Clark Degree Date: June 2010 Abstract In 1942, approximately 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry were evacuated from the West Coast to ten different internment camps in the interior of the United States. One of these camps was the Granada Relocation Center, otherwise known as Amache, located in southeastern Colorado. Through the analysis of archaeological material, archival documents, and oral histories, this thesis explores the experiences of Japanese American women interned at Amache. Feminine identity was greatly changed and redefined during confinement. These changes in feminine identity are examined in the public and private arenas of daily life within confinement. The construction of new and altered individual and community identities are also explored. By examining how feminine identity was both changed as well as maintained during confinement, many differences between generations of Japanese women are exposed. Commonalities and similarities are also revealed that ultimately highlight the great adaptability, resilience, and perseverance of Japanese women in confinement. ii Acknowledgements The completion of this project was made possible by the invaluable participation and contributions of countless individuals, organizations, and communities. An initial thank you goes to the pioneers of internment archaeology whose previous archaeological work at Amache and other internment camps informed the research design and provided insights into internment concepts and themes, creating a strong foundation from which to begin my own research process. The Amache Preservation Society and their tireless leader, John Hopper, deserve many thanks not only for their assistance in this project but for the excellent work they have done and continue to do towards the preservation and conservation of Amache. The Town of Granada has also played an instrumental role in the care of the site and was a more than gracious host during the Amache field school. The residents and the community leaders of Granada have a wonderful sense of hospitality as well as an inspiring amount of involvement and interest in Amache. Many thanks to the participants and volunteers in the field school whose physical strength and heat tolerance made it possible to collect an outstanding amount of data. Special thanks to volunteer and former internee, Gary Ono, whose eagerness and willingness to participate was inspiring to the whole crew. His presence at the field school helped personalize the research process, provided a valuable perspective, and reminded us of whose story we sought to tell. The support of the Japanese American community has also been a significant component of my research. Active local Japanese American organizations like the Mile- hi JACL chapter and the Japan America Society of Southern Colorado have shown support for the research endeavors of the DU Amache Project by collaborating and promoting community events. The community of former Amache internees has also played an important role in my research process. Internment in Hawaii was far more severe than it was in Arkansas. This claim is supported by both primary sources, derived mainly from oral interviews, and secondary sources made up of scholarly research that has been conducted on the topic since the events of Japanese American internment occurred.

    CHAPTER 8 MANZANAR Introduction The Manzanar Relocation Center, initially referred to as the “Owens Valley Reception Center”, was located at about 36oo44' N latitude and 118 09'W longitude, and at about 3,900 feet elevation in east-central California’s Inyo County (Figure 8.1). Independence lay about six miles north and Lone Pine approximately ten miles south along U.S. highway 395. Los Angeles is about 225 miles to the south and Las Vegas approximately 230 miles to the southeast. The relocation center was named after Manzanar, a turn-of-the-century fruit town at the site that disappeared after the City of Los Angeles purchased its land and water. The Los Angeles Aqueduct lies about a mile to the east. The Works Progress Administration (1939, p. 517-518), on the eve of World War II, described this area as: This section of US 395 penetrates a land of contrasts–cool crests and burning lowlands, fertile agricultural regions and untamed deserts. It is a land where Indians made a last stand against the invading white man, where bandits sought refuge from early vigilante retribution; a land of fortunes–past and present–in gold, silver, tungsten, marble, soda, and borax; and a land esteemed by sportsmen because of scores of lakes and streams abounding with trout and forests alive with game. The highway follows the irregular base of the towering Sierra Nevada, past the highest peak in any of the States–Mount Whitney–at the western approach to Death Valley, the Nation’s lowest, and hottest, area. The following pages address: 1) the physical and human setting in which Manzanar was located; 2) why east central California was selected for a relocation center; 3) the structural layout of Manzanar; 4) the origins of Manzanar’s evacuees; 5) how Manzanar’s evacuees interacted with the physical and human environments of east central California; 6) relocation patterns of Manzanar’s evacuees; 7) the fate of Manzanar after closing; and 8) the impact of Manzanar on east central California some 60 years after closing.

    one · Gender and the Problem of Prehistory IMAGINING PREHISTORY To examine the contested issue of gender in ancient Near Eastern prehistory, I be- gin with a definition of the period. Prehistory is the time before the invention of writing (which took place around 3500 bce in the ancient Near East). This period is divided into several major eras of human development in eastern Europe and the ancient Near East: late Paleolithic (c. 30,000–9000 bce), proto-Neolithic and Neo- lithic (c. 9000–5600 bce), and Calcolithic (5600–3500 bce). In the European late Paleolithic, we begin to have some evidence of human creative consciousness in the form of cave paintings, figurines, and tools decorated with designs or with figures of animals or humans. The Neolithic is divided from the Paleolithic by the move- ment from food gathering (hunting and collecting fruits, nuts, and plants) to food growing and domestication of animals. The Calcolithic describes a time of more developed agriculture (including the use of the plow and irrigation) as well as trade and early urbanization. The Neolithic revolution took place gradually in the ancient Near East between 9000 and 7000 bce. At first, herds of wild animals or areas of wild grains were cor- doned oª and controlled by more settled human groups; later, with full domestica- tion, animals were bred for food, milk, or skins, and seeds were conserved for plant- ing grains. These innovations developed along parallel lines in several places in the ancient Near East and spread to other nearby areas. There was not a uniform, straightforward pattern of development.

    Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen: Theory and Practice, Aesthetics and Politics, 1963-1983 Nicolas Helm-Grovas Royal Holloway, University of London PhD, Media Arts 1 Declaration of Authorship I, Nicolas Helm-Grovas, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. 15 January, 2018 2 Abstract This PhD is a genealogy and critical examination of the writings and films of Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen, spanning the period from the early 1960s to 1980s. Despite the prominence of their texts, there has not been a book-length study of either body of writing, nor an overview of their overlap and mutual influence, in what was their most productive period. Nor has there been an extended account of the important connection between their theory and their practice as filmmakers. My thesis undertakes these tasks. I interpret and challenge existing scholarship, while simultaneously examining in detail for the first time lesser-known works, drawing on archives and interviews. Through close readings I elucidate Mulvey’s interrogation of the patriarchal fantasies structuring cinematic and artistic forms and her feminist appropriation of classical Hollywood melodrama; I map the related issues Wollen’s texts activate, of cinematic signification and materialism, the buried potentialities of the historical avant-gardes, and their connection to the avant-garde film contemporaneous with his writings. Their moving image works, I demonstrate through detailed analyses, bring these ideas into dialogue and work them through in a more open, exploratory vein. I trace key notions like ‘counter cinema’ across films and writings by both authors.

    FEMINISM AND GREEK ARCHAEOLOGY: AN ENCOUNTER LONG OVER-DUE* Archaeology, feminism, and innovation The second wave of feminism in the 1970s had an important impact on the academic community in North America and Western Europe, resulting in new research avenues and more professional opportunities for women. Archaeology was, however, late to embrace feminist interests. This reluctance can be explained in terms of the following developments: • dominance of processualism in anthropological archaeology, since the 1960s, which promoted normative explanations of human behaviour as a mere reflection of environmental adaptation and socio-economic structure1 • a strong historical-philological tradition in classical archaeology, which often placed uncritical faith on textual evidence without considering the prejudices of ancient writers2 • under-representation of women in the profession, especially in the higher ranks.3 Since the 1980s, many archaeologists became dissatisfied with the ways the past was portrayed in previous approaches. A broader intellectual climate of critical awareness has favoured the development of post-processual archaeologies which shifted emphasis to human agency and historical contingency; acknowledged archaeology’s relations to political authority and the impact of modern experience on scholarly constructs about the past; exposed the ways in which the past is perceived differentially by individuals and/or social groups; and recognised the needs and experiences of the recipients of archaeological knowledge, who may eventually also become producers of new interpretations. Shaking the previous confidence in “testable objectivity,” these new perspectives strive to understand the culturally- specific manifestations of identity and “otherness,” and explore new possibilities of rethinking about the past and present. A growing validation of pluralism has encouraged feminist responsiveness in archaeology in many international contexts (USA, Britain, Norway, Germany, Spain, Australia, and elsewhere).

The basic tenets of this theory are centred upon the notion that within these ancient societies women and men lived as relative equals in virtually all aspects of daily life. Moreover, women were often accorded esteemed status due to their reproductive capabilities; indeed, the identity of women as life-givers was closely tied to the life-giving goddess who served as the focal point of Old European religion. Although this “matrifocal” model for Old European society has its share of supporters and proponents, the individual most responsible for its formulation and subsequent dissemination was the renowned and highly accomplished Lithuanian archaeologist Marija Gimbutas. Gimbutas incorporated her extensive knowledge of prehistoric Eastern European folklore and burial rites, the symbolic nature of the multitude of artifacts accrued from her Eastern European excavations, and her fluency in a number of different languages (including those of Eastern European origin) in order to develop the matrifocal model.
