  • FIRST CENTURY AVANT-GARDE FILM RUTH NOVACZEK a Thesis
NEW VERNACULARS AND FEMININE ECRITURE; TWENTY- FIRST CENTURY AVANT-GARDE FILM RUTH NOVACZEK A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Westminster for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2015 Acknowledgements Thanks to Chris Kraus, Eileen Myles and Rachel Garfield for boosting my morale in times of great uncertainty. To my supervisors Michael Mazière and Rosie Thomas for rigorous critique and sound advice. To Jelena Stojkovic, Alisa Lebow and Basak Ertur for camaraderie and encouragement. To my father Alfred for support. To Lucy Harris and Sophie Mayer for excellent editorial consultancy. To Anya Lewin, Gillian Wylde, Cathy Gelbin, Mark Pringle and Helen Pritchard who helped a lot one way or another. And to all the filmmakers, writers, artists and poets who make this work what it is. Abstract New Vernaculars and Feminine Ecriture; Twenty First Century Avant-Garde Film. Ruth Novaczek This practice-based research project explores the parameters of – and aims to construct – a new film language for a feminine écriture within a twenty first century avant-garde practice. My two films, Radio and The New World, together with my contextualising thesis, ask how new vernaculars might construct subjectivity in the contemporary moment. Both films draw on classical and independent cinema to revisit the remix in a feminist context. Using appropriated and live-action footage the five short films that comprise Radio are collaged and subjective, representing an imagined world of short, chaptered ‘songs’ inside a radio set. The New World also uses both live-action and found footage to inscribe a feminist transnational world, in which the narrative is continuous and its trajectory bridges, rather than juxtaposes, the stories it tells.

Wood, enamel, paint, 91.1 x 141.9 cm. Private collection, London. © Robert Gober / Courtesy of Matthew Marks Gallery, New York. Queer studies and childhood studies have become increasingly intertwined over the last decade. Interest has been concentrated on the late nineteenth century as age of consent legislation coincided with the psychoanalytic investigation of childhood sexuality in the work of Sigmund Freud and others. The neglect of the study of childhood within the history of Surrealism is striking – despite André Breton’s assertion, in the first manifesto, that childhood memory was the easiest route into the marvelous. In works by artists and writers as diverse as Hans Bellmer and Dorothea Tanning, Toyen and Max Ernst, or Michel Leiris and Nelly Kaplan – the child is a focus point for a discussion of anxiety, sexuality and the formation of subjectivity itself. This conference will bring together a number of speakers to discuss the issue of childhood and sexuality within both surrealist works and practice that might be seen as part of its legacy. Many women artists developed and used dada and surrealist techniques, or contributed in multiple ways to the productions of the movements. These women’s works helped create some of the conditions of representation necessary for subsequent women’s rights activism, along with contemporary feminisms and women’s wider political interventions into structures of oppression. Evidence of this political activism can be found, for example, in the lives of Hannah Höch, Adrienne Monnier, Baroness Elsa von Freytag‐Lohringhoven, Madame Yevonde, Lee Miller, Frida Kahlo, Claude Cahun, Toyen, Suzanne Césaire, Lucie Thésée, and Birgit Jürgenssen.

The Unesco Eternal cinema Atimetolive... 26 India Living dangerously Danger is a way of life for film stunt men, the unsung heroes of the cinema. Jumping off roof¬ tops, falling off horses, crashing cars at high speed, day after day, film after film, they risk their lives to add vicarious excitement to the humdrum existence of the average cinema-goer. Above, a tense moment for two Indian stunt men during filming of the Second World War adven¬ ture film Lalkar. The Unesco Courier A window open on the world Editorial August 1984 37th year IT is a cruel paradox that the cinema, the most popular art of the twentieth century, should also be the most threatened. No art form has been (and continues to be) a prey to such destruction which, whether wilful or accidental, has caused losses on a massive scale. The disastrous implications of these losses for the memory of mankind are now fully appreciated. In this issue of the Unesco Courier, which is entirely devoted to the safeguard and preserva¬ tion of the world's film heritage, the two major causes of destruc¬ tion are analysed in detail. One stems from attitudes of mind to films and the cinema; the other has to do with the chemistry of motion picture film. The cultural value of the cinema was ignored and even denied for far too long, and the film was considered exclusively as a commer¬ cial commodity. In many countries huge quantities of film were thrown onto the scrap-heap, wantonly despoiled in ruthless and 4 The fragile art of film reckless waves of destruction unleashed whenever they seemed to be by Raymond Borde required by changing tastes and fashions in film and new technical developments.

In particular, it explicates Toyen’s construction of gender and eroticism within the contexts of early twentieth-century Czech feminism and sex reformism, the interwar Prague avant-garde, and Prague and Paris surrealism. Toyen’s interest in sexuality and eroticism, while unusual in its extent and expression, is intimately related to her historical and geographic position as an urban Czech forming her artistic personality during first a period of economic boom, avant-garde optimism, increased opportunities for women, and sex reformism, and then a period of economic crisis, restriction of women’s employment, social conservatism, and tension between the subconscious and the socialist realist.
