Miro Subrt was associ- ated with the game for more than 60 years and 55 of these with the IIHF. He was the longest serving high-ranked official in international ice hockey. More information can be found on Page 17 The Goal Seen ‘Round the World: Tied at 0-0 and playing in overtime for the gold, Sweden’s Mika Zibanejad rushed down the right wing and cut past the Russian defence, firing a high backhand past goalie Andrei Makarov at 10:09 of the extra period to win the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship. The game was watched by over 600,000 in Sweden, who tuned in late at night to watch their country win its first U20 gold in 31 years. Photo: JC Pinheiro / HHOF-IIHF Images Tribute to the victims of the 2011 Yaroslavl plane crash September 7, 2011 was the darkest day in the history of hockey. Twenty-six players, three coaches and eight team officials from KHL club Lokomotiv Yaroslavl died in an air plane crash on their way to Minsk to play in their season opener. The commemoration of the tragedy began with huge memorials across Europe and continued throughout the season. Slo- vakia’s team captain Zdeno Chara concluded the season of mourning by paying tribute to his former teammate and friend Pavol Demitra after Slovakia won the silver medal at the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Helsinki.
