The caves have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and they are the inspiration for the label on these wines. Cueva de las Manos from Chakana Winery is a KPF trademarked name. This 100% Malbec undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and is aged in concrete vats for 10 months. Deep purple in color. Fruity intensity on the nose with floral notes. This wine was made by four mad cats - Mariana, Facundo, Gabriel and Juan - from their 20-hectare vineyard high in Alto Gualtallary, where the sun, slopes and limestone create the best wines in Valle de Uco. 100% Malbec spontaneously fermented with very little intervention to maintain fruit expression; aged in cement and French oak. Showing very deep color, red fruit aromas, spice, and herbal aromatics with an intensely mineral palate. 92 pts - Descorchados Suggested Retail Price: $20.99 / bottle 4 AUSTRALIA 7. 2020 Grace Town, Margaret River Chardonnay 12/750ml Source: Australia – South Australia – Barossa Valley (from grower Franklin Tate) The Margaret River region is known around the world for its top-quality wines. While the region produces less than three per cent of Australia's wine, it accounts for more than a fifth of its premium wine. Moderate coastal influences in yield wine with tropical fruit notes. The wine was fermented with a yeast strain from Burgundy, known to increase texture during fermentation. During the 4 months after alcoholic fermentation, the winemakers stirred the lees (dead yeast cells) which increases mouthfeel and adds texture to the wine. Grace Town Chardonnay displays a range of flavors – melon, nectarine, citrus, toasted almond, and nougat. The palate is delightfully complex yet soft with excellent fruit intensity, and spice from the French oak. Suggested Retail Price: $16.99 / bottle 8. 2018 Rubus, Barossa Shiraz 12/750ml Source: Australia – South Australia – Barossa Valley (St. Kitts Vineyard sourced) 98% Shiraz and 2% Viognier. The Viognier was co-fermented (50/50) with Shiraz (a small vat) and then back blended with Shiraz before filling to oak. The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Barossa Valley. 15% of the blend is super premium Shiraz, which was aged in American oak coopered in France. The remaining wine was also aged in American oak, most of which was sourced from the Appalachian Mountain range. The coopers say that these barrels add a spicy nose and creamy mid palate, almost like lemon cream. They tend to have less sweet oak character and therefore helps retain the perception of acid line. This richly concentrated Barossa Shiraz is indicative of the style for which Australia's top production region is famous. The wine is dark in color, rich and dense. There are ample tannins balanced by the powerful fruit. You will note the hints of blackberries, mint, and eucalyptus flavors upfront and in the finish. Suggested Retail Price: $25.99 / bottle 9. 2018 James Goddard, Shiraz 12/750ml Source: Australia – South Australia – Barossa Valley 100% Shiraz sourced from the Milton Park vineyard in the north of Eden Valley and the St Kitts vineyard in the far northern area of the Barossa. Aged in French and American oak for 10-12 months. The nose shows lifted plums, vibrant purple berries, and a delicate spice note. The palate has concentrated satsuma plum, blackberry with lovely charry oak in the background. Long, juicy, and even with plush fruit on the finish. 92 pts – Wine & Spirits Magazine Suggested Retail Price: $24.99 / bottle 5 10. 2019 Thorn-Clarke, Shotfire, Shiraz 12/750ml Source: Australia – South Australia – Barossa Valley 100% Shiraz aged 14 months in 40% new American hogsheads with the balance going into 2nd and 3rd fill barrels. This is the top Aussie wine from KPF since 2002. Fran shares his story on how he discovered Thorn-Clarke and Shotfire Shiraz: "It was October 2001, and I was searching for and sourcing for Australian wines, as it was clear that Australia was going to become the "next big thing." After tasting about 100 assorted wines, I decided I liked the style of Barossa, Shiraz best - chocolate, cherries, mint, and eucalyptus - so I started focusing on Barossa growers (years later, Barossa Shiraz would develop its reputation as the Icon Shiraz for Australia). Late on a Thursday afternoon, the carrier delivered a beat-up box of 12 bottles from Australia, 10 of which were leaking. The box was from a guy named Steve Machin, who had just left Hardy's and was beginning work with the Clarke family on setting up a possible new brand. The samples were sticky and messy, but I popped the corks anyway ....and I was glad that I did. The wine inside tasted like Christmas - mint, eucalyptus, camphor, and evergreen aromas. Great acidity, color, flavor, and length of finish - very tasty. These samples were so good and so exciting, especially compared to what I had tasted prior, that I immediately called the number on the card. I didn't realize that it was a Perth number (Western Australia), and it was actually 3:00 in the morning. It turned out I was calling the residence of David and Cheryl Clarke, where a sleepy Cheryl answered the phone. I told her, you don't know who I am, but we are going to be doing business together very soon, and lots of it! After a few months of talking, faxing (yes, faxing) and sorting out the details, I began importing their wines. That super-star wine from the busted box of samples is the wine we know today as Shotfire Shiraz. It was originally called Stone Jar, but fortunately we came up with a better name. Many years and vintages later, I'm still glad to be importing Shotfire Shiraz and other Thorn-Clarke selections .... and I'm still glad that Cheryl Clarke woke up for that phone call." Striking deep red purple in color. A rich, voluptuous wine with aromas of blackcurrant and mulberries accompanied by notes of smokey oak and hints of cloves. The palate is filled with dark fruits and chocolate backed up by taut tannins and lingering oak. Suggested Retail Price: $25.99 / bottle 11. 2018 Thorn-Clarke, Single Vineyard, Grenache 6/750ml Source: Australia – South Australia – Barossa 100% Grenache aged 18 months in French oak. Unfiltered. The Single Vineyard Selection range focuses on single site, small batch wines, highlighting the true characteristics of each individual variety. Each block is hand selected by our winemaker and viticulturist each year, choosing the wines that best reflect the strengths of each individual vintage. Grenache from the Saleyards Road vineyard. Ruby in color with purple hues. Brimming with bright fruit notes of wild strawberries and cherry and backed up by subtle spice of white pepper. On the palate, the fruit continues with further notes of raspberries and plum with a hint of French oak.
