Elegy, Op. 4/1 (First movement from the Symphonic Suite, Op. 4) 5:53 –2– Leevi Madetoja To be an orchestral composer in Finland as a contemporary of Sibelius and nevertheless create an independent composer profile was no mean feat, but Leevi Madetoja managed it. Though even he was not LEEVI MADETOJA completely immune to the influence of SYMPHONY NO. 2 his great colleague, he did find a voice for KULLERVO ELEGY himself where the elegiac nature of the landscape and folk songs of his native province of Ostrobothnia merged with a French elegance. Madetoja’s three symphonies did not follow the trail blazed by Sibelius, and another mark of his independence as a composer is that his principal works include two operas, Pohjalaisia (The Ostrobothnians, 1924) and Juha (1935), a genre that Sibelius never embraced. Madetoja emerged as a composer while still a student at the Helsinki Music Institute, when Robert Kajanus conducted his first orchestral work, elegy (1909) for strings, in January 1910. The work was favourably received and was given four further performances in Helsinki that spring. It is a melodically charming and harmonically nuanced miniature that betrays the influence of Tchaikovsky in its achingly tender tones. Later, Madetoja incorporated Elegia into his four-movement Sinfoninen sarja (Symphonic Suite, 1910), but even so it is better known as a separate number.

Austin Doub December 11, 2018 Senior Seminar Dr. Yang Abstract: This paper will explore Russian culture beginning in the mid nineteenth-century as the leading group of composers and musicians known as the Moguchaya Kuchka, or The Russian Five, sought to influence Russian culture and develop a pure school of Russian music. Comprised of César Cui, Aleksandr Borodin, Mily Balakirev, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolay Rimksy-Korsakov, this group of inspired musicians, steeped in Russian society, worked to remove outside cultural influences and create a uniquely Russian sound in their compositions. As their nation became saturated with French and German cultures and other outside musical influences, these musicians composed with the intent of eradicating ideologies outside of Russia. In particular, German music, under the influence of Richard Wagner, Robert Schumann, and Johannes Brahms, reflected the pan-Western-European style and revolutionized the genre of opera.

Elegance and lucidity, softness and sensibility are some of the outstanding qualities of Luigi Boccherini´s music. In his time he was one of the most loved composers in Europe, one of a few. His music was held in high esteem in Spain, France, the Netherlands and Belgium as well as in Scandinavia, Austria and in Germany. During the short period of 14 years, from 1783 to 1797, chamber music compositions by Boccherini were played frequently in Berlin and in Potsdam by the prince and heir Friedrich Wilhelm, who was a nephew of the late Friedrich II, “the Great” and a passionate cello player. He became King of Prussia after the death of his predessor on August 17th 1786. Already at the beginning of this year, on the 21st of January, Friedrich Wilhelm had appointed Boccherini to be his “compositore della nuestra camera”. From that time on Boccherini delivered about twelve new works of chamber music every year to the Prussian Court. Boccherini´s service was rewarded by 1000 Prussian crowns (Taler) yearly. A rival composer, Geminiani, had just taken Walsh to court for printing two sets of his Concerti which he claimed Walsh had acquired illegally. While there is no evidence that Handel objected to Walsh’s selection of his works as Opus 3, it looks as if he did not have a chance to edit them pre-publication; it is for instance odd that the last movement of this B flat concerto is in G Minor. The opening movement has solos for the oboes and a violin, the slow movement adds recorders over an orchestral texture with divided violas, and the final movement features bassoons towards the end: all giving London’s best instrumentalists a chance to shine. George Friderick Handel Two arias from the opera Rinaldo, HWV 7 ‘Augelletti, che cantate’ – ‘Lascia ch’io pianga’ Rinaldo is the first Italian opera Handel composed for London, opening in the Haymarket in February 1711. These two arias are sung by Almirena, the daughter of Godfrey of Bouillon, who is capturing the city of Jerusalem from the infidel during the First Crusade (1096–99). Almirena, a character unknown to Torquato Tasso, from whose epic the plot of the opera is drawn, has been introduced into the plot by the librettist to provide a love interest.
