This document presents the results of the tests of a mechanism that can be used to prevent progressive and catastrophic collapse of steel structures in the event of a blast attack and elimination of one of the exterior columns. The concept that was tested and verified is proposed by the Skilling, Ward, Magnusson, Barkshire (SWMB), Structural and Civil Engineers, Seattle to be used in a new building. The concept consists of placing horizontal cables in the floors and on top of the top flange of the girders along the exterior column line. By using Catenary action of the cables, the load of the eliminated column can be transferred to the rest of the structure. The test specimen was full-scale representative of one floor of a typical steel building structure with its floor slab, steel deck, supporting beams, girders and columns. The specimen was designed by the SWMB and the test set-up was designed jointly by SWMB and UC-Berkeley engineers and researchers. The size of the specimen was 19'x60'x6'. The test plans consisted of constructing the specimen inside the UC-Berkeley, Civil Engineering laboratory in Davis Hall, adding instrumentation to the specimen, removing a middle column, pulling the bam-column joint of the removed column down, observing and collecting data on performance of the structure after removal of the column. A total of four tests were conducted which were 19.8-inch, 21-inch, 24-inch and 35-inch drop of column. The tests indicated that after removal of the column the Catenary action of the cable-supported floor was able to support 110 kips, 140 kips, 160 kips and 190 kips of column load respectively for 19, 21, 24 and 35 inches of drop of the column joint. These load values were based on using hydraulic actuator to apply the load. The corresponding gravity loads that could be applied to the column were 85, 108, 123 and 146 kips. 17. Key Words 18. Both of these values are unknown for this problem. Newton's method was used to approximate the scaling factor and the arc length function to determine the length of the cable. A script was written using the Python programming language in order to quickly perform several iterations of Newton's method to get a good approximation for the scaling factor.     Chapter 9 The Geometrical Calculus 1. At the beginning of the piece Erdmann entitled On the Universal Science or Philosophical Calculus, Leibniz, in the course of summing up his views on the importance of a good characteristic, indicates that algebra is not the true characteristic for geometry, and alludes to a “more profound analysis” that belongs to geometry alone, samples of which he claims to possess.1 What is this properly geometrical analysis, completely different from algebra? How can we represent geometrical facts directly, without the mediation of numbers? What, finally, are the samples of this new method that Leibniz has left us? The present chapter will attempt to answer these questions.2 An essay concerning this geometrical analysis is found attached to a letter to Huygens of 8 September 1679, which it accompanied. In this letter, Leibniz enumerates his various investigations of quadratures, the inverse method of tangents, the irrational roots of equations, and Diophantine arithmetical problems.3 He boasts of having perfected algebra with his discoveries—the principal of which was the infinitesimal calculus.4 He then adds: “But after all the progress I have made in these matters, I am no longer content with algebra, insofar as it gives neither the shortest nor the most elegant constructions in geometry. That is why... I think we still need another, properly geometrical linear analysis that will directly express for us situation, just as algebra expresses magnitude. If so, is there a simple “pre- established harmony” or linchpin between their respective ultimate foundations? The philosopher-mathematician, Gottfried Leibniz, who coined this phrase, believed that he had found that common foundation in calculus, a methodology he independently discovered along with Isaac Newton. But what is the source of the harmonic series of the natural log that is the basis of calculus and also Bernhard Riemann’s harmonic zeta function for prime numbers? On the occasion of the three-hundredth anniversary of Leibniz’s death and the one hundredth-fiftieth anniversary of the death of Bernhard Riemann, this essay is a tribute to Leibniz’s quest and questions in view of subsequent discoveries in mathematics and physics.

These abilities have been demonstrated in cultural heritage, especially traditional houses, which display evidence of an intuitive mathematics ability. Tribes around the world have built traditional houses with unique styles. The present study involved the collection of data from documentation, observation, and interview. The observations of several traditional buildings in Indonesia were based on camera images, aerial camera images, and documentation techniques. We first analyzed the images of some sample of the traditional houses in Indonesia using projective geometry and simple house theory and then formulated the definitions of building numbers and projective coordinates. The sample of the traditional houses is divided into two categories which are stilt houses and nonstilt house. The present article presents 7 types of simple houses, 21 building numbers, and 9 projective coordinates.

    A Survey of the Development of Geometry up to 1870∗ Eldar Straume Department of mathematical sciences Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) N-9471 Trondheim, Norway September 4, 2014 Abstract This is an expository treatise on the development of the classical ge- ometries, starting from the origins of Euclidean geometry a few centuries BC up to around 1870. At this time classical differential geometry came to an end, and the Riemannian geometric approach started to be developed. Moreover, the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry, about 40 years earlier, had just been demonstrated to be a ”true” geometry on the same footing as Euclidean geometry. These were radically new ideas, but henceforth the importance of the topic became gradually realized. As a consequence, the conventional attitude to the basic geometric questions, including the possible geometric structure of the physical space, was challenged, and foundational problems became an important issue during the following decades. Its instantaneous shape resembles that of a catenary, but evolves with time. At short times, the shape is dominated by bending deformations. At intermediate times, the effects of stretching become dominant everywhere except near the clamping boundaries where bending boundary layers persist. Finally, the filament breaks off in finite time via strain localization and pinch-off. 1. Introduction In 1690, Jacob Bernoulli issued the following challenge: determine the shape of a heavy filament or chain hanging between two points on the same horizontal line. Leibniz, Huygens and Johann Bernoulli independently discovered the equation for the shape of the catenary (derived from the Latin for chain), providing one of the first exact solutions of a nonlinear problem in continuum mechanics. Here we consider the fluid analogue of a catenary, shown in figure 1(a–f ). When a thin filament of an incompressible highly viscous fluid forms a bridge across the gap between two solid vertical walls, it will sag under the influence of gravity. After a very short initial transient when it falls quickly, it slows down in response to the resistance to extension.
