Amphipoda of the Northeast Pacific (Equator to Aleutians, intertidal to abyss): IX. Photoidea - a review Donald B. Cadien, LACSD 22 July 2004 (revised 21 May 2015) Preface The purpose of this review is to bring together information on all of the species reported to occur in the NEP fauna. It is not a straight path to the identification of your unknown animal. It is a resource guide to assist you in making the required identification in full knowledge of what the possibilities are. Never forget that there are other, as yet unreported species from the coverage area; some described, some new to science. The natural world is wonderfully diverse, and we have just scratched its surface. Introduction to the Photoidea Over more than a century the position of the photids has been in dispute. Their separation was recommended by Boeck (1871), a position maintained by Stebbing (1906). Others have relegated the photids to the synonymy of the isaeids, and taxa considered here as photids have been listed as members of the Family Isaeidae in most west coast literature (i.e. J. L. Barnard 1969a, Conlan 1983). J. L. Barnard further combined both families, along with the Aoridae, into an expanded Corophiidae. The cladistic examination of the corophioid amphipods by Myers and Lowry (2003) offered support to the separation of the photids from the isaeids, although the composition of the photids was not the same as viewed by Stebbing or other earlier authors. The cladistic analysis indicated the Isaeidae were a very small clade separated at superfamily level from the photids, the neomegamphopids, and the caprellids within the infraorder Caprellida.

E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract Two species of the family Kamakidae collected from tidal flats on the southern west coast of Korea are reported, along with descriptions and illustrations. Kamaka excavata Ariyama, 2007 has the following unique character states on gnatho- pod 2 in the mature male: a wider coxa, a long and acute process of the propodus, and an excavation on inner-distal margin of dactylus. Although the new species, Kamaka rostra sp. nov. has gnathopod 2 similar to those of K. biwae Uéno, 1943, K. morinoi Ariyama, 2007, and K. appendiculata Ariyama et al., 2010, it can be easily distinguished by the plumose setae on the inner margin of the dactylus and by the spines on the inner lobe of the maxilliped in the mature male. In addition, this new species shows some particular characteristics among the species of Kamaka, such as the anterior cephalic lobe is not rounded but produced as a triangular shape, and uneven protuberances ranged along the inner-distal margin of the fla- gellum from peduncular article 5 to fourth proximal segment on antenna 2 in the mature male.

1 AMPHIPOD NEWSLETTER 32 This is the last amphipod newsletter that I prepare, before I officially retire from my curatorship and professorate at the University of Tromsø per 1 January 2008. I shall continue to work on amphipods, but it will become still more complicated to keep à jour with the extensive amphipod literature, and if colleagues deem that it is still useful to have an Amphipod Newsletter, somebody soon has to take over the responsibility, although I shall contribute as much as I can as long as I can. Also this time I have had much help with the bibliography; as usual Egor Vinogradov (Moskva) and Franz Krapp (Bonn) regularly sent in references, and Drs Ariyama and Tomikawa helped out with Chinese and Japanese literature. Martin Thiel sent me the abstracts of the Coquimbo conference. The In Memoriam to Dr Valery Kudrjaschov was written by Dr Ludmila Budnikova and Natalia Demchenko, Vladivostok. (Eds) (2009) Benthic Amphipoda (Crustacea: Peracarida) of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Zootaxa, 2260, 1–930. Abstract Two new species of kamakids are reported from Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. One is attributed to the genus Gammaropsella Myers, the other to Kamaka Derzhavin. Key words: Crustacea, Amphipoda, Kamakidae, Great Barrier Reef, Australia, taxonomy, new species, Gammaropsella saepta, Kamaka silvana Introduction The Kamakidae are found primarily in tropical seas but also in the Mediterranean and in the deep sea. The family Kamakidae was erected by Myers & Lowry (2003). The two genera reported here belong to the subfamily Kamakinae, which is characterised by strongly produced head lateral lobes that completely enclose the eye. They are tube-dwelling corophioid amphipods, but we know little about their way of life. Material and methods The descriptions were generated from a DELTA database (Dallwitz 2005) to kamakid species. Material was hand-collected on scuba and by kick-net sampling in mangroves. All material is lodged in the Australian Museum, Sydney (AM). A set of colour plates, a list of standard abbreviations and detailed station data is available in Lowry & Myers (2009). A CD (Benthic Amphipoda (Crustacea: Peracarida) of the Great Barrier Reef: Interactive Keys) is available with the book, or the keys can be accessed at the crustacea.net website.

HUGheS Australian Museum Research Institute, 6 College Street, Sydney NSW 2010, Australia [email protected] ABSTRACT. Five known and four new species of amphipod are documented from Timor-Leste. The species biodiversity of the region shows a close affinity to what is known from tropical north Australia. Although records of amphipods from the Lesser Sunda Region are limited, the species recorded have distributions throughout the broader Indo-Pacific. The new speciesAmpithoe atauro, Elasmopus tibarensis, Linguimaera christorei and Quadrimaera metinaro are described herein. HUGHES, L. E. 2015.
