All articles are refereed, and are usually on the history of Catholicism in Canada or on topics having a connection with the Catholic Church in Canada. Historical Studies is published annually. Gendron, the author of Towards a Francophone Community: Canada’s Relations with France and French Africa, 1945-1968 (Montreal & Kingston: McGill- Queen’s University Press, 2006), is Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Dalhousie University. This summer he will begin his new appointment in the Department of History at Nipissing University. Hillary Kaell is from Ottawa, Ontario but feels most at home in Montreal, where she hopes to return at some point soon. Currently, she resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she is pursuing a doctorate in American Studies at Harvard University. This paper was written as part of the final project for her M.A. in history at the University of Toronto (2004-5). Richard Lebrun, who retired in 1998, is now Professor Emeritus in the Department of History at University of Manitoba. A specialist on eighteenth-century French intellectual history, his publications include numerous book reviews in various journals and on the H-Catholic and H-France lists, books and articles on Joseph de Maistre, and translations of Maistre’s writings. He was the editor of CCHA Historical Studies from 1998 to 2004. Michael Power is an independent scholar who lives and works in Welland, Ontario. He is a past president of the Canadian Catholic Historical Association and has contributed two articles to CCHA Historical Studies (1984 and 1989) and four obituaries to the CCHA Bulletin. His recent publications include A Promise Fulfilled: Highlights in the Political History of Catholic Separate Schools in Ontario (2002); The Road to Independence 1940-1953, volume VI of A Documentary History of Assumption College (2003), Jesuit in the Legislative Gallery: A Life of Father Carl Matthews, S.J. (2005); and five articles for volume XV of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography. His current project is a history of the diocese of London, Ontario, which is scheduled to appear in June 2007. Bill Ryan, a Canadian Jesuit, holds a doctorate from Harvard University and a licentiate in theology from College St Albert, Louvain. He was the founding director of the Center of Concern, Washington D.C. and has served as Jesuit provincial and also general secretary of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. His publications include Culture, Spirituality, and Economic Development: Opening a Dialogue (1995), and Globalization and Catholic Social Teaching – Present Impasse, Future Hope, co-edited with John Coleman sj (2005). — 4 — HHistoricalistorical SStudiestudies vvolol 7733 FFinal.4inal.4 4 22007-04-23007-04-23 116:14:156:14:15 CCHA Historical Studies, 73 (2007), 5 Editors’ Foreword We are pleased to present Volume 73 of Historical Studies, featuring papers presented at the 2006 annual meeting of the English Section of the Canadian Catholic Historical Association at York University, as well as papers submitted by scholars independently. Papers presented at the 2006 conference at York but not published here for various reasons (either papers given without a view to publication or not offered to the editors) are listed separately on page 6. Once again, all of the articles included in this edition of the journal have passed through a rigorous “double-blind” review process, meaning that they have been accepted on the recommendations of at least three assessors. We are indebted to all of the individuals whose cooperation in the writing, assessing and revising of these papers has made this edition of Historical Studies possible. The journal and the association continue to be grateful to Fr. Edward Jackman, O.P., Secretary General of the Canadian Catholic Historical Association and the Jackman Foundation for the generous support and encouragement that has made this, along with previous volumes, possible. This volume introduces two new additions to the journal’s format: a book review section offers select reviews addressing recent publications in the history of Canadian Catholicism; and, in an effort to streamline the submission and editing process for the journal, we have included submission guidelines for prospective authors.
