10. 2019 Thorn-Clarke, Shotfire, Shiraz 12/750ml Source: Australia – South Australia – Barossa Valley 100% Shiraz aged 14 months in 40% new American hogsheads with the balance going into 2nd and 3rd fill barrels. This is the top Aussie wine from KPF since 2002. Fran shares his story on how he discovered Thorn-Clarke and Shotfire Shiraz: "It was October 2001, and I was searching for and sourcing for Australian wines, as it was clear that Australia was going to become the "next big thing." After tasting about 100 assorted wines, I decided I liked the style of Barossa, Shiraz best - chocolate, cherries, mint, and eucalyptus - so I started focusing on Barossa growers (years later, Barossa Shiraz would develop its reputation as the Icon Shiraz for Australia). Late on a Thursday afternoon, the carrier delivered a beat-up box of 12 bottles from Australia, 10 of which were leaking. The box was from a guy named Steve Machin, who had just left Hardy's and was beginning work with the Clarke family on setting up a possible new brand. The samples were sticky and messy, but I popped the corks anyway ....and I was glad that I did. The wine inside tasted like Christmas - mint, eucalyptus, camphor, and evergreen aromas. Great acidity, color, flavor, and length of finish - very tasty. These samples were so good and so exciting, especially compared to what I had tasted prior, that I immediately called the number on the card. I didn't realize that it was a Perth number (Western Australia), and it was actually 3:00 in the morning. It turned out I was calling the residence of David and Cheryl Clarke, where a sleepy Cheryl answered the phone. I told her, you don't know who I am, but we are going to be doing business together very soon, and lots of it! After a few months of talking, faxing (yes, faxing) and sorting out the details, I began importing their wines. That super-star wine from the busted box of samples is the wine we know today as Shotfire Shiraz. It was originally called Stone Jar, but fortunately we came up with a better name. Many years and later, I'm still glad to be importing Shotfire Shiraz and other Thorn-Clarke selections .... and I'm still glad that Cheryl Clarke woke up for that phone call." Striking deep red purple in color. A rich, voluptuous wine with aromas of blackcurrant and mulberries accompanied by notes of smokey oak and hints of cloves. Thanks to the dynamic efforts of ambitious winegrowers, this traditional rarity has grown in stature and recognition to become the calling card of in Austria’s capital city.

For the traditional wines of Wiener Gemischter Satz - the planting of different grape varieties together in one vineyard - a unique style profile has been developed; a style that reflects the wine's origin-typical aromas and flavors. The regulation for the Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC requires that at least three white quality wine varieties must be planted together in one vineyard that is listed in the Viennese vineyard register as Wiener Gemischter Satz. The highest portion of one grape variety must be no more than 50%; the third highest portion must be at least 10%. Wines without vineyard indication must be dry and without any prominent wood flavor. CHILE

Siegel Family Wines Alberto Siegel was born in Santiago in 1946, the third generation in Chile of an Austrian family. His grandfather was an Austrian architect that built some very important and traditional buildings in downtown Santiago, at the beginning of the 20th century, including the Chilean Federal Reserve. His father, Don Germán, was a viticulturist that spent most of his career in charge of Viña San Pedro's vineyards near the town of Molina, 140 miles south of Santiago. There Alberto grew up, literally in the middle of the vines. It was not a surprise when he decided to study Agronomy and specialize in winemaking at the Universidad Católica in Santiago.

Together with his father, Alberto founded Viña Siegel (now Siegel Family Wines) in 1980. They started planting vineyards in Colchagua and building the Winery in Santa Cruz. When Don Germán died in 1998, Alberto became the owner, together with his family. In the beginning, Viña Siegel only sold bulk wines to the biggest Chilean wineries, like Concha y Toro, San Pedro, and Santa Rita. In 1997, Alberto decided to enter the bottled wines business and made the necessary investments to go ahead with this project.

The Colchagua valley is located in the Central Zone of Chile. It is a 'Transverse Valley", which means that it is a valley formed by a river, in this case the Tinguiririca, running east-to-west towards the ocean. The valley cuts out at a ridge or mountain at right angles. The Colchagua valley is the leading fine wine producing region in Chile.

It is in this valley where Alberto Siegel grew his first vines, which would later become Siegel Wines. Now they have more than 700 hectares (1,729 acres) planted, which are located in the Andean foothills and the coastal zone of the valley. Their vineyard sites are:

• Los Lingues is one of Siegel's principal vineyards, consisting of 170 hectares (420 acres). It is in Los Lingues, Alto Colchagua, in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. It has a Mediterranean microclimate typical of the Andean foothills. Los Lingues is the Mapuche name for a tree. The soils in Los Lingues are characterized by having excellent drainage and are of Alluvial (deposited by water) and Colluvial (deposited by gravitational forces) origin. There is little organic and fertile material. Viña Siegel has found more than 60 different types of soil here. The exceptional combination of rocky soils is perfect for varieties such as , , and Grenache, while the moderately deep clay soils are ideal for Carménère, , Mourvèdre and Malbec. The climate and soils of Los Lingues give rise to more structured wines, with great body and color, smooth tannins of dry fruit and an exceptional balance.

• El Crucero vineyard in Palmilla has 60 hectares (148 acres) of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines produced from this vineyard are more concentrated, with mature fruits and very sweet tannins. El Crucero experiences a very diverse climate, warmer during the day and very cold at night. It is grown on alluvial soils, created from the waters of the mountain range.

• San Alberto de Peralillo vineyard is located 6km inland from Peralillo in a sector called Parrones, at the extreme west end of the Colchagua Valley, an ideal place due to its coastal-influenced climate. The soils originate from the large volcanic eruptions of the 'Ring of Fire' in the high Andes Mountains. 205 hectares (506 acres) planted with 8 different varieties.

Riebeek Valley Wine Company (Riebeek Cellars) Riebeek Valley Wine Company (formerly Riebeek Cellars) is located in the picturesque Riebeek Valley, in the heart of the Swartland wine region of South Africa. Established in 1941 by a group of nine local farmers, they are guided by Dutch & French traditions dating back 350 years.

It was Dutch explorer Pieter Cruythoff who stumbled upon the Riebeek Valley in 1661. Impressed by the single standing mountain, he called it Kasteelberg (“Castle Mountain”) commemorating the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, the fortress of Commander Jan van Riebeek. The twin towns, Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West, established at the foot of Kasteelberg, are therefore also suitably named after Van Riebeek. 27 years later, the French Huguenots arrived at the Cape, after fleeing persecution. They deemed the terroir more than suitable for the continuation of their esteemed winemaking legacy.

Today Riebeek Cellars is an authentic W.O. Swartland producer. They source grapes from a group of 40 growers across the Riebeek Valley, including 3rd and 4th generation wine grape growers. Sourcing only from this select group ensures continuity of the finest quality and preservation of the terroir. They produce around 1.2 million 9- liter cases per year.

The vineyards lie in a richly diverse area in terms of soil, climate, and topography. Vineyards are situated at heights that vary from 60 meters above sea level to 300 meters against the slopes of the Kasteelberg mountains. Because of the topography, the soils display the same rich variety, with Oakleaf and Dundee alluvial soil formed by sediment from die Berg River to Swartland and Glenrosa soils formed out of underlying shale along the Kasteelberg mountains. The notable ‘Koffieklip’ (coffee stone) soil is a combination of clay and iron-rich Ferricrete deposits, known widely throughout South Africa for its erosion-resistant qualities.

It is this unique terroir that distinguishes Riebeek’s wines. Rainfall occurs during winter months with enough cold units to ensure a proper rest phase for the vines before bud-break in early September. The summers are sunny and warm with cooling westerly winds that are ideal conditions for producing fine white and red wines.

A wide array of cultivars thrives in the Riebeek Valley, with Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc especially shining through because of the gravel and shale soil’s moderate growth and yields. The excellent terroir is complemented by modern viticulture techniques to ensure the grapes can ripen to their full potential.
