    1: For me, it was personal names with too many of the letter "q", "z", or "x". With apostrophes. Big indicator of "call a rabbit a smeerp"; and generally, a given name turns up on page 1... 2: Large scale conspiracies over large time scales that remain secret and don't fall apart. (This is not *explicitly* limited to SF, but appears more often in branded-cyberpunk than one would hope for a subgenre borne out of Bruce Sterling being politically realistic in a zine.) Pretty much *any* form of large-scale space travel. Low earth orbit, not so much; but, human beings in tin cans going to other planets within the solar system is an expensive multi-year endevour that is unlikely to be done on a more regular basis than people went back and forth between Europe and the americas prior to steam ships. Forget about interstellar travel. Any variation on the old chestnut of "robots/ais can't be emotional/creative". On the one hand, this is realistic because human beings have a tendency for othering other races with beliefs and assumptions that don't hold up to any kind of scrutiny (see, for instance, the relatively common belief in pre-1850 US that black people literally couldn't feel pain). On the other hand, we're nowhere near AGI right now and it's already obvious to everyone with even limited experience that AI can be creative (nothing is more creative than a PRNG) and emotional (since emotions are the least complex and most mechanical part of human experience and thus are easy to simulate).

When I want to ‹nd out if someone else’s idea of sf corresponds signi‹cantly with mine (and whether, therefore, we’re liable to enjoy talking about the stuff), I have a simple rule-of-thumb: to wit—do they know—and admire—the work of Philip K. Dick? An active dislike, as against mere ignorance, would suggest either of two possibilities to me. If it is expressed by an otherwise voracious con- sumer of the genre, one who doesn’t balk at the prose of Zelazny, van Vogt, or Robert Moore Williams, I am inclined to think him essentially un-serious, a “fan” who is into sf entirely for escapist reasons. If, on the other hand, he is provably a person of enlightenment and good taste and he nevertheless doesn’t like Dick, then I know that my kind of sf (the kind I like) will always remain inaccessible. For those readers who require sf always to aspire to the condition of art Philip Dick is just too nakedly a hack, capable of whole chapters of turgid prose and of bloopers so grandiose you may wonder, momentarily, whether they’re not just his lit- tle way of winking at his fellow-laborers in the pulps. Even his most well- realized characters have their moments of wood, while in his bad novels (which are few), there are no characters, only names capable of dialogue.

(C) 1977. 191pp. A$7.95. On sale now. PASSING FOR HUMAN is the first book from The Women's Press that I've read that has been published by them. The novel is from the viewpoint of a non-human female who is visiting earth to ascertain if the humans on the planet should be destroyed. It seems that the aliens are building a sort of hyperspace tube from one end of the galaxy to the other and earth is at one nexus. Benaroya's original body is a dolphin-like creature. She has the ability to change bodies and has a stock of human look-alike in her wardrobe. The body types have been taken from film and tv shows over the years. She has one in the likeness of Emma Peel, Virginia Woolf and Brenda Starr. When she first arrives in the USA she has the Starr body and manages to create havoc by wending a trail of destruction and leaving dead bodies (other humans') in her wake. The plot is something that does not stand up to close scrutiny; however Jodie Scott is a quite good writer and glosses over the inconsistencies well. PASSING FOR HUMAN is good humorous sf. The Message shows its bare bones in a couple of (short) paragraphs, otherwise it is very enjoyable. THE BOOK OF THE NIGHT by Rhoda Herman.

    Jesse Jones Campbell, Frye, and Girard: Myths, Heroes & Ritual Violence in Literature Jesse Jones Submitted to the Department of English, Vanderbilt University, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Honors in the Major, April 18, 2012 1 Jesse Jones Introduction Some literary critics, in attempting to devise all-encompassing theories of literature, have incorporated the idea of the separation of the literary from the temporal. If the analysis of literature is allowed to become bound up in politics, the critics hold, then it becomes subject to the whims of other literary critics, resulting in the breakdown of its claim to universality. In my thesis, I analyze the literary theories of Joseph Campbell, Northrop Frye, and Rene Girard for their ability to address political concerns in literature. In the movement from Campbell -- who treated politics with an active disregard -- to Girard -- who has given interviews directly linking his theory of literature with political events such as 9/11 -- I hope to reveal that a theory like Girard's successfully incorporating political concerns is not an invitation to subjectivity, but instead a crucial method of ensuring the theory's adaptability to the ever-changing world in which we live. Another strength of Girard's theory is that it does not aim to account for all types of literature, but limits itself to accounting for the origins of ritual violence, a description lacking in both Campbell and Frye. While Campbell's and Frye's theories hold up fairly well in application to the examples which Campbell and Frye choose, I hope to show that these examples are limited to a certain types of narrative: Campbell to ancient myths and by Frye to canonical Western poets (Milton, Shakespeare, Blake).

Psychologists have you in their sights February 18, 2020 10.26am GMT Science fiction has struggled to achieve the same credibility as highbrow literature. In Author 2019, the celebrated author Ian McEwan dismissed science fiction as the stuff of “anti- gravity boots” rather than “human dilemmas”. According to McEwan, his own book about intelligent robots, Machines Like Me, provided the latter by examining the ethics of artificial life – as if this were not a staple of science fiction from Isaac Asimov’s robot Gavin Miller stories of the 1940s and 1950s to TV series such as Humans (2015-2018). Senior Lecturer in Medical Humanities, University of Glasgow Psychology has often supported this dismissal of the genre. The most recent psychological accusation against science fiction is the “great fantasy migration hypothesis”. This supposes that the real world of unemployment and debt is too disappointing for a generation of entitled narcissists. They consequently migrate to a land of make-believe where they can live out their grandiose fantasies. The authors of a 2015 study stress that, while they have found evidence to confirm this hypothesis, such psychological profiling of “geeks” is not intended to be stigmatising. Fantasy migration is “adaptive” – dressing up as Princess Leia or Darth Vader makes science fiction fans happy and keeps them out of trouble. But, while psychology may not exactly diagnose fans as mentally ill, the insinuation remains – science fiction evades, rather than confronts, disappointment with the real world.

Nursing his dreams, Hitler eventually produced a science fiction masterpiece called "The Lord of the Swastika." The Iron Dream is itself divided into three parts. In the first, we are treated to a biographical sketch of Hitler’s life, including his stint as an editor of a fanzine before writing his masterpiece. The third is an extended scholarly treatment of Hitler’s epic which considers the meaning of the book and Hitler’s psychology in writing The Iron Dream.The greater part of the book is Hitler’s masterpiece. It involves Feric Jagger, a man who marches out of a wilderness genetically blighted by a nuclear war to the pure human state of Heldon.
