COMING TOGETHER VIRTUALLY... CAN BRINGS US TOGETHER SPIRITUALLY. One of the blessings of the Jewish New Year is our religious imperative to let go of the past: past sins, past misdeeds and the weight of history as we move forward with a clean heart and a clean spirit. But how can we do this when the world that we live in won’t allow us to let go? How can we move on from the difficulties of this past year when we are still living within such a complicated time?

It is important for us to recall that many of our traditions ask us to take a leap of faith or suspend our rational thoughts and enter into a world of spiritual dimension. We live within this dichotomy always. On shabbat we are commanded to rest after all of our work is done, but we know, as did the rabbis, that this is never possible. Our work in the world is never done, but we must rest on shabbat as if our work was completed. We suspend the reality of our lives to rest knowing that after shabbat we will begin again our engagement in the world.

Time and time again during our Holy Days we read that Repentance, Prayer and Charity can annul God’s decree. However, we know that our actions, while not having the power to change the reality of time and space, can change how we respond to that reality. The potential to alter our reality exists within each of us: for blessing or curse.

For this year’s High Holy Days we will be honoring this same rabbinical dictum and suspend our reality to observe our holiest of days as if we weren’t living in a world that keeps us physically apart. We will find that our coming together virtually is what will bring us together spiritually and emotionally. In so doing, we will cleanse our souls and let go of the past, find meaning and purpose in the present and enter into the New Year refreshed and renewed.

We may wish for a different world than the one we are living in, but we have the power to define it and not let it define us.

Senior Rabbi

Rabbi Howard Needleman

3 CANTOR’S CORNER

OUR TIME. OUR TEST. And so the joke goes...how do you describe every Jewish holiday to your non Jewish friend...

“They tried to eradicate us, they failed, we’re still here, now let’s eat”. A ridiculous over simplification, but truth be told, essentially correct.

Our lives have changed so dramatically since March. Our ability to work, play, socialize, feel safe etc etc. We all know and are living this new and scary world. It seems like yesterday that our campus was a hub of activity and unbridled joy. The kids, services, parties, meetings (endless!), discussions and most of all love, are wonderful memories that live on in some form in our new world of virtual living.

If I’m being honest and direct, what has saddened me more than any of the dramatic Covid causing changes are members of our Temple family who have thrown in the proverbial rag. The value proposition doesn’t equate. I don’t like the ‘direction’ of the Temple. Someone didn’t treat me appropriately. There’s nothing there for me or the worst, “we’re taking a year off...but we’ll be back!”. Our community, Jewish continuity and the things which unite us are worth so much more than the sum of all of the above. Period. If there’s something that truly bothers you, speak out. Your voice won’t be heard if you’re not in the room. Make a difference. Don’t walk away.

5000 years of Jewish history has proven one thing. We are the arbitrators of our own destiny. We need each and every member of our family for our Temple to survive, flourish and be there when you or other Jews are searching out a space to be Jewish. Please contact me, the Rabbi, Dvir, Daniel Weinger or any member of the board of directors if there’s anything we can do to facilitate your continued participation in our family of families. The Temple will never make finances the issue, especially now. We want you. We need you. Please stay with us.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the hundreds who have already renewed their commitment and to so many who have responded to our call for help and given so generously of their time and resources.

With wishes for health, happiness and blessing.

5 HIGH HOLY DAYS 5781

Join us for a unique and incredibly engaging Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur High Holiday Experience. From the comfort of your homes, we’ll be inviting our Temple family members to participate by zoom in innovative and inspiring services capturing the gravitas, beauty and above all spirituality of these days of awe. Our services will include Rabbi Needleman, Cantor Goldman and our founding Rabbi Emeritus Sheldon J. Harr virtually beamed to our homes. Services will also include musical ensembles as well as prayers and songs featuring our choir, incredibly talented children and adults with our Cantor, members of our congregation reading Torah, blessings, readings and chanting Haftorot as well as impactful, relevant and motivating sermons from our Rabbis. If you would like to read Torah or chant a Haftorah / blessings, please click here by August 10 (Hebrew reading ability required). Rosh Hashanah morning, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services will be professionally produced as described above to ensure a seamless high caliber experience while emoting the family, heimishe and tremendous warmth that has been Kol Ami Emanu-El for close to five decades. Rosh Hashanah eve, day two and Yom Kippur afternoon will be more informal zoom services similar to our weekly Shabbat zoom. We are grateful for the generosity and kindness of those members of our Temple family who have made this dream of a high caliber professionally produced High Holiday experience into a reality. Please contact the clergy if you are able to add your support to this innovative project. We are constantly reevaluating the current situation and if possible and safe, we will provide an opportunity for in-person services in addition to streaming live services. Of course, we’ll keep you informed of all developments.

6 High Holiday Prayer Book and Goody Bag DRIVE BY Pick Up And Our Annual Food Drive...Our Tradition Continues Sunday’s September 6 and 13 10am-noon Drive by the front entrance and pick up a complimentary holiday prayer book (must be returned after the holidays), honey and a stress ball! Please use the shopping bag we give you to return full of non-perishable food items anytime until Yom Kippur. All food will be donated to the WECARE Food Pantry. The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. They could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations they receive year round from caring communities just like ours at TKAE!

Tzedakah - Giving Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El strives to create a Temple family for all our members. Since our inception we have celebrated thousands of b’nai mitzvah, and uncounted numbers of baby namings, consecrations, confirmations, weddings, anniversaries and other joyous life-cycle events. We have also stood by each other during challenging times: a shoulder to cry on, someone to hug, a caring committee to help with shiva – this is our Temple family. Your charitable contributions to Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El will help ensure that the values and ideas, the celebrations and unique occasions, which have linked our people in an unbreakable chain of tradition for 3,000 years will be perpetuated for future generations. Your contributions will have a meaningful effect on the lives of the thousands to whom Kol Ami Emanu-El is home, as well as the people beyond our walls who we continue to help.

High Holiday Virtual Service Production Our services this year will be professionally produced utilizing cameras, lighting, sound equipment and professional live-streaming services. Our objective is to produce services of a high caliber without interruptions common to regular zoom calls, while exuding the heimishe and engaging experience that is Kol Ami Emanu-El. Please help make our services beautifully uplifting and inspirational with your donation. All donations will be recognized in the credits of these productions.

Inter-Generational Membership We encourage multi-generational experiences. Praying together as a family during the high holidays can be a wonder- ful and meaningful experience. We have what is called “Inter-Generational Membership.” So what are the details? If a full paying family member (referred to as a “core family”) are members in good standing, their senior parents can be- come members for less than half of what their normal membership dues would be. What a wonderful gift to give your parents! For more information, please call the Temple office or stop by to learn more and make arrangements.

10 FROM OURFROM PRESIDENT A NEW WAY FOR A NEW YEAR I confess that I approached this article with apprehension when first learning that the theme for this issue is the high holidays. Although a high holiday theme for this edition of the 8200 makes sense, because of our deadlines I am writing this in mid-July. With so much uncertainty about how this year’s high holidays will unfold, I feared that anything I wrote would quickly become outdated. However, I eventually realized that my initial concerns were unwarranted.

By way of background, when it comes to our plans for the holidays, I have told everyone I have spoken with that we will definitely broadcast a virtual service and that so long as it is legally permitted we intend to offer some form of live in person services for those wishing to attend provided we can do so with proper social Daniel S. Weinger distancing measures in place. By the time you read this, you will likely know what I TEMPLE PRESIDENT currently do not; whether in person services are an option this year.

Nevertheless, my lack of clairvoyance as I write this cannot detract from the religious significance of the Jewish New Year and Day of Atonement that is far greater than a one-year change in logistics. I have spent a lifetime becoming accustomed to the beauty and warmth of the “live” high holiday services at Temple Kol Ami Emanu- El. Yet I also recognize that above all else the high holidays are a time of prayer, reflection, and an examination of our relationship with others and with G-d. I know that the temple will provide us with both the spirituality we crave and the sense of community we love regardless of the form this year’s services take. Whether in person or virtually, I look forward to wishing each of you l’shanah tovah and an easy fast. Dan Daniel S. Weinger President Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El

13 RELIGIOUS SCHOOL PART OF THIS COMMUNITY It is our hope you are enjoying your summer time with your family. We are in the process of preparing for a new school year like no other. It is our priority to find the best ways to nurture our families’ souls and bring Jewish content to our children. The current circumstances call for creativity and adaptation, and TKAE is ready for the challenge. As Rabbi Sacks says “We are as great as the challenges we have the courage to undertake.”

During these uncertain times, it can be difficult to plan for the coming months, weeks, days, or even dinner. Amidst all of this uncertainty, one of the things that we can count on is our unwavering commitment to each other and the immeasurable returns gained through being a part of this community.

VALERIA MICHANIE We are optimistic about this coming year, and excited to announce we will be offering RELIGIOUS SCHOOL an Onsite and Online Religious School Program. No matter what you choose, your DIRECTOR teachers, and clergy will be ready and awaiting your return. In addition to our Religious School options, we are also opening a new program called Shul-in. This program will provide our students a safe place for Onsite supervised E-Learning at TKAE. Program will be for students in grades K-5th and will operate daily from 7:30 AM until 3:30PM. Jewish education and Hebrew instruction will be included on their daily schedule. We are also working on an alternative program to our traditional “Gesher” called “Gesher Express”. For this program, students will meet online, 3 times a week for Hebrew instruction. This will be an intense program for Hebrew speakers.

Registration for the 2020-21 TKAE school-year is now open and we hope you will take advantage of one of the many programs we put together for our children.

Like our ancestors before us, we will persevere through these trying times and gain strength by overcoming the challenges. Our children will only benefit from continuing their Jewish education, and arguably need the wisdom of Torah and community engagement now more than ever. We look forward to another meaningful year for the TKAE Religious School and wish you all the best.

We are family. We are community. We are in this together. ֙חזק חזק ונתחזק May you go from strength to strength

16 Back to School….First day Excitement!

17 YOUTH PROGRAM NEW OPPORTUNITIES This past summer I had hoped to be in the mountains of North Georgia with many of our kids at Camp Coleman. We all know that Coleman as well as many other sleep away camps were unable to open due to the Corona virus. In early May, when we learned of the change to the summer we made the decision to create a place for elementary age children whose parents needed a place to safely send them while they returned to work. In a very short time we were able to create a day camp that followed the CDC guidelines. Our campers enjoyed music, dance, drama and Krav Maga from teachers who zoomed into their rooms from all over the country. They made arts and crafts projects, experienced nature, swam and more. It was amazing to get to see the interaction they had been missing with their peers over the previous months. I am looking forward to working with Valeria as we begin the Shul-in program also in a safe and clean environment.

As we get ready to start the year 5781 I look forward to resuming Wednesday night dinner and programs with KAFTY, Tuesday nights with OMGJK, trips to trampoline gyms, bowling, escape rooms, zoos and programs with magicians, animals and scientists with LOL, KEFTY, KATONTY and Jewniors.

For now, we will continue to provide online opportunities for all groups as well as look for ways to bring small groups together in safe ways to hopefully provide some of that interaction that we are all missing..

THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER19 8TH 20 WOMEN OF REFORM JUDAISM NEW BEGINNINGS BRING HOPE

Every year, as Rosh Hashanah approaches, I get that tingling feeling of anticipation for new beginnings. To me, the high holidays evoked memories of starting a new school year, buying new clothes, and seeing my friends after a long summer away. As an adult, I still get excited to start the new year and see my friends as we start a new year of Sisterhood programs and see familiar faces at the High Holiday services.

This year looks a little different than in years past. Who could have imagined that we would be ending 5780 in such a way? These last few months have been isolating for some, heartbreaking for others, and fearful as we still live with the unknown of what is to come. And yet, as I approach 5781, I still get that tingling feeling of excitement for new beginnings. I feel comfort in knowing that I will be able to “attend” services, whether in person or virtually. Although my holiday table will have fewer people around it this year, I feel ELISE LERNER PRESIDENT OF joy in knowing that my family is healthy and happy. The holiday may be WRJ/SISTERHOOD bittersweet this year, however new beginnings bring hope. I feel hope for the future as I know that we are a resilient people who will rise past this and come out on the other end stronger. This past year has been tough, but has given me perspective on what is truly important; family, health and happiness.

21 TKAE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

SWARTZON FAMILY Members of the Temple: 3 years We met through the modern Jewish matchmaker...JDate. Michael, originally from Miami, met me (Dara) in Kansas City while doing his residency in family medicine. I, born and raised in Kansas, was working in medical sales while on the hunt for a Jewish husband. We were married in 2012, and after a fellowship year at the University of New Mexico, we made South Florida our home. Jews, palm trees, and sunshine, the best. At first, we were newlyweds, so we moved to Brickell. After having two kids and a dog in a small condo, we made a move to Plantation.

Michael works as a sports medicine physician with Miami Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute. I still work in medical sales. I am also the president of the TKAE PTO board and serve on the Temple Board.

We have two beautiful children and one due August 14th. Evia is five and had a blast at Kol Ami for the last three years. We can’t believe she is starting Kindergarten this fall. Ethan is three and will be starting Nursery this year at Kol Ami. We are hoping the new baby will follow in their footsteps at TKAE.

Being Jewish is a significant part of our identity. Michael’s family is Israeli, and he grew up going to Israel multiple times every year. He also went to medical school at Tel-Aviv University. We try to make a family trip there every other year (we wish it were every year).

Trips to Israel to see the family and sites are fun, but Jewish holidays and festivals are an important tradition for us. Having Shabbat dinner every Friday night as a family is such a fun part of our week. Holidays and festivals are our times to be together as a family and celebrate Judaism. We are happy to be members of TKAE and are looking forward to being a part of our Jewish community for many years to come.

Michael, Dara, Evia, & Ethan Swartzon

22 PREPARING FOR THE HIGH HOLIDAYS IN TEMPLE FRIENDS CHALLENGING TIMES

As Jewish communities grapple with how to celebrate the High Holidays this season, we as individual families are doing the same thing.

As I write this article for the September / October 8200, Temple Kol Ami Emamu-El is planning an online virtual worship experience for all the Holidays. These services will be pre-recorded and made by a professional production company. It will be the same service as you would have being in the Temple, except you will be able to view the services from your home.

The Temple will be providing High Holiday packages for pick-up. Those people who do not feel comfortable picking them up, the packages will be delivered to your home.

Mark Horowitz We are pained to be physically separated from our extended temple family, TEMPLE FRIENDS however, lets do our best to stay spiritually connected with our virtual Lunch & PRESIDENT Learn programs, Schmooze with the Cantor and our virtual Friday night services. This holiday the services will seem more intimate from our homes.

I know everyone is frustrated . I know we all miss each other very much. We want to reach out and give each other a hug. We need to remain physically distant so that we can stay healthy.

On behalf of the Immediate Past President Jeffrey Weinstein and myself, we want to wish everyone a Sweet & Healthy 5781.

L’Shanah Tovah

LILLY HIRSCH - AUGUST 22ND, 10:15AM Lilly Hirsch is entering 8th grade at Pioneer Middle School. Lilly is active in gymnastics, having been on the competitive team at Park Avenue Gymnastics for the last six years. She also loves her summers at Blue Star Camps and just returned from her 5th year there. Lilly also enjoys fitness and yoga, hanging out with friends and enjoys traveling with her family.

For Lilly’s Mitzvah Project, she co-founded the Birthday Blast program in May 2019 with friend Leigh Aronovitz. The goal is to help less fortunate families be able to give their children extra items to help make a special birthday. They have partnered with the Cupboard, a kosher food pantry operated by the Goodman Jewish Family Services (JFS) of Broward County, to stock the shelves with birthday supplies. Items include party decorations, plates, cups, napkins as well as cake mixes, frosting, sprinkles and birthday candles. Lilly & Leigh coordinated multiple volunteer events with family and friends to help make the bags. Lilly will continue to support the program at the Cupboard packing groceries and making deliveries with family and help the Birthday Blast program continue through Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El

HAILEY WEINGER - AUGUST 29TH, 5:30PM Hailey Renee Weinger is an 8th grader at Imagine Charter School in Plantation. She began her religious education at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El in the Early Childhood Program when she was only two years old. Hailey is passionate about dancing. She has been taking dance classes for most of her life, including ballet, jazz, lyrical, and hip hop. One of Hailey’s greatest joys is performing every year in her studio’s annual dance recital.

For her Mitzvah Project, Hailey travelled to Israel where she worked along with her Israeli cousins sorting and packaging food at Pantry Packers, which is the food distribution project of Colel Chabad and delivers food to Israel’s needy.

Hailey’s family is so proud of all of her accomplishments and are looking forward to celebrating her at her Bat Mitzvah service, whether it be in person or virtually

NAAVA WEST – SEPTEMBER 25TH, 7:30PM Naava attends University School, and is entering eighth grade. She is on the University School Competitive Cheer team. She is a flyer, and also enjoys dancing. Her mitzvah project was helping to raise money for Happi Farm in Davie. They offer therapeutic horseback riding, and they were affected by Covid. Being that her sister is an avid horse rider this was meaningful to our family.

SHAYNA ROSE SCHMIDT – OCTOBER 10TH, 10:15AM Shayna Rose Schmidt is a 8th Grader at Indian Ridge Middle School in Davie, FL. Shayna is a kind and sweet young lady that brings joy wherever she goes. She is an honor roll student, a good athlete, and a great friend. When Shayna has free time, you will often find her around water, where she enjoys competitive swimming, water skiing, and other water sports. Shayna is a huge fan of the TV series “” and was very excited to visit Scranton, Pennsylvania this summer, the home of Dunder Mifflin.

For her Mitzvah Project, Shayna will be helping to raise awareness and collect donations for the ALS Genius Fund. ALS, often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is the most common degenerative disease of the adult motor system. Shayna’s passion to help raise awareness for this cause is due in large part to her Aunt Mollie and Uncle Daniel, who started the ALS Genius Fund.

Shayna’s entire family is very proud to see her continue this tradition of tzedakah and of service to her community. Shayna’s father and stepmother, Justin and Rachel Schmidt, Shayna’s mother, Marisa Elkman-Schmidt, and her brother and sister, Jacob and Maci, are all extremely excited to celebrate this special occasion with Shayna as she becomes a Bat Mitzvah.

Anyone interested in making a donation to, or learning more about the ALS Genius Fund, please find them at https://alsgeniusfund.com/donate/

ISAAC BERGER – OCTOBER 24TH, 10:15AM Isaac is currently a 8th grader at Imagine Charter School in Plantation. He began his education in the Temple Kol Ami Early Childhood Program before he was even 2 years old, and he continues to actively participate in the Temple’s Youth Group program.

Isaac loves fishing, golf, lacrosse, boxing and spending time with his family and friends. Isaac enjoys traveling, boating and wakeboarding, and he looks forward to his summers at Camp Pinewood in North Carolina. For his Mitzvah Project, Isaac has chosen to volunteer and raise funds for Covenant House Fort Lauderdale, a non-profit organization which provides an array of services to runaway and homeless youth, such as crisis shelters, healthcare, educational support, job readiness training programs, and drug abuse .

SYDNEY BERGER – OCTOBER 24TH, 10:15AM Sydney is currently a 7th grader at Imagine Charter School in Plantation. Like her brother Isaac, she began her education in the Temple Kol Ami Early Childhood Program at a very young age, continuing there until elementary school.

Sydney is passionate about all things equestrian. She loves riding and caring for her pony, showing in horseback competitions, and spending time at the barn where she takes care of the barn animals and hangs out with her friends. When she’s not riding, Sydney loves to bake, draw and paint. Sydney also spends her summers at Camp Pinewood in North Carolina. For her Mitzvah Project, Sydney has chosen to volunteer and raise funds for local South Florida horse and animal rescues.

25 Mazal Tov to our long time members Michael and Lois Linder. Michaels’ poem ‘Haifa Harbor’ has been selected for inclusion in the latest edition of the CCAR (Central Conference of American Rabbis) Journal

Haifa Harbor

I have loved you on the top of peaks surrounded by trees in the mist of early morning

On your shores your rhythmic waves approach and depart with the cries of circling gulls

I have compared our love to sunsets, to children laughing to nothing else except

A land where the spirit of David bade us to write new psalms where the voice of Solomon sang to us in silence
