Linjer I Tom Waits' Sanglyrikk What’s he building in there? It’s a ventriloquist act, everybody does one.” Blant annet svarte han, under et intervju på The Late Show with David Letterman i 1986, på spørsmål om hvordan foreldrene hans var: ”My father was an exhaust manifold and my mother was a tree”.2 Barney Hoskyns, forfatter av den sist utgitte biografien, skriver: “The circumstances of Waits’ birth are shrouded in the mystery he prefers. Under duress he’ll concede that he was born ’at a very young age’ but remains cagey about the details beyond the actual date” (Hoskyns 2009:6). The Music and Myth of Tom Waits, 2000/2006) å fokusere hovedsakelig på den musikalske karrieren. I innledningen tar han forbehold: “I have to acknowledge right off the bat that many of the things described in the coming chapters quite possibly never happened – except in the mind of a compelling self-mythologizer” (Jacobs 2006:17). Neste plate, The Heart of Saturday Night, kom allerede året etter. Musikalsk er den laget over en lignende lest som Closing Time, men tekstene er jevnt 3 Cohen var manager for blant andre Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Tim Buckley, Captain Beefheart og Linda Ronstadt. 4 Elektra og Asylum var opprinnelig to plateselskaper, men ble slått sammen i 1972. 2 over mindre banale og mer interessante.

  • Woyzeck Bursts Onto the Ensemble Theatre Company Stage
MEDIA RELEASE CONTACT: Josh Gren [email protected] or 805.965.5400 x103 ELECTRIFYING TOM WAITS MUSICAL WOYZECK BURSTS ONTO THE ENSEMBLE THEATRE COMPANY STAGE March 25, 2015 – Santa Barbara, CA — The influential 19th Century play about a soldier fighting to retain his humanity has been transformed into a tender and carnivalesque musical by the legendary vocalist, Tom Waits. “If there’s one thing you can say about mankind,” the show begins, “there’s nothing kind about man.” The haunting opening phrase is the heart of the thrilling, bold, and contemporary English adaptation of Woyzeck – the classic German play, being presented at Ensemble Theatre Company this April. Inspired by the true story of a German soldier who was driven mad by army medical experiments and infidelity, Georg Büchner’s dynamic and influential 1837 poetic play was left unfinished after the untimely death of its author. In 2000, Waits and his wife and collaborator, Kathleen Brennan, resurrected the piece, wrote music for an avant-garde production in Denmark, and the resulting work became a Woyzeck musical and an album entitled “Blood Money.” “[The music] is flesh and bone, earthbound,” says Waits. “The songs are rooted in reality: jealousy, rage…I like a beautiful song that tells you terrible things. We all like bad news out of a pretty mouth.” Woyzeck runs at the New Vic Theater from April 16 – May 3 and opens Saturday, April 18. Jonathan Fox, who has served as ETC’s Executive Artistic Director since 2006, will direct the ambitious, wild, and long-awaited musical. “It’s one of the most unusual productions we’ve undertaken,” says Fox.

This special collection features new renditions of Tom Waits’ classic songs, and some under- the-radar favorites, sung by an acclaimed group of remarkable artists. The inherent beauty of Waits’ songwriting is brought to the forefront by these voices, each in their own special way. Portland trio Joseph offers a solemn take on “Come On Up To The House” followed by Aimee Mann’s warm, affecting version of “Hold On”. Phoebe Bridgers’ tenderness cuts deep on the heartbreaking “Georgia Lee”. Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer’s sibling harmonies shine brightly on “Ol’ 55”. Rosanne Cash elevates the poignant “Time” to new heights, while Iris Dement’s gentle vocals make “The House Where Nobody Lives” more fragile and vulnerable than the original recording. “Jersey Girl” gets a breezy, island treatment by Corinne Bailey Rae and “You Can Never Hold Back Spring” receives a lush, dreamlike makeover by Kat Edmonson.
