Mental and physical reactions come and go Like clouds in the empty sky; Greed, hatred, and ignorance appear and disappear Like bubbles on the surface of the sea. When we realize actuality, There is no distinction between mind and thing And the path to hell instantly vanishes. If this is a lie to fool the world, My tongue may be cut out forever. He who recites poems at his death Adds frost to snow. --- Mumon Genshen, d. 1390 Scott Eberle's book, The Final Crossing, has an intriguing subtitle: "Learning to Die In Order to Live." Last week, he and Meredith Little shared their 4-step rite of passage (as taught at Meredith's School of Lost Borders and derived from native American traditions) for those on the cusp of death: 1. Decision Road, when you become conscious of the fact that your time to die is close at hand, and begins to muster the strength to accept and embrace that fact; 2. Death Lodge, where the focus is on "completing" your relationships with the living: to forgive and be forgiven, to express thanks and love, and to say goodbye; 3. Purpose Circle, a period of deep introspection, of "ruthless self-honesty without judgement" in which the goal is to make peace with yourself and your life, to realize a sense of integrity rather than despair; and 4. Stepping Into The Ballcourt, which is an in-between-worlds transitional phase where one is completely open to and ready for the "final crossing" to arise (or however we choose to imagine death). This parallels the spiritual process which many Buddhist meditators seek to undergo, as Scott laid out: 1. Setting the intention of your practice, especially through making vows; 2. Learning to let go of your attachments and unresolved conflicts; 3. -

CHANT In many cultures, chant is used to heighten the delivery of text in religious or ritual contexts. The musical delivery is often received as a more spiritual means of expression than the spoken word. In most cases, chant is exclusively a vocal repertoire (without instrumental accompaniment), and usually consists of a single (‘monophonic’) melody line. Although chant presents many of the attributes associated with secular musical performance—out of context, chant may sound like song—it is often not classed as ‘music’ itself: its purpose is not primarily to provide enjoyment to its listeners, but rather to add weight or ceremony to the (often sacred) words that chant accompanies, and/or to facilitate comprehension or recollection of the ritual. As such, chant is functional, reserved for use in certain ritual activities. The remainder of this entry examines a small selection of the world’s chant traditions, placing them in their historical and cultural contexts, in order to provide insight into some of the various forms and practices in which chant is used. Gregorian chant The most widespread form of plainchant in the Latin Christian West, both in the middle ages and today, is ‘Gregorian’ chant; other medieval repertories included Old Hispanic (see below), Gallican, Old Roman, Beneventan and Ambrosian chant. The name ‘Gregorian’ is misleading and stems from the once-held belief that the repertory was composed by Pope Gregory I (590-604). It is now widely accepted that ‘Gregorian’ chant cannot be traced back to Gregory I (sources contemporary to the pope provide no evidence for his involvement in composing chant or arranging the liturgy—‘liturgy’ being the regular, formal, communal acts of worship, rather than private devotion), but instead emerged in the eighth century in the Carolingian empire. -

Buddhist Music Review, 1998
Buddhism's twentyfive hundred year history has found this tradition living in the heart of many Eastern cultures in how these cultures express wisdom and compassion through chant and instrumental interpretations. With the increasing interest in the philosophy and practice of Buddhism in the West, this important collection of Buddhist chants and music opens a whole new horizon for practitioners and students of this tradition. In this collection, we can hear the humid sounds of Vietnam in the chanting of teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. And we also touch the robust strength of Korea's rugged mountains in the chanting of Zen Master Seung Sahn. The Tendai chants remind us of the Gregorian tradition where there is an absence of harmony and a presence of the community in unison. The haunting sound of the shakuhachi reminds us of the stark and beautiful simplicity of Japanese Zen practice. Included also are chants and instrumentals by Buddhist practitioners from Sri Lanka, Tibet, and China. In this way, we have here a wealth of Buddhist chant and music that reflects the profoundly rich cultural interpretations of a vision and practice that arose in India over two millenia ago. Interestingly enough, music is an integral part of Buddhist practice. I know of no school of Buddhism that does not include music as an integral element of the tradition. However, this is not music as we know it. Buddhist chant and percussion practice in particular is created for the purpose of inducing meditative states of consciousness. Obviously from this collection, we see that we are talking about differing states of meditation, from the rich visualization-based practices of meditation of the Tibetans who use overtone chanting and resounding symbols, horns, and drums, to the gentle and rather sweetish tones of Vietnamese Buddhism where lovingkindness is emphasized. -

THIS BUDDHIST LIFE Oshin Liam Jennings AGE 32 PROFESSION Zen priest / art therapist / artist LOCATION New York, NY How has being deaf shaped your experience of receiving and trans- mitting the dharma? I have to say first that it was an obstacle. Zen is very intimate—the transmission of the dharma hinges on discipleship. We gain access to our teacher’s mind through one-on-one transmission and exposure. I have had to rely on other forms of communication, and that affects the psychological dynamics of the teacher-disciple relationship. And being the only deaf person in the zendo has often been a very “other- ing” feeling. About a year and a half ago, I started the No Barriers Zen Temple in Washington, D.C., with the inten- tion to work more intelligently with communities of differently abled people. It’s not a deaf-only space, but many members of the D.C. deaf com- munity join us, and we organize our services to accommodate them. What I’m aiming for with the center is a paradigm shift: when people from the general D.C. community come, I have to tell them that I need to get them a sign language interpreter. And they say, “Oh, no, no, I can hear.” And I say, “Right, but you can’t sign, so we’re going to need to get you a sign language interpreter.” They don’t get it! It takes a while for them to make the shift of “Oh, I need an interpreter because I’m functioning in a different space.” I’m not immune to those kinds of assumptions as a deaf person, by the Adler Bess by Photograph 24 TRICYCLE WINTER 2016 THIS BUDDHIST LIFE way. -

“Zen Has No Morals!” - The Latent Potential for Corruption and Abuse in Zen Buddhism, as Exemplified by Two Recent Cases by Christopher Hamacher Paper presented on 7 July 2012 at the International Cultic Studies Association's annual conference in Montreal, Canada. Christopher Hamacher graduated in law from the Université de Montréal in 1994. He has practiced Zen Buddhism in Japan, America and Europe since 1999 and run his own Zen meditation group since 2006. He currently works as a legal translator in Munich, Germany. INTRODUCTION Zen Buddhism was long considered by many practitioners to be immune from the scandals that occasionally affect other religious sects. Zen’s iconoclastic approach, based solely on the individual’s own meditation experience, was seen as a healthy counterpoint to the more theistic and moralistic world-views, whose leading proponents often privately flouted the very moral codes that they preached. The unspoken assumption in Zen has always been that the meditation alone naturally freed the accomplished practitioner from life's moral quandaries, without the need for rigid rules of conduct imposed from above. -
Zen War Stories
ZEN WAR STORIES Following the critically acclaimed Zen at War (1997), Brian Daizen Victoria here explores the intimate relationship between Japanese institutional Buddhism and militarism during the Second World War. Victoria reveals for the first time, through examination of the wartime writings of the Japanese military itself, that the Zen school’s view of life and death was deliberately incorporated into the military’s programme of ‘spiritual education’ in order to develop a fanatical military spirit in both soldiers and civilians. Furthermore, it is shown that D. T. Suzuki, the most famous exponent of Zen in the West, was a wartime proponent of this Zen-inspired viewpoint which enabled Japanese soldiers to leave for the battlefield already resigned to death. Victoria takes us on to the naval battlefield in the company of warrior-monk and Rinzai Zen Master Nakajima Genjō. We view the war in China through the eyes of a Buddhist military chaplain. The book also examines the relationship to Buddhism of Japan’s seven class-A war criminals, hung by the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal in 1948. A highly controversial study, this book will be of interest not only to those studying the history of the period, but also to anyone concerned with the perennial question of the ‘proper’ relationship between religion and state.
