ON MY GRIND: FREESTYLE RAP PRACTICES IN EXPERIMENTAL CREATIVE WRITING AND COMPOSITION PEDAGOGY Evan Nave 312 Pages My work is always necessarily two-headed. Double-voiced. Call-and-response at once. Paranoid self-talk as dichotomous monologue to move the crowd. Part of this has to do with the deep cuts and scratches in my mind. Recorded and remixed across DNA double helixes. Structurally split. Generationally divided. A style and family history built on breaking down. Evidence of how ill I am. And then there’s the matter of skin. The material concerns of cultural cross-fertilization. Itching to plant seeds where the grass is always greener. Color collaborations and appropriations. Writing white/out with black art ink. Distinctions dangerously hidden behind backbeats or shamelessly displayed front and center for familiar-feeling consumption.

  • Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry
ROLL OF THUNDER HEAR MY CRY MILDRED D. TAYLOR NEWBERY MEDAL WINNER Author's Note My father was a master storyteller. He could tell a fine old story that made me hold my sides with rolling laughter and sent happy tears down my cheeks, or a story of stark reality that made me shiver and be grateful for my own warm, secure surroundings. He could tell stories of beauty and grace, stories of gentle dreams, and paint them as vividly as any picture with splashes of character and dialogue. His memory detailed every event of ten or forty years or more before, just as if it had happened yesterday. By the fireside in our northern home or in the South where I was born, I learned a history not then written in books but one passed from generation to generation on the steps of moonlit porches and beside dying fires in one-room houses, a history of great-grandparents and of slavery and of the days following slavery: of those who lived still not free, yet who would not let their spirits be enslaved. From my father the storyteller I learned to respect the past, to respect my own heritage and myself. From my father the man I learned even more, for he was endowed with a special grace that made him tower above other men. He was warm and steadfast, a man whose principles would not bend, and he had within him a rare strength that sustained not only my sister and me and all the family but all those who sought his advice and leaned upon his wisdom.

  • Greenbook 2020 Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant Project Descriptions and Results GREENBOOK 2020
Greenbook 2020 Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant project descriptions and results GREENBOOK 2020 On behalf of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), it is my great pleasure to introduce the 2020 edition of the annual Greenbook. As Commissioner of Agriculture, I’m proud to highlight the important work of the Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant Program, a component of the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Program. The projects presented here are great examples of the innovative ideas Minnesota farmers and researchers are exploring and testing to make farming in Minnesota more productive and sustainable, and I’ve been a long- time supporter of them. This year’s recipients were awarded a total of over $160,000 for forward-thinking initiatives that promote sustainability in agriculture. Much as I would love to, I can’t highlight every project here. But if you read further, you’ll see that from exploring non-chemical methods for controlling pests in strawberry and potato crops, to examining the effects of sheep grazing for controlling wild parsnip or increasing plant diversity in native pollinator habitat, to exploring new specialty crops, these projects are fundamental to the future of agriculture. The Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant Program is dedicated to improving and shaping the future; many previous grant projects have focused on practices that have become widely adopted, such as integrated pest management and cover cropping. In Greenbook 2020, you’ll learn about the successes and challenges an enthusiastic group of grantees have encountered while finding ways to increase energy and labor efficiency, reduce purchased inputs, and improve both the environment and farmers’ profitability.

THE SAME OLD BLUES CRAP: SELLING THE BLUES AT FAT POSSUM RECORDS A Thesis presented in partial fulfillment of requirements for the Master of Arts in Southern Studies The University of Mississippi JACQUI SAHAGIAN MAY 2018 Copyright © 2018 by Jacqui Sahagian All rights reserved ABSTRACT This thesis interrogates the marketing strategies of the Oxford, Mississippi-based record label Fat Possum, which was founded in the early 1990s by Matthew Johnson with the goal of recording obscure hill country blues artists. Fat Possum gained recognition for its raw-sounding recordings of bluesmen, including R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Cedell Davis, and T-Model Ford, as well as its irreverent marketing techniques. Adopting the tagline “not the same old blues crap,” Fat Possum asserted that its blues were both different from and superior to all other blues music. This thesis argues that while Fat Possum claimed to be a disruptive force in the blues world, the label actually repeated marketing strategies that have been used to sell the blues since the genre was first sold during the 1920s race records era.

  • Goat Marketing
Chapter One GOAT MARKETING Amanda Ziehl, Megan L. Bruch, Aaron C. Robinson and Rob W. Holland, Jr. _______________________________________________________________________ Introduction Oftentimes, producers raise their goats and think about marketing when the goats are ready to sell. Farmers may take their goats to the local auction barn, call someone who may be interested in purchasing meat goats or advertise in the newspaper that they have meat goats for sale. In these situations, the producer is merely selling his goats or goat meat and acting as a price-taker. Selling may be described as the transaction where the goat or goat meat is transferred from the producer to the consumer for a price. While this transaction is important, selling is only one component of a complete marketing scheme. In contrast, marketing is a proactive approach to producing and selling meat goats, allowing the producer to behave more like a price-maker. Marketing is the process of planning and executing the idea of a product, its price and the promotion and distribution of that product to satisfy the needs of the customer (Community Futures Development Corporation, 2005). Marketing of meat goats encompasses all of the operations and decisions made by the producer, which should be based on the needs and expectations of the end customer, from the breeding program and production methods to selling the live animal or meat to the consumer. This means marketing should not be an afterthought of production but should be planned well before production takes place and
