Dear Parishioners, This weekend, the Church celebrates Pentecost, one of the most important feast days of the year that concludes the Easter season and celebrates the beginning of the Church. Here’s what you need to know about the feast day: Pentecost always occurs 50 days after the death and resurrection of Jesus, and ten days after his ascension into heaven. Because Easter is a moveable feast without a fixed date, and Pentecost depends on the timing of Easter, Pentecost can fall anywhere between May 10 and June 13. The timing of these feasts is also where Catholics get the concept of the Novena - nine days of prayer - because in Acts 1, Mary and the Apostles prayed together “continuously” for nine days after the Ascension leading up to Pentecost. Traditionally, the Church prays the Novena to the Holy Spirit in the days before Pentecost. CLERGY The name of the day itself is derived from the Greek word "pentecoste," meaning 50th. In the Christian tradition, Pentecost is the celebration of the person of the Holy Spirit coming upon the Reverend Tadeusz Gorka, Pastor Apostles, Mary, and the first followers of Jesus, who were gathered together in the Upper Room. Reverend Frank Giuffre A “strong, driving” wind filled the room where they were gathered, and tongues of fire came to Weekend Assistant rest on their heads, allowing them to speak in different languages so that they could understand each other. It was such a strange phenomenon that some people thought the Christians were just drunk - but SACRED MUSIC Peter pointed out that it was only the morning, and that the phenomenon was caused by the Holy DIRECTOR OF SACRED Spirit. MUSIC The Holy Spirit also gave the apostles the other gifts and fruits necessary to fulfill the great commission - to go out and preach the Gospel to all nations. It fulfills the New Testament promise Mrs. Milena Urban, C.A.G.O. from Christ that the Apostles would be “clothed with power” before they would be sent out to spread [email protected] the Gospel. The main event of Pentecost takes place in Jerusalem. OFFICE STAFF It was right after Pentecost that Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, preached his first homily to Jews and other non-believers, in which he opened the scriptures of the Old Testament, showing how OFFICE MANAGER the prophet prophesied events and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Dolores Eichelberger For this reason, Pentecost is considered the birthday of the Church - Peter, the first , preaches [email protected] for the first time and converts thousands of new believers. The apostles and believers, for the first BUSINESS MANAGER time, were united by a common language, and a common zeal and purpose to go and preach the Mrs. Susan Ciabattoni Gospel. [email protected] Typically, priests will wear red vestments on Pentecost, symbolic of the burning fire of God’s love and the tongues of fire that descended on the apostles. However, in some parts of the world, Pentecost RELIGIOUS EDUCATION is also referred to as “Whit Sunday”, or “White Sunday”, referring to the white vestments that are Dr. Nicholas Scoville and typically worn. The white is symbolic of the dove of the Holy Spirit, and typical of the vestments that Jennifer Scoville catechumens desiring baptism wear on that day. religioused@ sacredheartroyersford.org Veni Sancte Spiritus! Father Tad Christine Klag Christine.Klag@ DECREE on the celebration of the Blessed Mary Mother of sacredheartroyersford.org the Church in the ------The joyous veneration given to the Mother of God by the contemporary Church, in HOLY CROSS REGIONAL light of reflection on the mystery of Christ and on his nature, cannot ignore the figure of a woman (cf. Gal 4:4), the Virgin Mary, who is both the Mother of Christ and CATHOLIC SCHOOL Mother of the Church. Mrs. Theresa Healy, Principal In some ways this was already present in the mind of the Church from the [email protected] premonitory words of Augustine and Saint Leo the Great. In fact the former 610-489-9434, ext. 2225 says that Mary is the mother of the members of Christ, because with charity she EUCHARISTIC cooperated in the rebirth of the faithful into the Church, while the latter says that the birth of the Head is also the birth of the body, thus indicating that Mary is at once Mother of Christ, the ADORATION Son of God, and mother of the members of his Mystical Body, which is the Church. These considerations Open from 12 Noon to 7:30 PM derive from the divine motherhood of Mary and from her intimate union in the work of the Redeemer, which culminated at the hour of the cross. THE HOLY SACRIFICE Indeed, the Mother standing beneath the cross (cf. Jn 19:25), accepted her Son’s testament of love and welcomed all people in the person of the beloved as sons and daughters to be reborn unto life OF THE MASS eternal. She thus became the tender Mother of the Church which Christ begot on the cross handing on the Mass will continue to be Spirit. Christ chose all disciples as ministers of his love towards his Mother, entrusting her to them so livestreamed from our Sacred that they might welcome her with filial affection. Acts 1:14). In this sense, in each Sunday at 9 AM, and on the course of the centuries, Christian piety has honoured Mary with various titles, in many ways equiva- lent, such as Mother of Disciples, of the Faithful, of Believers, of all those who are reborn in Christ; and Weekdays at 8 AM. also as “Mother of the Church” as is used in the texts of spiritual authors as well as in the Magisterium of SACRAMENT OF Benedict XIV and Leo XIII. Thus the foundation is clearly established by which Blessed Paul VI, on 21 November 1964, at the PENANCE conclusion of the Third Session of the Second Vatican Council, declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as Saturday at 4 PM “Mother of the Church, that is to say of all Christian people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call and by appointment by calling her the most loving Mother” and established that “the Mother of God should be further honoured and 610-948-5915. invoked by the entire Christian people by this tenderest of titles”. - Prefect Cardinal Robert Sarah and Secretary Archbishop Arthur Roche
