UA5 page 2 Acquisition Info.: This collection was transferred from the Athletic Department by the current director of athletics, Dr. Lorne J. Adams on January 22, 2007. ______________________________________________________________________________ History: In March of 1966, Arnie Lowenberger and Ed Mirynech met at a national conference on physical education. It was the meeting between these two that eventually brought Lowenberger to Brock University which spurred the beginning of the Athletics Department. When Lowenberger arrived at the University, he arrived with the intention of beginning an athletic department. One of the first changes he instituted, as Director of Physical Education and Athletics, was to make all of the Athletic clubs more official by applying for membership with the Ontario Intercollegiate Athletic Association (OIAA). The first teams to become part of the OIAA were cross-country, golf, curling, hockey and fencing. There were plans to have the Brock OIAA teams grow as well as to include women’s sports on campus. Brock's most successful sport was rowing. Not only was it the most successful, but it also had a large number of female members. The coach at the time, Tony Biernacki, wanted to get these women on the water, but had no equipment for them to use or borrow. With news of the Lachine Boat Club in Quebec closing its doors, Biernacki traveled there with enough money to bring back equipment for the first women's rowing team at Brock. This not only furthered teams at Brock, but women's athletics. After the initial start of these teams on a recognized level, Lowenberger spent the 1967-1968 season creating a program proposal for physical education, recreation and athletics. In the spring of 1968, Lowenberger had completed his plan and took the next step in making his proposal a reality. He appointed Bob Davis to oversee the inner workings of the Athletics Department and plan for its future. No longer having to oversee the Athletics Department, Lowenberger established a committee of physical educators from local high school boards. This board consisted of Nora Chatwin (Ministry of Education, Province of Ontario), Don McAuley (Director of Physical Education, Brock University, College of Education), Bob Davis and Lowenberger. The boards purpose was to develop a degree program in Physical Education at Brock, which they did and which was eventually approved in 1973. The program was a success with an initial enrollment of 297 students. Due to the foresight and team work of Lowenberger and Davis, Brock University still has a strong Athletics program today. 40 Years: Brock University Athletics p.20-21 ______________________________________________________________________________ UA5 page 3 Scope and Content: The fonds contains materials relating to the Brock University Athletics Department from the late 1960s to present. The materials included are reports, media releases, clippings, correspondence, memorabilia and photographs. Due to the large nature of this collection, duplicates were removed and discarded. Mounted team photographs were placed into a separate box, marked 'display'. If there was a duplicate of a mounted team photograph, it was placed within the regular collection; therefore if you cannot find the team picture you are looking for try the 'display' box. Materials have been arranged according to the folder titles in which they were received. Administrative records were arranged alphabetically and all photographs were arranged chronologically. Original order was retained for series II and III as they were already in chronological order. Negatives were placed with pictures whenever possible, otherwise they remained in the same chronological year as the photographs they came with. All negatives were counted by frame containing an image, not by row or blank frame. Photographs have been grouped by team and/or sporting event. Most photographs from the early years (1960s-1970s) are only men's sports teams, as women's teams were not yet developed. Legend: There are many abbreviations throughout the collection and within the finding aid. This list should aid you in determining what each of the acronyms stands for. A.A.U. Migration in globalized sport Finnish ice hockey players in Russia Alexandros Tarasanski Master’s Thesis Department of Sport Sciences Social Sciences of Sport University of Jyväskylä Spring 2016 1 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ Department of Sport Sciences/ Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences TARASANSKI, ALEXANDROS Migration in globalized sport. Finnish ice hockey players in Russia. Master’s thesis, 63 pages Social Sciences of sport ABSTRACT During the last five years the number of Finnish ice hockey players migrating to Russia has significantly increased. Despite this fact scarce research has been done in this field. Moreover, comparing to the progress that has been achieved in other areas of sociology of sport, much more work needs to be done, in sports transnational migration both at a theoretical and empirical level. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine how the migration period in Russia is perceived by Finnish professional ice hockey players by exploring and interpreting their personal experiences. More specifically, it is asked in this study for which reasons Finnish ice-hockey players migrate to Russia. Moreover, dimensions related to the adaptation process and how it affects the performance of the athletes among with the perceived by the players’ differences between the Finnish and Russian ice hockey cultures are examined. A qualitative phenomenological research method is applied in this thesis. This particular method fits well for the purpose of the study, because it allows to develop a composite description and interpretation of the essence of the experience of the professional Finnish ice hockey players who have migrated to Russia. The data is collected by semi-structured interviews of athletes who have played in Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) for Russian clubs.

INTRO: A LIFE SHAPED BY HOCKEY Dear international Ice Hockey family, dear friends, As far back as I can remember, I have always been totally hooked on Ice Hockey. This all-consuming love and passion for the sport has defined my purpose and continues to shape my life to this day. In fact, you could say that I was born with skates on my feet and never took them off. Our beautiful sport has given me self-belief, direction and focus – qualities that have guided me throughout my life as a professional National Team player, coach, manager, leader and President of a successful national hockey federation. For more than 23 years, I have been an active IIHF Committee Member and appointed to numerous IIHF Committees. I was elected to the IIHF Council by a large majority in 2016 and since then I have been IIHF Chairman at several international events, President of the newly implemented Team Europe for the 2016 NHL World Cup of Hockey and Vice President of the Champions Hockey League. As Chair of the IIHF Competition & Coordination Committee, together with my colleagues I managed and solved challenges including the international calendar, player release to national teams, player contract compensation and insurance for the IIHF Championship Programme and 2018 Olympic Games, the impact of COVID-19 on 2020 and 2021 IIHF events and many more. I was also part of the Council’s six-person team who successfully negotiated a fantastic new media and marketing partnership with Infront that will run until 2033, securing IIHF funds to support our Member National Associations (MNAs).

  • The Internationalization of Sports Clubs a Qualitative Study of Internationalization in the Sports Industry
The internationalization of sports clubs A qualitative study of internationalization in the sports industry Kiara Dettmer Department of Business Administration Master’s Program in Business Development and Internationalization Master´s Thesis in Business Administration III, 30 Credits, Spring 2020 Supervisor: Zsuzsanna Vincze [This page is intentionally left blank] II Abstract Globalization has opened up new markets. Companies have now endless opportunities to expand their business reach with sports clubs being no exception. Internationalization in sports has its beginnings with foreign players joining a team and changed in 1995 with the Bosman ruling. After the Bosman ruling, the transfer of international players became easier. Not only can one notice the internationalization of sports teams by the transfer of players but also by the expansion of the sports itself. The NFL plays home games in London, the NBA in Mexico City and FC Bayern Munich has opened subsidiaries in the US and China. Yet, this all seems like the whole sports industry is expanding. However, the influences behind this drive are unclear. The purpose of this thesis is to gain an understanding of internationalization in the sports industry. As the current literature indicates several gaps regarding the internationalization of sports clubs such as the limited view on one sport at the time or the data usage of clubs in their internationalization process, this thesis focuses on offering a broader picture. Therefore, the research question formulated for this thesis is: What influences the internationalization in the sports industry? For answering the research questions and fulfill the purpose of this thesis, an inductive approach was selected with a qualitative exploratory research study.
