  • Hearst Pays $81.3M for Stake in Awesomenesstv 12 December 2014
Hearst pays $81.3M for stake in AwesomenessTV 12 December 2014 Hearst Corp. is betting $81.3 million that Internet video network AwesomenessTV will live up to its name. The investment announced Thursday gives Hearst a 25 percent stake in AwesomenessTV, which DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. acquired in May 2013. The deal is the latest to underscore the growing popularity of Internet video services. Glendale- based DreamWorks bought AwesomenessTV, or ATV, at a price that could exceed $100 million if certain financial targets are reached. Just 19 months later, Awesomeness TV has now been valued at $325 million, based on Hearst's investment. ATV, which tailors its videos for teens, got its start with a small piece of the $100 million that Google Inc.'s YouTube doled out to about 100 programmers in 2012. New York-based Hearst, which owns 29 traditional television stations, hopes to help ATV expand its audience beyond the viewers who watch the network's clips about 800 million times per month. Among other things, Hearst is allowing ATV to use its video-on-demand technology to expand. "For us, it's very important to make a bet on the future of how content is created," said Hearst CEO Steven Swartz. ATV's stable of talent includes Cimorelli, Miss Glamorazzi, Tyler Oakley, Cameron Dallas and Nash Grier. © 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. • Today Your Barista Is: Genre Characteristics in the Coffee Shop Alternate Universe
Today Your Barista Is: Genre Characteristics in The Coffee Shop Alternate Universe Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Katharine Elizabeth McCain Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee Sean O’Sullivan, Advisor Matthew H. Birkhold Jared Gardner Elizabeth Hewitt 1 Copyright by Katharine Elizabeth McCain 2020 2 Abstract This dissertation, Today Your Barista Is: Genre Characteristics in The Coffee Shop Alternate Universe, works to categorize and introduce a heretofore unrecognized genre within the medium of fanfiction: The Coffee Shop Alternate Universe (AU). Building on previous sociological and ethnographic work within Fan Studies, scholarship that identifies fans as transformative creators who use fanfiction as a means of promoting progressive viewpoints, this dissertation argues that the Coffee Shop AU continues these efforts within a defined set of characteristics, merging the goals of fanfiction as a medium with the specific goals of a genre. These characteristics include the Coffee Shop AU’s structure, setting, archetypes, allegories, and the remediation of related mainstream genres, particularly the romantic comedy. The purpose of defining the Coffee Shop AU as its own genre is to help situate fanfiction within mainstream literature conventions—in as much as that’s possible—and laying the foundation for future close reading. This work also helps to demonstrate which characteristics are a part of a communally developed genre as opposed to individual works, which may assist in legal proceedings moving forward. However, more crucially this dissertation serves to encourage the continued, formal study of fanfiction as a literary and cultural phenomenon, one that is beginning to closely analyze the stories fans produce alongside the fans themselves.

  • Television Reviews
Page 97 TELEVISION REVIEWS Sympathy for the Devil? Appropriate Adult (ITV 1, September 2011) Not much feted previously for the quality of its dramas (unless it was by fans of outlandish psycho thrillers about the perils of adultery), ITV has recently been enjoying a renaissance in quality that has made even the BBC sit up and take notice, as witnessed by lastyear’s much hyped Downtown Abbey / Upstairs Downstairs faceoff (the enjoyably preposterous Downtown Abbey walked away with all the prizes and plaudits). However, producing a drama based on events surrounding one of the most notorious crime stories of the 1990s – the serial killing exploits of gruesome twosome Fred and Rosemary West – was always going to be a rather more delicate proposition than assembling an assortment of noted Thesps in a stately home and letting them get on with talking ponderously about how “War changes things...” Let’s face it, the serial killer biopic is a particularly debased format, as epitomised most vividly in the distasteful antics of the now defunct (but much lamented, at least until its partial reincarnation as Palisades/Tartan) Tartan Metro company, which was a respectful and intelligent distributor of international and hardtoget genre films but which also helped bankroll three particularly regrettable movies of this type. These were; the sordid, workmanlike Ed Gein (2000), the deeply offensive (on many levels) Ted Bundy (2003) – which actually soundtracked a montage sequence depicting Bundy’s peripatetic assaults on dozens of young women with comedy music and the supposedly “hilarious” sound of his victims being hit on the head – and the equally repugnant The Hillside Strangler (2006).
