INSPIRE Internship Camp Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur Sponsored by Department of Science & Technology “Golden Jubilee Year ”

INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) is an extremely use ful and unique mi ssion of Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, Govt of India. The aim of this program is to attract talent to the excitement and study of basic science s at an early stage and to help nation build required critical resource pool for strengthing basic and natural sciences. INSPIRE Scheme has included following three components.

(i) Scheme for Early Attraction of Talents for Science (SEATS) (ii) Scholarships for Higher Education (SHE) (iii) Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC)

A stri king feature of the programme is that it does not believe in conducting competitive examinations for identification of talent in any level. It believes in and relies on the efficacy of the existing edu cational structure for identification of talent.

Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University has been organizing Summer and Winter camps on regular basis for toppers (top 1%) of Chhattisgarh St ate and CBSE from Board examinations in C lass – X. The university had so far organized nine internship camps in which about 1625 school students from all parts of Chhattisgarh participated (Table I) .

All the camps were designed in such a way to make the participants feel the joy of studying basic sciences and pave the way for strengthening the resource base of Science and Technology. It included lectures of renowned scientsts, Shanti Sarup Bhatnagar awardees, fellows of National academices (Pl. see the Table II). The scientific success stories , the joys of innovation across all science streams and career opportunities have been covered in these lectures. The scientic shows, visit of different sophisticated laboratories for experimental sessions, visit of regional Science centre and Scientific model competitions ate also part of the programme. (Pl. see the Photographs). The State Council for Education Research and Training (SCERT), District Education Department and Department of School Education, Govt. of Chhattisgarh provided assistance for student selections. All areas of sciences like Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Earth Science and Mathematics have been covered with special emphasis on interdisciplinary aspects.

Such an exposure would definitely attract a good number of young budding students to pursue their higher studies and research in different fields of Science. It is a program with long term foresight. Table II Name of the Mentor’s
