Governor Keith Vickerman retires after over 45 years of service

Immanuel College and the governors say thank you to Keith Vickerman, who has retired after a lifetime of public service to schools in Bradford, Shipley and London. More than 50 years ago, he was part of the Shipley Education Executive under the West Riding Education Committee.

The first decision he was involved with related to whether schools went to comprehensive status or not, and he was also Keith is very modest and underplays the significant contribution he has heavily involved in the planning of this. made to school governance. He has been an active governor for over 46 years with 28 of those in Bradford schools. He joined Immanuel in 2001 In seeking a comprehensive education for the area, Keith wanted and has been constant in his support of the school. He has had a clear and to assure that the good quality of teaching seen in grammar passionate commitment to wanting the very best education and schools was replicated in a comprehensive setting. Denise Sterling, Chair of Governors

We are very grateful for Keith’s dedication and hard work in the service of Immanuel College as a Governor. He has always been very committed and supportive of the school and its students.

Jane Tiller, Headteacher

Immanuel College has fulfilled all my ideas of how a comprehensive school should be organised. Our Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team are always looking for improvements and if something doesn’t work they look for other improvements. They are constantly looking to improve attendance and do this very successfully. Immanuel College looks after all the students and from my observation, our Headteacher feels very strongly about this. She constantly congratulates all students on their achievements and this school for me has demonstrated that it is a fully inclusive school. It is with great sadness that I will now be retiring as a governor, however I look forward to keeping in touch with the team at Immanuel and watching the school grow with the upcoming expansion.

February half term once again saw 17 students and 2 sta members embark on the annual ski trip. This time we visited Vallnord in Andorra. It was the first time Immanuel College had visited Andorra and both students and sta had an amazing time! We had a fantastic week with lots of fresh snow and glorious blue skies. Both students and sta went from being complete novices to experts on the slopes within the space of a week. There was lots of laughter and moments of madness when students fell over and bounced straight back up with huge smiles on their faces.

Andorra was a fantastic place to ski, the ski area was so big we didn't cover it all and we are hoping to return next year in search of new areas to visit. Students skied through the day and later enjoyed activities such as; a pizza evening, swimming and the use of the jacuzzi which went down a treat on those tired legs!

We also enjoyed sledging, which turned into a huge snowball fight and a sta and student 'pile on'.

It was an absolute privilege for sta to spend a week with the students. As usual, their behaviour and attitude were impeccable; they were a pleasure to take and did Immanuel College proud! Towards the end of the week, we were delighted to hear comments from students such as; ‘this has been one of the best weeks of my life’ and after a couple of days, ‘we will definitely be back next year; skiing is amazing!’ The Message 6 Between Thursday 15th and Sunday 18th March, 34 Year 11 students visited Berlin to support their GCSE study of Germany in the 20th century. Students visited a variety of historic sites, including Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, the Reichstag building, the Berlin Wall and the Brandenburg Gate. The trip tracked Germany’s rise as a world power, its swing towards dictatorship under Hitler and its emergence from WW2 as one of the leading countries in Europe.

The year 11 GCSE drama students went to the Alhambra Theatre on Wednesday 7th March to watch War Horse as part of their GCSE examination. The students behaveD impeccably and thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

The day started o with our students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their dierent roles, responsibilities and the enterprise skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction. “We’ve done really well as a team; working together, listening to each other and staying positive when

things went wrong.” Year 8 Student

On Thursday 1st February Post 16 students were invited to attend a presentation by the West Yorkshire Fire brigade. It was a really enlightening experience as the students got to hear first-hand from three fire fighters about the recruitment process to becoming a qualified fire fighter. The students were also introduced to other apprenticeship career options offered by the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, which included IT and Media.

The Message 8 Team Challenge This half term 12 Year 8 students were selected to participate in the BDAT team maths challenge. This involved a series of puzzles and challenges which really put their problem solving and resilience to the test! Students worked in mixed teams across the BDAT schools to win the team challenge medals. All team members acted as fantastic representatives for Immanuel College, quickly forming team relationships and communicating mathematical ideas with confidence. A huge well done to all those who took part.

On Wednesday 21st February Year 7 experienced an innovative and exciting performance called "Deadly Distraction" from a theatre company called the Riot Act. WELL DONE TO ALL THE STUDENTS THAT TOOK PART! 9 The Message News from Joanne Welding, Choices, Choices… Go Higher progression officer, Go Higher, West Yorkshire Year 10 students at Immanuel College have been thinking about their options and choices post 18 in Go Higher activity sessions during their lunch times. In one activity the students sorted cards on possible options, for example choosing a university course, getting a job, taking a gap year, visiting university open days, etc and thought about when they had to make these choices. The students quickly realised that up to the age of 16 most of the decisions in their lives, such as which school to attend, were out of their hands. Post 16 and post 18 the choices are suddenly wide open! Some feedback from the students included: Year 11 and 12 visit “My choices really start up at 16.” “You have the choice to continue to study after 18.” to the University of York “There is a lot of flexibility of choice.” To give Immanuel students a feel for the range of Russell Group “Better jobs and careers give you more options.” universities in Yorkshire, we went on a visit with 26 Year 11 and 12 “You can choose the order you do things students to York University. A Russell Group university is one based like buying a house or studying at university.” around research and the university students are taught by lecturers engaged in cutting edge developments. York is rated in the top 20 universities in the country.

The university was founded in 1963 so many of the buildings are in a style called “brutalist” architecture and the campus surrounds a huge man-made lake with a fountain in the middle with ducks! The students took part in a campus tour around the modern colleges of York and saw the university in action.

The students asked questions of the student ambassadors in one session and were introduced to ideas about how to choose a university by Richard, the York outreach officer. He encouraged the students to think about decisions such as campus vs city centre universities and how to research the modules different universities offer with the same course title, for example history. Year 12 PwC Visit The World of Business

On Wednesday 7th February a group of Year 12 students from Immanuel College took part in a visit to new PWC offices in Leeds. The visit was to give the students an opportunity to see how the world of business works and to talk to recent recruits to PwC, including graduates and school leavers at 18.

The new offices were fantastic with amazing facilities. When we arrived our students were entertained in the client suite, which was like the first class lounge in an airport – drinks and snacks to help yourself to (which we did!) and lovely seating areas. We had a tour of the offices with break out spaces and open plan areas as On Wednesday 31st January, 42 year 10 students spent the day at the University of well as the opportunity to find out more about the recruitment process at PwC. The Message 12 On Friday 23rd February Year 11 students collected their mock GCSE examination results. Year 11 students walked into the hall and collected an envelope with their name on with the results inside. Students opened their envelopes immediately, some moved away from everyone to open their envelopes more privately and some didn’t dare to look!

There was laughter, relief and some regret. One student was heard saying, “I am so disappointed.” The good news is that these were only mock results and there is still plenty of time to change poor results into fantastic results with hard work. Year 11 students have been working on producing a revision plan, with many subjects are already devoting lesson time to revision and extra lessons are being run to support students.

Revision guides, English Literature texts and past exam papers are being given to students and of course learn sheets are on the website. We wish year 11 all the very best of luck with their revision! CHARITY NEWS
