Alison Louise Eggi Dibble So the summer is well under way, and all of our Sections are making the most of the good weather by getting out and about. Make sure you keep up to date with what’s going on by looking at our Facebook page, Twitter account and Website where we regularly post photos. The main fundraising event of the summer, our annual fair, has been and gone already and the day was a huge success. We have had lots of very positive feedback from the local community praising us on creating a great community spirit. As we write, the final figures are being collated, but it looks like we will have raised over £5000! This is a fantastic amount, which will go towards providing more great Scouting for your children, and we must thank Duncan Stewart for heading up the team who worked hard throughout the year to make it all possible. Thank you as well to everyone who helped on the day, it does show us how much parents appreciate what our Leaders do for your children when you offer some time to help us too. Don’t forget to get your membership card – for just £1 you will then receive cashback on your shopping and 1st Old Malden Scout Group will receive a percentage as we are one of their Local Causes. Have a great summer! Alison Eggi and Louise Dibble Joint Group Scout Leaders Email: [email protected] We are very fortunate that for the last few years Winnipeg Beaver Colony has been run by a great team of leaders, led by Hannah Coote. Hannah has now decided that it is time for her to focus on developing her career and will, therefore, be stepping down as Beaver Scout Leader at the end of this term. We know that Hannah will be a great success in her plans to be a primary school teacher, after a gap year entertaining children on a cruise ship. Sharon Sapey has also decided that it is time to take a break from Beavers, and we are very grateful for the fantastic support she has given Hannah as Colony Assistant. We’re sure you will want to join us in thanking both of them for everything they have done to ensure that the Beavers have had a fun and exciting start to their Scouting journey. Plans are underway to ensure that a team is in place in September, which will include Kieran O’Shea and Holly Everest who are in the current team in Winnipeg Colony. We would obviously welcome anyone else who would like to join them, or any of our other Sections, so if you, a family member or friend have ever thought you’d like to give it a try, please contact Louise or Alison to have a chat. No experience is necessary, and you don’t have to have been a member of the Scout Association previously in order to join in the fun. After a flurry of activity leading up to June 10th finishing with a crescendo on Plough Green on the Saturday, we saw another hugely enjoyable and successful 1OM Scout Group Summer Fair on Plough Green. The weather helped with glorious sunshine and the community turned out in support. Whilst we had a few crisis on the morning (including a last minute dash for BBQ gas) these challenges were overcome in true Scout spirit. We were all treated to Malden Parochial School doing their Maypole Dance in the arena. This is the second year they have done this and it is such fun to watch. Both the Police and the Fire Brigade were in attendance, and not because there was trouble or a fire. The Police were highlighting the neighbourhood watch and also brought three Police dogs whilst the White watch from the New Malden Fire Station brought a big red Fire engine. The Kingston and Malden Scout and Guide band performed live music whilst the PA system provided by Tony Stubbings had a selection of tunes to provide us a background whilst we enjoyed food and drink from the tea tent and the BBQ. We also had the usual attractions including Hook-a-Duck, Tombola, Bouncy Castle, Golf, Scalextric, Thomas the Tank Engine, Soak a Scout, Find the Key and Janet's Jackpot. Books and bric-a-brac were rummaged through for interesting finds or possible treasures. The plant stall was very busy with a great selection of plants. The raffle was well supported with some great prizes. We used the opportunity to get the whole Group together to renew our Scout Promise, and well done to Leon, Alfie and John for reading out the Scout Motto and the Cub and Scout Laws. It was great to be able to do this in the midst of our local community and to declare publicly what Scouting means to us. We rely on the fair to provide valuable funds to help the Group provide activities over the year and this year was another good year. None of this could happen without the organising committee, the leaders, the helpers, the parents and the community. Can I say a big thanks to everyone who organised, helped, sponsored, donated items, plants or prizes or just turned up and supported the fair. We hope you all enjoyed as much as we did and will continue to support our fundraising events over the rest of 2017 and into 2018. Duncan Stewart There are lots more photos from the fair coming up. I’ve tried to cram as many as possible into this newsletter. See if you can spot yourself in any of them! Ed. Text As a leadership team, we wanted to make sure our Summer Term was full of fun activities and visitors, and as a Colony we have been working towards our “My Adventure Challenge Award”, as well as the “Cyclist & Navigator” Activity Badges. Our visitors this term have included PC Sophia Allinson who came down to talk to the Beavers about her job role, stranger danger and even showed them her equipment. The Beavers were very interested to say the least, and wanted to try everything out! As well as this, we are also awaiting a visit from Richard from the RNLI who is coming to talk about water safety. We have been trying to get out into the sunshine as much as possible! Our trips this term started off with visiting Worcester Park Cricket Club which was very fun. The Beavers loved having a cricket tutorial and being able to run around in the sun. We have also visited Manor Park to build our own track for the Beavers to cycle around. We have been fortunate enough to be able to visit Walton Firs campsite so we could take part in their Maze and Adventure Course which was an excuse to get very mucky! We are also hoping to have a water fight the last week of term which should top off a fantastic Summer Term! Thank you to my fantastic team as always for being amazing, organised and keeping the Colony running so smoothly. Welcome to Joshua, George, Albie, William, Connor & Thomas who have joined Winnipeg recently, we hope you enjoy your time at Beavers. Good luck to Gabriella and Sam who will continue their scouting journeys too! Due to future commitments and travelling from September, I will very sadly be stepping down from Winnipeg as Beaver Scout Leader after nearly 5 years of running the colony. Sharon, my Colony Assistant will also be stepping down and having a well earned break. I could not have run the Colony so well without her help and support... so a massive thank you to her. Speaking on behalf of both of us, we have had such a great time being part of Winnipeg and we have been very lucky getting to know so many of our Beavers who have started their scouting journeys with us and continued to grow and develop, as they progress through to Cubs and Scouts. I am very pleased that Holly Everest and Kieran O'Shea will be continuing to lead the Colony... which is fantastic news. Lastly, I would like to say a big thank you to all of the parents who have been so supportive and helpful which is one the reasons why the Colony has been such a joy to run over the past few years. Also to the other Leaders within 1st Old Malden who have been great to work alongside and have made being part of scouting such a special part of my life. Thank you everybody! It's not goodbye, just see you soon!! Best Wishes, Hannah Coote, Beaver Scout Leader Winnipeg Colony Yukon Beavers have enjoyed a variety of different activities over the past few months. While the weather was still a bit chillier we stayed in the headquarters for evenings focused on junk modelling (Go Karts for teddies!), Making Welsh cakes for St David’s Day, and Didgeridoos for Anzac day. We have also had some interesting visiting speakers, varying from Anne Beales, teaching us about Fairtrade, Richard Bywaters from the RNLI, who taught us about water safety to link in with our Safety badge, Ben with his police dog, Hardy and Spaceman Fin! At the end of the Spring term we had a trip to Pets at Home to learn about looking after our pets, and the Beavers made friends with lizards and snakes, although some of us preferred the small furry animals. We have also been out on a walk along the Hogsmill and stopped in a field to identify the range of trees there.
