October 26, 2014 Album Review: The Blues Magoos: Psychedelic Resurrection Psychedelic Resurrection is the first album from garage rock band the Blues Magoos in four decades. The psychedelic sound of the late 1960s produced many bands with colorful names and one mainstream hit. The Vanilla Fudge, Electric Prunes, Bubble Puppy, Strawberry Alarm Clock, the Seeds (not a flashy name, but a major group in the genre), and the Blues Magoos. Hailing from the Bronx, the Blues Magoos formed in 1964 as the Trenchcoats, fusing garage rock with a hint of blues. Best known for their hit “(We Ain’t) Got Nothin’ Yet” and the electric suits they occasionally wore onstage, the band’s debut album Psychedelic Lollipop , released in November 1966, positioned the group as the East Coast’s representative in the psychedelic-music movement. The band had more of a stripped-down, proto-punk sound, but the psychedelic label stuck. Although “(We Ain’t) Got Nothin’ Yet” made it to #5 on the Billboard charts, a raunchy cover of John D. Loudermilk’s “Tobacco Road” was the album’s standout track. The Blues Magoos parted ways in 1972, but like many other long-dormant bands of that era, they've returned for another shot at the limelight. Three of the original members have reformed for a new album, Psychedelic Resurrection. The 12-song collection adds an infectious pop twist to the band’s late ‘60s sound. Many of the songs are revamped versions of tracks from the band’s two ‘60s releases. Electric Comic Book. There’s a new version of “Pipe Dream” from Electric Comic Book. -

Between 1963 and 1966 rock music took three decisive breaks from the original nature of rock'n'roll: Bob Dylan introduced an explicit socio-political message; British bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Who (the heirs to the "juvenile delinquent" image of the 1950s) indulged in instrumental and vocal mayhem; the Beach Boys, the Beatles and the Byrds focused on studio techniques and eccentric arrangements. Each of them embodied three different ways of using music as a vehicle: the profound bard, the street punk, the sound sculptor. The Rolling Stones and the Who personified an eternal and universal attribute of youth: rebellion. The Beach Boys and the Beatles were as removed as possible from their times (the Vietnam war, the civil-rights movement, the fear of the nuclear holocaust). Bob Dylan was all about his times. Dylan used music as a weapon, the Rolling Stones and the Who used it as an insult, while the Beach Boys and the Beatles were largely indifferent to the ideological turmoil. -

Sax and Doors producer/engineer Bruce Botnick went through a meticulous setup to guarantee a positively stunning reissue series. This is an all-tubes process. December 11, 2014 Psychedelic Resurrection: The Blues Magoos Interview, Part 1 Forty-six years after the release of their last psychedelic-flavored release, New York City-based rockers The Blues Magoos have returned with a new album, Psychedelic Resurrection. From its multicolored fractal cover art to its song titles (“D’Stinko Me Tummies on the Blinko”), it’s clear that the band’s original approach – slightly goofy lyrics paired with aggressive psychedelic melodies – remains largely intact. Prime-era Blues Magoos members Peppy Castro (vocals, guitar), Ralph Scala (lead vocals, keyboards) and drummer Geoff Daking return, and original members Ronnie Gilbert and Mike Esposito make cameo appearances on the disc. Psychedelic Resurrection is a mix of new songs and new versions of Blues Magoos classics, including the Top 5 smash single, “We Ain’t Got Nothin’ Yet.” Those early Blues Magoos albums were products of their time; the studio tracks have a distinctive mid-sixties vibe to them. The songs on the group’s new Psychedelic Resurrection album maintain some of that vibe, despite nearly everything having changed about recording music in the years between Electric Comic Book and 2014. Peppy Castro says that “it’s probably easier” to capture the band’s intended sounds now than in the old days. “Because, for example, in the old days, editing was a nightmare!” He laughs. “You had to get the razor blade out. But I love challenges – I love solving problems – so for me, the goal has always been ‘How close can I get to the warmth of analog?’ I’m one of those guys who, as the technology was advancing, didn’t want to be left behind the curve. -
