MARIGOLD FESTIVAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS Michael Law, President Thea Ellenberg, Vice-President Emily Eisenman, Treasurer Mary Barrett Yancey, Secretary Jack Beach Daniel Collins Dodd Ferrelle David Matthews-Morgan Amanda Mooney James Neves WINTERVILLE MARIGOLD FESTIVAL 2019 3 Emily Eisenman is this year’s Grand Marshal This year we are celebrating the festival being “Ten Years Back”. This would not be possible without this year’s Grand Marshal, Emily Eisenman. When Emily moved to town she heard great community stories about the festival, the pride of Wintervillans and the history that this festival added to our little city. The festival began in 1971 but after a long run previous organizers had taken it as far as they could and the festival took a hiatus. In 2009 Emily found some renewed energy and brought the festival back and it has been growing ever since. In 2008, Emily attended every festival in the area, going as far away as Atlanta and Macon, to recruit vendors and get ideas, passing out hundreds of business cards. Some of those initial vendors have been in Pittard Park every year since. Emily remembers the first year back there was a rain shower in the Emily Eisenman late afternoon. The crowds just vanished and she was crestfallen. But the rain lifted as quickly as it had set in, and all of a sudden all the people reappeared. Not sure where everyone was hiding to stay out of the rain, but it was so neat that people stuck around! The festival has managed to remain true to its roots retaining “small town charm.” While the festival is strongly supported by the community it is not overly commercialized and that is something that is Emily is extremely proud of. Through changes and the boards efforts to create a sustainable festival it is still all about community. The proceeds from the festival go back into the community. The list of projects continues to grow but Emily is grateful that under her leadership the festival was able to help with the restoration of the Carter Coile Country Doctor’s Museum, now the festival is helping the city with the Auditorium restoration. Both are such gems to the county and through preservation will continue to create lasting memories in the city. The Miss Marigold Pageant is now back too and held in the Auditorium creating a real homecoming for all involved. Emily has made a big impact on our city since she moved to town. She was previously a city council member and was then elected Mayor of Winterville November 2011 to January 2016. Thank you Emily Eisenman for serving our city! We are proud to have you as the 2019 Marigold Festival Grand Marshal. A graduate of the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, she has been designing professionally since 2007. “Artful branding and design” is her slogan and it rings true for her in designing, as well as in her involvement with the music scene as an avid live painter, which she has been doing since 2012. Drawing inspiration from people and their passions is what makes art and design connect to a broad audience, which is how Camille tackles her design projects, as well as her evenings of live painting in venues all around the state. Staying true to that inspiration while working with the business owners, app developers, bands, and others that Camille works with, is the same thing that keeps her excited to start designing fresh each day. She believes the love of creation, design, and the excitement of finding new ways to plug into every aspect of life is what makes design life adventurous. Camille is excited to be part of the Winterville Marigold Festival again this year as the featured artist and is grateful for the opportunity to showcase her art in such a great community during this important and fun festival. On the side of the bookstore you will find Winterville’s latest mural. This mural celebrates the future Firefly Trail and is a student depiction of the possibilities that it will provide for our community. The creation of the mural was a collaborative process that included students, professional artists, and the Winterville Community. In the fall of 2018, Winterville Elementary art teacher, Carlin Brownlee, taught students about the Firefly Trail, its current progress in Athens, and the plans for its future as it makes its way through Winterville. Students were then led in a discussion about what the Firefly Trail will mean for our community and what they envision happening along the trail in Winterville. As they began drawing, they imagined a world beyond our own where they would ride their bikes, walk with their families, run with their friends, or see their teacher walking her dogs. They imagined there would be butterflies, swirly trees, and fairies dancing in front of the old train passing by the depot and headed for Pittard Park. Local artist and First Lady, Cameron Ferrelle, took these imaginative student drawings and brought their world to life by digitally collaging them together and then transferring these drawings onto the side of the Front Porch Bookstore. The mural took three weeks to complete and was a community effort as Wintervillians young and old stopped by to help Cameron paint. In- progress photos of the mural can be found on the Winterville Art Council’s Facebook and Instagram pages. Thanks to the City of Winterville, the Winterville Arts Council, the Front Porch Bookstore, and the Eastside Lowe’s for their contributions in making this mural possible.
