RABBI DR. EDWARD MALINE Z”L 2 RABBI EMERITUS TEMPLE EMANU-EL RABBI REFLECTIONS COMING TOGETHER VIRTUALLY... CAN BRINGS US TOGETHER SPIRITUALLY. One of the blessings of the Jewish New Year is our religious imperative to let go of the past: past sins, past misdeeds and the weight of history as we move forward with a clean heart and a clean spirit. But how can we do this when the world that we live in won’t allow us to let go? How can we move on from the difficulties of this past year when we are still living within such a complicated time? It is important for us to recall that many of our traditions ask us to take a leap of faith or suspend our rational thoughts and enter into a world of spiritual dimension. We live within this dichotomy always. On shabbat we are commanded to rest after all of our work is done, but we know, as did the rabbis, that this is never possible. Our work in the world is never done, but we must rest on shabbat as if our work was completed. We suspend the reality of our lives to rest knowing that after shabbat we will begin again our engagement in the world. Time and time again during our Holy Days we read that Repentance, Prayer and Charity can annul God’s decree. However, we know that our actions, while not having the power to change the reality of time and space, can change how we respond to that reality. The potential to alter our reality exists within each of us: for blessing or curse. For this year’s High Holy Days we will be honoring this same rabbinical dictum and suspend our reality to observe our holiest of days as if we weren’t living in a world that keeps us physically apart. We will find that our coming together virtually is what will bring us together spiritually and emotionally. In so doing, we will cleanse our souls and let go of the past, find meaning and purpose in the present and enter into the New Year refreshed and renewed. We may wish for a different world than the one we are living in, but we have the power to define it and not let it define us. Senior Rabbi Rabbi Howard Needleman 3 CANTOR’S CORNER OUR TIME. OUR TEST. And so the joke goes...how do you describe every Jewish holiday to your non Jewish friend... “They tried to eradicate us, they failed, we’re still here, now let’s eat”. A ridiculous over simplification, but truth be told, essentially correct. Our lives have changed so dramatically since March. Our ability to work, play, socialize, feel safe etc etc. We all know and are living this new and scary world. It seems like yesterday that our campus was a hub of activity and unbridled joy. The kids, services, parties, meetings (endless!), discussions and most of all love, are wonderful memories that live on in some form in our new world of virtual living. If I’m being honest and direct, what has saddened me more than any of the dramatic Covid causing changes are members of our Temple family who have thrown in the proverbial rag. The value proposition doesn’t equate. I don’t like the ‘direction’ of the Temple. Someone didn’t treat me appropriately. There’s nothing there for me or the worst, “we’re taking a year off...but we’ll be back!”. Our community, Jewish continuity and the things which unite us are worth so much more than the sum of all of the above. Period. If there’s something that truly bothers you, speak out. Your voice won’t be heard if you’re not in the room. Make a difference. Don’t walk away. 5000 years of Jewish history has proven one thing. We are the arbitrators of our own destiny. We need each and every member of our family for our Temple to survive, flourish and be there when you or other Jews are searching out a space to be Jewish. Please contact me, the Rabbi, Dvir, Daniel Weinger or any member of the board of directors if there’s anything we can do to facilitate your continued participation in our family of families. The Temple will never make finances the issue, especially now. We want you. We need you. Please stay with us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the hundreds who have already renewed their commitment and to so many who have responded to our call for help and given so generously of their time and resources. With wishes for health, happiness and blessing.
