank you everybody! It's not goodbye, just see you soon!!

Best Wishes,

Hannah Coote, Beaver Scout Leader Winnipeg Colony Yukon Beavers have enjoyed a variety of different activities over the past few months. While the weather was still a bit chillier we stayed in the headquarters for evenings focused on junk modelling (Go Karts for teddies!), Making Welsh cakes for St David’s Day, and Didgeridoos for Anzac day. We have also had some interesting visiting speakers, varying from Anne Beales, teaching us about Fairtrade, Richard Bywaters from the RNLI, who taught us about water safety to link in with our Safety badge, Ben with his police dog, Hardy and Spaceman Fin! At the end of the Spring term we had a trip to Pets at Home to learn about looking after our pets, and the Beavers made friends with lizards and snakes, although some of us preferred the small furry animals. We have also been out on a walk along the Hogsmill and stopped in a field to identify the range of trees there. As usual, we did our bit to help make our Group fair a success. This year it involved planting up 120 bedding plants which Homebase, New Malden had kindly donated. We also made advertising labels, some of which tugged at the heartstrings, to attract buyers. We are now looking forward to celebrating American Independence Day, doing the Cyclist badge in Manor Park and practicing for District Sports Day, where we hope to retain our Tunnel Ball champions title! It has been great to invest new Beavers in to the Colony, and hope that Jake, Anfisa, Fletcher and Aanya are enjoying the beginning of their Scouting journey.

Cornwell Pack have had a busy 2017 so far! Activities based on the Digital Maker, Disability Awareness and the Road Safety Activity Badges have kept us occupied! In addition to this, the Cubs have had a keep fit night, a pancake making & flipping evening and had a go at fire-lighting at Southwood Activity Centre. As part of the Digital Maker badge the Cubs visited the Apple Store in Kingston for a fun evening learning programming skills. The staff were great and really welcoming. Other activities covered for the badge were learning the parts of a computer and designing a webpage. The Disability Awareness badge saw the Cubs learn fingerspelling (with the help of Louise from Yukon Colony) and understanding different types of disabilities. We also had a special visitor in the form of Philip Indge and his Guide Dog Lester. Philip talked to the Cubs about the important work of Guide Dogs and how Lester helps him in his everyday life. During the term the Cubs had the chance to learn about Scouting in another country when Ana, from Royal Kingston , told us all about Scouting in her native Portugal. Other evenings covered some keep fit exercises, celebrating Shrove Tuesday and a games night in Manor Park. The Cubs enjoyed our now annual visit to White Spider Climbing Centre in March and I was pleased to invest Sam and Edward whilst we were there! Another fun evening was had at Southwood Activity Centre where the Cubs learnt how to build a small fire and then got to cook some marshmallows on them! Well done to our team of 7 Cubs who represented the Pack and the Group at the District 5-a-side football tournament. Although we just missed out on the semi-finals the team gave their best and worked really hard for each other. The team members were: Damien Raj, Nathaniel Spink, Otto Linstead, Henry Tagg, Max Banks, Thomas Mitchell & James Wright. Thanks also to Steve Wright for acting as team coach. The Cubs have started to work towards the Naturalist Badge, which involves visiting a local nature spot over a period of a few months. The Cubs are monitoring the Plough Pond for seasonal changes and will return for another visit after the Summer holidays. Other activities include identifying common trees and wild flowers and making a bird feeder. Before and after the Whitsun half term break, the Pack were pleased to be able to boost the Group’s Summer Fair profits by going out selling raffle tickets over two evenings and they were great ambassadors for the Group whilst they did it! Thank you to the parents who gave up their time to help supervise the Cubs on these evenings. Well done to Max Banks who created the winning design for the Fair Poster & Programme. Another activity badge which the Cubs have completed recently is the Road Safety badge. Obviously a very important skill for all young people to have and covered not only the Green Cross Code but road signs, pedestrian crossings and how to behave as a passenger in a car. Since the last Red & Yellow we have welcomed 6 new faces into the Pack: Sam Sangsari, Edward Tagg, Nathan Amankwah, Aaron Burt Duran, Liam Pizmoht and Oscar Symes. Yellow Six, led by Beau, came out on top in the Spring term Inter-Six challenge and received some Easter eggs as their reward! Durng the term I have been very proud to be able to present the top award in Cub Scouting: The Chief Scout’s Silver Award to Oliver Ironside, Jakub Herpak and Thomas Ghafur before they moved on to life in the Troop. We also said goodbye to Sam, Harry and Ben Dowd, who were only with us six months, as they too moved on to the Troop. We are sorry to see them all go but wish them well in the future and say thank you for being a part of Cornwell Pack. The Pack are currently working on their Cyclist Activity badge and preparing for our Camp at the beginning of September where we will be working on the Outdoor Challenge Badge. Finally, thank you to all the leadership team at Cornwell; Sean, Kristie, Rosie & Alex for helping me to provide great Cub Scouting for all our young people every week.

Alison Eggitt, Akela Email: [email protected] or [email protected]

We started off this year with a visit to the Apple store in Kingston, this allowed the Cubs to complete their Digital Maker Stage 2 badge by learning how to program robots.

We had an evening celebrating the Chinese New Year, the year of the Rooster by making lanterns and learning to use chopsticks and playing Chinese games. We finished our entertainers badge with an evening of sock puppets.

We had a special guest of Philip and his guide dog Leicester visit the pack as part of the disability awareness badge, the pack helped raise over £130 for Guide Dogs for the Blind, many thanks! We also managed to enter a team into the annual Scooter Rally, well done to those who took part.

Spring term was finished by a visit to Southwood to learn fire making skills and a visit to White Spider climbing – both a firm favourite among Cubs! As we start to get out and about a bit more we started the Summer off with the Road Safety Badge, and had an evening learning how to cross the road safety, following on with this theme we have also worked towards our Naturalist badge and learned about the Country code and respecting our environment. We entered a team into the district 5-a-side football, we managed to get to 6th place – very well done to the player that took part. As we get ready for our joint Cub Camp in September we are now working towards the Outdoor Challenge badge, we spent a very warm evening in the park making catapults to fire water bombs. In the next few weeks we will be learning to pitch a tent and about camp safety. We also have the district Sports day coming up and will be joining forces with Cornwell pack. As ever I must say big thank you to the Kipling leadership team of Nic Youster, Jackie Moore and our young leader Charlie Howes for all the hard work they put in each week. We now sadly must say goodbye and a massive thank you to Amber who has volunteered as part her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award.

Kevin Cornford, Akela The 2017 Summer programme for the scout troop translates into keeping everyone outdoors as much as possible. We spend most of our evenings honing our scoung skills, having fun and running about. You may have seen us if you were driving past on a Thursday evening. Our annual Scout Fair in June dominates our Summer programme, and sees the troop running around town, busily selling Raffle Tickets. Once again I'm reminded of the fond memories and high regard that scouts hold, as we knock on the doors of Old Malden. Scoung Summers wouldn't be complete without geng wet. The troop factor this into their programme by spending an evening at Southwood acvity centre for a water fight. Water pistols, hoses, buckets and super‐soakers ensure no‐one goes home with dry kit. Finally, thank you to Tom, Eloise, Ewan & Mahew for their assistance and contribuon to the fun, adventure and scoung for our troop.

Callum Grant, Troop Leader Titan have been busy preparing for two different D of E expeditions (one Bronze and one Gold) by regularly practising their canoeing at Kingston Scouts Canoe Club. They’ve also been to Oxshott Woods, Laser Quest, and as in the pictures below, cycling on “Boris Bikes” in 's parks. Titan sold lots of raffles tickets for the 1OM fair, and ran the very popular BBQ. In the next R&Y there will be lots of news and pictures from the D of E expeditions. Ed.

James Farquharson of Titan ESU who shoots with the RKSARC (Royal Kingston Scout Air Rifle Club) and National Scout Squad, won 1st Place in the ESSU (English Smallbore Shooting Union) Championships for 10m Mixed Sporter. He also came in second place in the 50m Rifle Prone Junior Mens Competition (under 21). In the Scout National Archery Championships (Jamie shoots with the Royal Kingston Archery Club) Jamie won Gold for 20 Yard Recurve. Bottom right accepting his Archery cup in his Lincoln green “Robin Hood” tights! TITAN YOUNG LEADER SUCCESS!

’So what are the best bits about being the District Commissioner and what are the worst bits?” was one of the questions put to our DC when he spent some time recently with our Young Leaders. Neil Findlay joined us at a recent Titan Explorer meeting to chat with 4 of our Young Leaders who have just completed their Young Leader Award. Neil asked them about the training they had undertaken for the Award, what they had got from it, what they enjoyed about being with the younger sections, would they recommend this to other Explorers (I’m happy to report that the answer to that question was Yes!) and many other questions. We talked about what the benefits of being a Young Leader or Adult Leader in Scouting meant and all 4 of the boys said they wanted to carry on in Scouting through Network or as an Adult Leader. Neil then invited them to ask him questions, so they did! As you can see from the photos the boys were all presented with their new Buckles and Certificates. If you see them helping around the Group, why don’t you ask them about their training and achievement too? Congratulations to Charlie Howes, Ewan Grant, Fintan Creedon and Robin Barrington! Great job!
