Alki Beach is a large strip of sandy beach bordered by a flat bike and pedestrian trail path—people who use this trail are treated to the most amazing views of the Seattle skyline, Puget Sound, and Olympic mountains. The Junction, considered the heart of downtown West Seattle, is the site of the year-round West Seattle Farmers Market. Its where West Seattleites connect. Visitors to West Seattle will find easy access to waterfront trails, sandy beaches, fishing piers, restaurants, and a variety of shops along the California Avenue corridor. It's a great spot for walk any time of year—and in the summer it draws joggers, roller bladers, volleyball players, beachcombers, sunbathers, bicyclists and strollers out to enjoy the sun. The wide path is inviting and there's plenty of parking along Alki Avenue SW. There are picnic tables, a bathhouse housing an art studio, and a restroom at the south (Alki Point) end of the beach. The north end of the beach is protected by a bulkhead, and flanked by cottages. The whole beach offers spectacular views of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains, and the flotilla of ferries, sailboats, steamships and other craft that ply Puget Sound waters WEST SEATTLE activities West Seattle Summer Fest is host to dozens of bands, hundreds of merchants and artists, and over 30,000 attendees. Complete with a food court, beer gardens and family activities, this is a true community celebration in the heart of West Seattle. For three days, merchants open up their doors and spill out onto their sidewalks to display all the wonderful products and services they offer year- round, while artists and artisans display in the streets. West Seattle Farmer’s Market is one of Seattle’s few year-round markets, giving residents access to local foods, treats, flowers, produce and more all year long! They are open from 10am to 2pm every Sunday, rain, pouring down rain or sunshine! They have special events every Sunday. SEATTLE parks & recreation Our natural climate allows for year-round outdoor recreation, while our proximity to the Olympic and Cascade Mountain Ranges and the waters of the Puget Sound and Pacific Ocean offers a plethora of opportunity for walking, hiking, running, mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding, water sports, boating, and anything else you can dream of. As such, our local parks are redesigned for a variety of recreation, and combine our natural landscape with local fascination. The Burke-Gilman Trail runs 27-miles through Seattle, Lake Shore, and the Eastern Railway corridor. Additionally, the Washington Park Arboretum and Seattle Japanese Gardens are a beautiful addition to the Union Bay border. Fostered by the University of Washington’s botany department, the gardens consist of spectacular plants, intersecting form with natural beauty. Its main access to Seattle is via the West Seattle Bridge. Many neighborhoods have their own mini- downtown regions only a few short blocks from home. The King County Metro, Sound Transit busses, and Sound Transit’s light rail system run through the center, as well as neighborhood-specific systems, such as the South Lake Union rail, the famous monorail connecting downtown and Seattle center, water taxi services, and an integrated ferry system.
