Neuer Buddhismus als gesellschaftlicher Entwurf, Zur Identitätskonstruktion der Dalits in Kanpur, Indien. Uppsala: Edita Västra Aros. 268 pages. 1 Neuer Buddhismus als gesellschaftlicher Entwurf collects some of the English and German writings of the late social anthropologist Maren Bellwinkel-Schempp (1948–2011).1 The articles included in this volume explore the historical process of community construction and identity formation among the Dalit (lower caste) communities of Kanpur, a large industrial town situated in the Northern Indian province of Uttar Pradesh. Taken together, these texts interweave three different threads. First, they present a history of the Dalit populations of Kanpur from the 19th to the 21st century, and skillfully ground the different processes of lower-caste assertion in their economic and political contexts.

  • Analysis of Cultural Landscape for Sustainable Tourism Development of Kanpur Region
Analysis of Cultural Landscape for Sustainable Tourism Development of Kanpur Region Ratnesh Shukla 1 & Kashif Imdad2 Abstract Kanpur city was well known as the “Manchester of the East” and is also known as a growing commercial and trade centre as well as an educational hub of Uttar Pradesh at present. The present paper is an attempt to explore the cultural heritage of an industrial town Kanpur and to ascertain probability of tourism development. To analyzed cultural landscape for sustainable tourism development of Kanpur region is particular objective of the present paper. The image of Kanpur projected today is a highly polluted and highly crowed city, a metropolitan that has almost lost all its beauty, leisure and glorious history. The Intensity of distracting factors of the city is the most effective than attracting factors of the city. The present study is based on field survey of culturally renowned sites of Kanpur city. Multistage random sampling technique was used for selecting 80 tourists from various tourists’ places of Kanpur region for determining attracting and distracting factors of the tourism of Kanpur region and secondary data was also used. When one enters the city, unbearable smell of leather and other industries welcomes. Unorganized slums and deplorable condition of Ganga speaks of its plight but it is not all. The poor road surface quality, dust and dirt speak volumes. It is challenging task for policy makers and town planners to establish Kanpur as a tourist centre which can come at par with cities like Agra, Varanasi etc, and attract maximum foreign and Indian tourists.

  • Pigs and Power: Urban Space and Urban Decay Maren Bellwinkel-Schempp (In: Hust, Evelin and Mann, Michael: Urbanization and Governance in India
Pigs and Power: Urban Space and Urban Decay Maren Bellwinkel-Schempp (in: Hust, Evelin and Mann, Michael: Urbanization and Governance in India. New Delhi, Manohar 2005, p.201-226.) Public Arenas and Public Space Mary Douglas started her fundamental insight into the study of purity and danger with the fairly blunt observation that dirt is substance in the wrong place. This chapter will deal with dirt as well but mainly with pigs on garbage heaps in the wrong place: that is in public. Mary Douglas’ second observation about dirt is more interesting. She claims that the things we abhor or detest develop a power over us. The fear of dirt or pollution has a transformative quality as it empowers the cultur- ally defined realm of man, animal or substance (Douglas 1966: 165). Starting point in time for the narrative of pigs and power was a visit to Kanpur after a time gap of nearly 20 years. Two things stunned me: The pigs on the garbage heaps along the roadside, even in the best localities, and a new and for me unknown Dalit assertiveness. The Dalit had gained a place in public, not only through numerous Dr Ambedkar statues, but also through public arena activities. What did it mean for Kan- pur, India’s first and oldest industrial town, the former ‘Manchester of the East’? Can one derive the one from the other? Is there a Dalit narrative on urban development or industrial decay? Or is there more than one narrative? In this chapter, I will try to show why the pigs in Kanpur multiplied and in what respect their ap- pearance is linked with Dalit assertion in Kanpur.

  • Economic and Political Weekly June 9, 2007 2177
Economic and Political Weekly June 9, 2007 2177 From Bhakti to Buddhism: Ravidas and Ambedkar Kanpur holds special importance for the dalit movement since it was the cradle of the Adi Hindu movement in Uttar Pradesh. This movement had a strong impact on dalits, especially in the years following Ambedkar’s conversion to Buddhism. This article examines how Ravidas became the most popular saint among the dalits in Kanpur and how the dalits accepted Buddhism in the 1980s. It also explains the emergence of Navayana Buddhism, which was conceptualised as the total rejection of Hinduism and was institutionalised with a temple and a Buddhist monk, a governing body of lay persons and a canon of public and private rites. MAREN BELLWINKEL-SCHEMPP Every year in January/February ‘jhankis’ (floats) are carried through the streets of many towns of Uttar Pradesh in honour of Sant Ravidas, a Bhakti saint of the 15th century. Not only that, special trains full of pilgrims start from Jalandhar in Punjab and go to Varanasi to celebrate the Ravidas ‘jayanti’ (birth anniversary) there at the temple in Seer Goberdhan with prayers, speeches, music and communal meals for which all the poor and needy of Varanasi are invited. Sant Ravidas, the humble chamar shoemaker of the 15th century, has become the most popular saint in northern India. He was so pious and god-loving that even mother Ganga herself came to his aid. Born in the city of Varanasi and pursuing a polluting occupation he had such a great spiritual acumen that he became the guru of princess Mirabai of Chittorgarh.1 Repeatedly he came in conflict with the brahmins but withstood all ploys and pursued his trade and his teachings.

Memory, History, and Colonialism German Historical Institute London Bulletin Supplement No. 1 GENERAL EDITOR: Andreas Gestrich Memory, History, and Colonialism Engaging with Pierre Nora in Colonial and Postcolonial Contexts EDITED BY INDRA SENGUPTA FOREWORD BY HAGEN SCHULZE GERMAN HISTORICAL INSTITUTE LONDON © German Historical Institute London, 2009 Published by the German Historical Institute London 17 Bloomsbury Square, London WC1A 2NJ, UK 2009 ISSN 0269-8552 GENERAL EDITOR’S FOREWORD This is the first volume in a new series of supplements to the German Historical Institute London Bulletin. Unlike the Bulletin itself, which contains articles and book reviews mainly on topics of German his- tory, the new supplement series will present the proceedings of con- ferences representing some of the Institute’s work on British and comparative European or colonial history. However, the series is also open to smaller monographs on these topics and to other forms of house publication. The supplements will appear at irregular inter- vals. I am very pleased to be able to open this new series within the family of GHIL publications with the proceedings of a conference which was held in summer 2006 as an academic farewell to my pred- ecessor as director of the German Historical Institute London, Professor Hagen Schulze. Hagen Schulze has worked extensively on Pierre Nora’s concept of sites of memory in the context of German history. This conference took the topic out of its well-established Euro pean framework and tested it in a wider colonial and postcolo- nial setting. I am grateful to Hagen Schulze and Indra Sengupta for editing a selection of papers given at this conference to produce this volume.

  • Nationalism, History, and Memorials in Nana Rao Park
THEIR THROATS WERE CONSTRICTED: NATIONALISM, HISTORY, AND MEMORIALS IN NANA RAO PARK by SARAH E. GRISWOLD MICHAEL J. ALTMAN, COMMITTEE CHAIR HILARY N. GREEN STEVEN RAMEY VAIA TOUNA A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Religious Studies in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2018 Copyright Sarah E. Griswold 2018 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT In the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Nana Rao Park in Kanpur is a microcosm for the history of India since 1857. The park exists as a space to be used for recreation, but it also houses a group of memorials that work to reinforce certain narratives. Today, the memorials tell the story of the 1857 Rebellion through the lens of Indian nationalism. Before Indian Independence in 1947, however, the park operated as a space to ideologically reinforce British imperialism. Each iteration of this park both reflects and perpetuates the dominant narrative at any given time. This thesis examines Nana Rao Park through those memorials and contemporaneous scholarship to show that narratives and the material output of those narratives are always politically driven. Whether to establish empire or fight for a national identity, Nana Rao Park is a space where these ideologies and narratives collide. ii DEDICATION This thesis is dedicated to my colleagues and friends in the Religion in Culture MA program – Sierra Lawson, Emma Gibson, and Matthew McCullough. Without their kindness and support, I would still be staring blankly at page one. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not exist but for the support of so many wonderful mentors, colleagues, and friends.

Some parts of Section I have been published in a different form in my article ‘Angel of Empire’ in the Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History, 8/3 (2007). I wish to thank Indra Sengupta for inviting me to the conference and for her excellent editorial assistance, the participants of the conference for stimulating feedback, Pamela Swett and Juanita De Barros for helpful comments, and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada for funding that allowed me to research this project.
