Welcome to our 2018/2019 catalog. We have been very hard at work, and have had great seasons these last 2 years. We hope that you have too. Besides growing and shipping a lot of nice plants, we have also been busy in the nursery development department. The big news is that we bought the neighboring farm. So now we have plenty of room to keep growing, in all senses of the word. Penny, the previous owner, had worked in our propagation department. 3 of her kids had worked for us for years as well. A great family. When Penny sadly passed away last year, the now grown kids approached us to see if we were interested in buying it. So it was all worked out amicably, and now its part of VBN. As with all of our expansions, we have 3 goals in mind, in this order… 1- Improve quality. New growing areas allow us to do this by Penny spacing more plants out, and spacing them earlier. This is one of the absolute keys to growing quality plants. 2- Improved efficiency. With more growing areas, we can space plants at the time of planting, instead of going back out and spacing them later, which is much more labor intensive. And we don’t have to move plants around as much to create new space. 3- Increase numbers. As our market and the demand increases, we are growing too. We continue our interest in native plants. We are growing more open pollinated natives for the sun, along with the selected ‘nativars’ which have been popular for years. We are increasing our offerings of woodland plants as well. Many of these plants fit in well with the need for and interest in good pollinator plants. Custom growing continues to be a big part of what we do. Each year we get plant lists from landscapers and designers and grow the plants for them. This is a fascinating process for us; it gives us the opportunity to grow plants we’ve never grown before. We have to get them all ready for a particular planting date, another challenge. We hope to continue to develop this part of our business. Our biggest asset is our team. We have been developing an amazing team. Many hard working and intelligent folks, from all over the globe, pitch in to make this place hum. We are proud of our staff! Nomenclature: Maine Nursery and Landscape Association To help standardize the naming of perennials, we Perennial Plant Association have followed the nomenclature in "Naamlijst Van Vermont Nursery & Landscape Association Vaste Planten" from the Netherlands. This is the Associated Landscape Contractors of Massachusetts accepted list for the Perennial Plant Association International Plant Propagators Society and is widely accepted in Europe. We do, however, Royal Horticultural Society list the English name first in our catalog, followed New England Wildflower Society, Inc. by the correct name from the plant's language of Internationale Stauden-Union origin.
