Employing textual analysis of twenty-six novels published from 1995-2005, by romance publishers such as Harlequin, Silhouette, and Genesis Press, and situating them as category romance novels targeted towards a black female audience and written by black female authors, this study argues that these novels constitute a new subgenre, and that the conventions and themes that are common to these novels conceptualize racial difference as the most salient issue in the depiction of interracial romantic relationships, while simultaneously arguing that romantic love is fundamentally apolitical. This study is an exploration of the generic conventions of this emerging subgenre, explaining the common approaches to four specific issues in the novels: the need to delineate racial categories and the reliance on essentialist understandings of race; the use of a reluctant, independent heroine and an idealistic hero, which corresponds to both the trend towards softer masculinity in the media during the time period in which these novels were -

Since China started the economic reform in 1978, there have been more and more Chinese students and academics going abroad to seek for better places and the number of them is in the millions. As the majority of them do never return to China, while the country is suffering from a severe skilled labour shortage, the Chinese government and businesses, both local one and multinationals, have implemented a series of encouraging acts towards overseas Chinese. In 2007, when the Chinese government first launched “the One Thousand Talent Plan”, the difference between how many people leave and how many return has showed a big change towards what Chinese leaders have expected. By applying comprehensive strategies taken from talent management theories, China has welcomed a fresh force of skilled labour in many fields, particularly in science and technology. Beijing launched a plan to reform the Chinese education system, through ways such as popularising education to rural areas, building numerous universities and luring the most prominent experts in the world, methods that are understood as talent development. -

Mark Sawyer, University of Western Australia Call-and-Response: Group Formation and Agency enacted through an Architectural Magazine, its Letters and Editorials Current scholarship is increasingly focusing on the productive alliances and relationships arising between late twentieth-century architects and theorists. As independent architectural periodicals are mined one-by-one for their historical value and used to narrate the permutations of the still recent past, the ‘little magazine’ is being broadly characterised as a node around which avant-garde groups have consolidated their identities and agendas. What is missing from current scholarship is an adequate explanation of the type of agency exhibited by architectural groups and the role that architectural publishing plays in enacting this agency. This paper is an investigation into the mechanics of architectural group formation and agency considering some important mechanisms by which groups, alliances, and their publications have participated in the development of an architectural culture. This paper investigates the relationships that developed between a number of interrelated groups emerging out of Melbourne’s architectural milieu in the final decades of the twentieth century. -

In Xinjiang the international lingua franca English, the national official language Mandarin Chinese, and major Turkic languages such as Uyghur and Kazakh interact and compete for linguistic prestige in different social scenarios. The power relations between the Turkic languages, including the Uyghur language, and Mandarin Chinese is one in which minority languages are surrounded by a dominant state language supported through various institutions such as school and mass media. The much greater symbolic capital that the “legitimate language” Mandarin Chinese carries enables its native speakers to have easier access than the native Turkic speakers to jobs in the labor market. Therefore, many Uyghur parents face the dilemma of choosing between maintaining their cultural and linguistic identity and making their children more socioeconomically mobile. The entry of the global language English and the recent capitalist development in China has led to English education becoming market-oriented and commodified, which has further complicated the linguistic picture in Xinjiang. -
Strategies for Sexual Subversion: Informing the Future of Sexualities Research and Activism
STRATEGIES FOR SEXUAL SUBVERSION: INFORMING THE FUTURE OF SEXUALITIES RESEARCH AND ACTIVISM ANDREA P. HERRERA University of Oregon Abstract In this paper, I review, analyze, and evaluate the myriad ways early canonical and more recent high-profile scholarship in the field of sexualities envision a liberatory sexual politics and the most fruitful modes of achieving it. Due to theorists’ diverging interpretations of the causes and forms of sexual oppression as well as their differing visions of liberated sexuality, I find that prescriptions for dismantling the “ethnosexual regime” (Nagel 2000) vary widely. The strategies suggested by scholars can be categorized into: 1) radical lesbian-feminist separatism, 2) identity politics, 3) the redeployment of gender, which encompasses trans and intersex bodies, gender play (e.g., butch-femme, drag, and shifting constructions of masculinity), and non-binary identities, 4) micro-level individual and interpersonal solutions, 5) changes in educational institutions, and 6) sexualities research itself. I conclude by making suggestions for sociologists who seek to further theorize and effect the subversion of normative systems of sexuality. Introduction Implicit in much sexualities research is the belief that another world is possible, one free from sexual regulation, oppression, persecution, and violence. While nearly all scholars of sexualities identify problems in the contemporary social organization of sexuality, they differ in their estimations of the causes and solutions to these issues. Global Cinema
GLOBAL CINEMA Edited by Katarzyna Marciniak, Anikó Imre, and Áine O’Healy The Global Cinema series publishes innovative scholarship on the transnational themes, industries, economies, and aesthetic elements that increasingly connect cinemas around the world. It promotes theoretically transformative and politi- cally challenging projects that rethink film studies from cross-cultural, comparative perspectives, bringing into focus forms of cinematic production that resist nation- alist or hegemonic frameworks. Rather than aiming at comprehensive geographical coverage, it foregrounds transnational interconnections in the production, dis- tribution, exhibition, study, and teaching of film. Dedicated to global aspects of cinema, this pioneering series combines original perspectives and new method- ological paths with accessibility and coverage. Both “global” and “cinema” remain open to a range of approaches and interpretations, new and traditional. Books pub- lished in the series sustain a specific concern with the medium of cinema but do not defensively protect the boundaries of film studies, recognizing that film exists in a converging media environment. one · Gender and the Problem of Prehistory IMAGINING PREHISTORY To examine the contested issue of gender in ancient Near Eastern prehistory, I be- gin with a definition of the period. Prehistory is the time before the invention of writing (which took place around 3500 bce in the ancient Near East). This period is divided into several major eras of human development in eastern Europe and the ancient Near East: late Paleolithic (c. 30,000–9000 bce), proto-Neolithic and Neo- lithic (c. 9000–5600 bce), and Calcolithic (5600–3500 bce). In the European late Paleolithic, we begin to have some evidence of human creative consciousness in the form of cave paintings, figurines, and tools decorated with designs or with figures of animals or humans. The Neolithic is divided from the Paleolithic by the move- ment from food gathering (hunting and collecting fruits, nuts, and plants) to food growing and domestication of animals. The Calcolithic describes a time of more developed agriculture (including the use of the plow and irrigation) as well as trade and early urbanization. The Neolithic revolution took place gradually in the ancient Near East between 9000 and 7000 bce. At first, herds of wild animals or areas of wild grains were cor- doned oª and controlled by more settled human groups; later, with full domestica- tion, animals were bred for food, milk, or skins, and seeds were conserved for plant- ing grains. These innovations developed along parallel lines in several places in the ancient Near East and spread to other nearby areas. There was not a uniform, straightforward pattern of development. -

THE MARGINALITY OF THE AMERICAN LEFT: THE LEGACY OF THE 1960s Barbara Epstein By virtually any definition of the term, the US left is not doing well. In the sixties the left was intertwined with a series of progressive social movements; these movements and the left within them attracted enormous numbers of young people, many of whom changed not only their ideas but the way they led their lives through this experience. A vibrant left politics and culture flourished in every major city in the North and in many in the South; few college or university campuses were untouched by it. The left was a major presence in national politics and in intellectual life, outside as well as within academia. The left brought a freshness, honesty and moral integrity to national discussion that compelled attention and respect. Today this is virtually all gone. Though there are many organizing projects concerned with specific social problems, there are only the remnants of a left able to link these issues and call for systematic social change. In national politics the left has little if any influence. There is a subculture that identifies itself as left, but it is insular and dispirited, and too often preoc- cupied with policing the attitudes and language of those in or close to the left. The staleness of the left's perspective and its political marginality in the nineties stand in sharp contrast to its attractiveness and influence in the sixties. The mistakes of the left are only one reason for its decline: the left has also been undermined by the rising power of global corporate capital and discouraged by the collapse of the Soviet Union and the apparent victory of capitalism over socialism. -

ISSN 1393-614X Minerva - An Internet Journal of Philosophy 12 (2008): 1-18 ____________________________________________________ A Strategy of Seclusion: Cavarero's Feminist Decentering of Arendt’s Political Theory Mark Kingston Abstract Through her reading of The Odyssey, Adriana Cavarero proposes a strategy for feminist action based on the creation of small communities as a means of disconnection from patriarchal society. On the face of it, her argument may seem like a straightforward appeal for feminist separatism, but it is in fact intended as a critique of the political theory of Hannah Arendt. In arguing that the public space is inherently patriarchal, and proposing that women therefore abandon the public space in favour of small communities that can provide islands of freedom from patriarchy, Cavarero rejects Arendt’s valorisation of action in a central public realm. This makes Cavarero’s work interesting in the context of contemporary debates on Arendt, in which several commentators have attempted to ‘decenter’ Arendt’s political theory. Cavarero’s ‘small-community’ model of action also unsettles the traditional dichotomy between models that locate action within a central, public space and models that construe action as the individualistic transgression of social norms. Her work is therefore important in the context of the growing interest in small-community models of action. However, Cavarero’s gendering of Arendt’s concept of political action as masculine leads her to engage in identity politics, and this renders the strongest version of her argument unsound. Nonetheless, a slightly weaker version of Cavarero’s argument can support her thesis that Arendt’s political theory must be decentered by the inclusion of a small-community model of action.
