TAD “Inhaler” Limited Tan with Black & Red Swirl “Mutt Mix” Vinyl Edition Cat. No: RGM1211 (Real Gone Music) UPC: 848064012115 Grunge metal greatness! This 1993 record marked Tad's major label debut (on the Giant imprint), and for it the band brought in Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis to produce. The result was a more focused album than Tad's previous outings, laced with piledriver riffs 'n' hooks and some wicked humor, even as the band grappled with such disturbing topics as Ted Bundy and child abduction. The band toured with Soundgarden behind this record; though that didn't lead to the hoped-for commercial breakthrough, it did cement Inhaler's status as the go-to record in Tad's catalog. Only out on LP for a heartbeat upon its initial release, and never reissued since, Inhaler comes in tan with black and red swirl "Mutt Mix" vinyl limited to 3000 copies for Record Store Day. Managing the Boundaries of Taste: Culture, Valuation, and Computational Social Science Abstract The proliferation of cultural objects, such as music, books, film and websites, has created a new problem: How do consumers determine the value of cultural objects in an age of information glut? Crowd-sourcing – paralleling word-of-mouth recommendations – has taken center stage, yet expert opinion has also assumed renewed importance. Prior work on the valuation of artworks and other cultural artifacts identifies ways critics establish and maintain classificatory boundaries, such as genre. We extend this research by offering a theoretical approach emphasizing the dynamics of critics’ valuation and classification. Empirically, this analysis turns to Pitchfork.com, an influential music review website, to examine the relationship between classification and valuation. Using topic models of fourteen years of Pitchfork.com album reviews (n=14,495), we model the dynamics of valuation through genre and additional factors predictive of positive reviews and cultural consecration. We use gold record awards to study the relationship between valuation processes and commercial outcomes.

JEN CLOHER Jen Cloher Album Biography: June 6, 2017 Album Release: August 11, 2017 “It’s self-titled.” The three-word answer is all that Jen Cloher requires to describe her new album, a letter in triplicate addressed to music, to Australia and to love. It’s the most honest album she’s ever written. Jen liKes best to tell the truth. Jen Cloher is the culmination of a period of artistic and personal growth in which the artist tooK her rightful place as the punk-rocK figurehead of Melbourne’s famous DIY music scene. The NIDA graduate is an outspoKen advocate for artist rights, a label boss and band-leader, she also happens to be the partner of acclaimed songwriter Courtney Barnett. Cloher’s fascinating life-story is enough justification to taKe notice here, but it’s the music that will have you returning to this album again and again. Cloher says: “It’s a classic rocK album, recorded live in one room with minimal overdubs… I’m not too good at going into descriptive language around my own music but I suppose it is intimate without ever feeling too precious.” The bulK of Cloher’s album was recorded in October 2016 by Greg WalKer amidst the rolling greenery of Jumbunna in Victoria’s Gippsland, these are songs of distance and songs of driving. Four years on, the band that first played together on Cloher’s acclaimed third album, the Australian Music Prize nominated In Blood Memory, are bold and assured. The songs are split here and there by the melodic intricacy of guitarist Courtney Barnett while drummer Jen Sholakis and bassist Bones Sloane add weight and space, playing only what is needed, leaving room for the songs to breathe, transform and soar.

  • 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit".

  • A Lengthwise Slash David Grubbs, 2011 I First Met Arnold Dreyblatt In
A Lengthwise Slash David Grubbs, 2011 I first met Arnold Dreyblatt in 1996 when he came to Chicago at Jim O’Rourke’s urging. At the time Jim and I were the two core members of the group Gastr del Sol, and we also co-directed the Dexter’s Cigar reissue label for Drag City. The basic idea of Dexter’s Cigar was that there were any number of out-of-print, underappreciated recordings that, if heard, would put contemporary practitioners to shame. Just try to stack your solo free-improv guitar playing versus Derek Bailey’s Aida. Think your power electronics group is hot? Care to take a listen to Merzbow’s Rainbow Electronics 2? Do you fancy a shotgun marriage of critical theory and ramshackle d.i.y. pop? But you’ve never heard the Red Krayola and Art and Language’s Corrected Slogans? Gastr del Sol work time was as often as not spent sharing new discoveries and musical passions. Jim and I both flipped to Dreyblatt’s 1995 Animal Magnetism (Tzadik; which Jim nicely described “as if the Dirty Dozen Brass Band got a hold of some of Arnold’s records and decided to give it a go”) as well as his ingenious 1982 album Nodal Excitation (India Navigation), with its menagerie of adapted and homemade instruments (midget upright pianoforte, portable pipe organ, double bass strung with steel wire, and so on). We knew upon a first listen that we were obliged to reissue Nodal Excitation. The next time that Arnold blew through town, we had him headline a Dexter’s Cigar show at the rock club Lounge Ax.
