JUNIOR PROGRAM

FBYC JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM Soggy, Foggy Conditions Prevail at the Opti Team Trials The nation’s top Opti sailors gathered early May in Darien, CT for the 2009 Team Trials hosted by Noroton Yacht Club. FBYC was represented with seven of the 211 competitors in this qualifying event. The race committee held 12 races over four days on Long Island Sound; the Opti sailors’ equivalent to a grueling marathon. Competitors encountered challenging conditions, from shifty breeze ranging from 4-14 knots, strong spring tides, water temps at 50 degrees, and maximum air temperature in the low-60’s.

Alex Jacob, who had not been in an for Opti six months, offered, “I took a break from high Alex Jacob helping sister Erin tune her boat school 420 sailing to attend the Team Trials. My hope was that my daily practice in 20-25 knots before Day 1 of Team Trials. of wind on Buzzard’s Bay would help me excel in potentially brisk spring breezes,” continued Alex. “Unfortunately, my weight exploded after wrestling season to 117 pounds and the wind never allowed me to sit on the rail.” Despite the challenging conditions, Alex and fellow FBYC race team sailor Kendall Swenson, posted three top 10 fi nishes in the 12 race series. And, one of Kendall Swenson’s fi nishes included a bullet. “I was so excited when I heard that horn!” exclaimed Kendall. Having had a disappointing Team Trials performance last year in Annapolis, Kendall was determined to do better this year and exceeded her [and her parent’s] expectations by fi nishing 20th in the regatta. She qualifi ed for the national team as a result and will represent the United States at the IODA North American Championships in the Dominican Republic in July. Alex Jacob went into Team Trials with the goal to make the IODA World team (the top fi ve fi nishers). “Despite not meeting my goal, I am pleased with my 30th place fi nish,” said Alex. “It was a nice way to fi nish my Opti career.” [Editor’s note: We agree!] Other sailors from FBYC’s Junior Race Team -- Graeme Alderman, Alexander Hanna, Erin Jacob, Conrad Roos, and Eric Roos -- expressed some disappointment in their results but that didn’t deter them from making new friends, having fun, learning a lot, and creating many fond memories along the way. A couple even slipped in a side trip to New York City. While some of the FBYC sailors didn’t meet their personal goals at the regatta, they’re looking for ways to improve in the future. The FBYC Jr. Week, practice schedule, summer regatta circuit, and coaching by Peter Strong will give them Barbara and James Jacob transporting opti dollies many opportunities to do just that. We’re proud of all our FBYC junior sailors. just after the harbor start on Day 4 of Team Trials To see what Team Trials was like, check out this cool YouTube video from the Photo Boat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MsMF3yqQo8

FBYC Sailor Selected to Compete at Youth Champs The U.S. Youth Sailing Championships, started in 1973, showcases the nation’s top junior competitors in the Laser, , Club 420, and classes. Invitations to the Youth Champs are made by US Sailing’s Youth Championship Selection Committee, based on the review of the applicant’s entry forms. Kyle Swenson was selected this year to compete against 20 other Laser Radial sailors across the U.S. He will join fi ve other Chesapeake Bay skippers who were selected from the Laser Full Rig and Club 420 classes to compete June 25-30 at Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich, CT. While many Youth Championship graduates have gone on to lead successful college sailing programs and fi lled out the ranks of All-Americans, the event has stayed true to its goals: Kyle Swenson approaching the fi nish line • Provide a challenge to young sailors to grow beyond the skill levels used to win at the local and regional level • Serve as a bridge between Junior Sailing and College Sailing • Produce U.S. sailors capable of winning the World Youth Championships in big-fl eet races • Develop and identify talent for the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team • Motivate a lifetime commitment to sailing. Congratulations to Kyle Swenson and all the outstanding Chesapeake Bay sailors!

CRUZIN CORNER

May 16-17: MATHEWS YACHT CLUB CRUISE Saturday May 16th, the weatherman did not give us a very good forecast, but several boats ventured out to the Hole in the Wall. As often the case, the weatherman was wrong. The adventurous sailors enjoyed several hours of sun and fun on the beach. Explorers found an assortment of treasures from hats to a washed up shark. The kids spent much of their time enjoying the wild life on the beach and fl ying kites. The rookery has hatched and many young gulls took fl ight as we toured their home. In all a very exciting afternoon. As evening approached the sailors headed to Mathews Yacht Club. John Capperton of MYC welcomed and made us at home. We soon fi red up the grill and a number of FBYC people arrived by car. We laid out our appetizers and enjoyed a fi ne gathering of over 20 FBYC members and guest. Sunday morning proved the weatherman to be correct. The wind continued and rain had arrived. The sailors that spent the night at MYC enjoyed a fantastic breakfast at the restaurant. A number of the MYC members extended a welcoming hello and invited us back.

BLACKBEARD FESTIVAL CRUISE JUNE 6 – 9, 2009 Join us for a fun cruise to the southern part of the Bay. Saturday, June 6th, we will sail to Hampton to attend the Blackbeard Festival. There will be a limited number of slips at Hampton Yacht Club so let us know if you want a slip. Additional boats can anchor in Sunset Creek and dinghy to the Yacht Club for showers, dinner and fi reworks. The festival ends at 6:00 pm Sunday. For more information, go to www.blackbeardpiratefestival.com.Sunday, we will sail through the Norfolk harbour past the Navy ships and spend the night at the Norfolk Yacht Club. Dinner can either be on board or in the Grill at the Club. The pool and fi tness center are available. Monday morning we head back north to Mobjack Bay and the East River. Plan to anchor, raft for cocktails, and enjoy dinner on board. Tuesday morning, we will head back to Fishing Bay. Families are encouraged to attend. All plans are subject to change depending on weather and the mood of the crew. Register for this event at www.fbyc.net or contact Chairmen Charlie and Stella Jones at: H (336)273-9158 or O (336)272-0197.

FIREWORKS CRUISE 2009 Back by popular demand is our Fireworks Cruise. Plan to take off July 2nd & 3rd Thursday and Friday. Thursday sail to St. Mary’s City and anchor off the College dock. The current will be with us or slack until noon at Smith Pt. Then turning against us in the Potomac. We will have a group get together with drinks and a light meal on the dock / lawn on Friday at 1630 hrs. Then off to the concert on the lawn by Hillary Kole called “50’s 4th” & the 1812 Overture followed by Fireworks. Saturday sail to Reedville for their afternoon parade and evening Fireworks. The current should have little effect on this trip. We will anchor in Cockrell Creek. Dinner to be determined: on board, Crazy Crab or Tommy’s. Sunday sail back to FBYC. Again the current should not be much of a factor.

CRUISING REGATTA The cruising regatta is coming up on July 25th. This is a well attended regatta with a lot of fun for all of us. We need you to sign up and let us know what your rating is. If you don’t know or don’t have a rating or, perish the thought, don’t particularly care what your rating is then let us know that also and we will assign you a very favorable rating, unless of course your are a died in the wool racer. We also need a head count for the dinner afterwards which will be picnic style this year, fried chicken, potato salad, fruit, etc.. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available. We hope to see you there. Gordon and Sheila Nelson [email protected] 804-462-0095 June 2009 y www.fbyc.net y page 6
