Open Our Hearts a central synagogue machzor פתח לבנו Machzor Hearts Open Our A Central Synagogue A Central Open Our Hearts A Central Synagogue Machzor Open Our Hearts A Central Synagogue Machzor new york city 2018/5779 You’re holding a commemorative edition of a new Rosh Hashanah Machzor for Central Synagogue, made on the twentieth anniversary of the Sanctuary fire. On August 28, 1998, as workers were concluding a three-year renovation of the building, they acci- dentally set off a conflagration that nearly consumed the entire historic structure. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but our Sanctuary space was devastated: the roof, supporting beams, and the choir and organ loft were completely destroyed. We are grateful to the New York City Fire Department, especially the 8th Batallion, for saving the exterior walls and stained glass windows, which enabled us to restore the Sanctuary. Rabbi Peter Rubinstein, then Senior Rabbi, and Livia Thompson, who served as our Executive Director, alongside extraordinary lay leaders, led the charge to rebuild our home. Their goal was to restore the Sanctuary to its authentic glory, but not to replicate it exactly as it had stood 160 years before. Our archivists dug up the original plans and the leadership relied upon them as a foundation for countless discussions about what should change for the future. The chandeliers were restored, but with led lights; the bimah was lowered to bring the clergy closer to the congregation; the organ was replaced with a magnificent instrument that included a new console up front. The building was rewired twenty years ago for a future we did not yet know, and this enabled Central to be among the first to livestream our services. The vision was to rebuild our Sanctuary to be distinctly recognizable as our home and yet changed to meet the moment—rooted in tradition but always looking forward to our future. This singular ethos still drives our work at Central today. And it represents the work of this machzor as well. At Central, we are always striving to re-form our worship experience so that it speaks to our time and our community, while being firmly anchored in our inheritance. This machzor is the result of over two years of work from our clergy team, and yet we know that in future years, it too will need to change. It contains all the familiar, traditional elements and prayers of our High Holiday service, but you will find some innovations, interpretations, and additional commentary to help enrich your prayer experience. At the heart of Central’s rebuilding twenty years ago was the realization that our essence is not tied to any single physical space—but that our power lies in our community itself. So too, this machzor can only come to life within the context of this extraordinary community. Your voices and spirit will lift the prayers off the pages and into our Jewish memory. We are deeply grateful to share with all of you, our Central family, this evolving story of Jewish life and liturgy. B”Sd Minhagim of Congregation Tiferes Yisroel As Given

b”sd Minhagim of Congregation Tiferes Yisroel as given over by Rabbi Menachem Goldberger Yom Kippur Erev Yom Kippur • It is a mitzva to eat and drink erev Y"K. • Rabbi Goldberger's minhag is to have a fleishig seudah in the morning before chatzos. The pizmon from the erev Y"K slichos, "Machar Yihyeh Haos Hazeh", is said at this seudah. • The seuda hamafsekes is after mincha. Kreplach are eaten at this seudah. • Mikveh is a chiyuv for men • Mikveh for women - It is a long-standing minhag (esp. among Chasidim) for women, and girls under Bas Mitzvah, to go to the mikveh erev Y"K (girls over Bas Mitzvah should not go to the mikveh until after they are married). This immersion does not remove the status of nidda. It is for spiritual purity. (The women's mikveh in Baltimore is open for a short period of time erev Y"K morning for this purpose. Call the mikveh for information.) • Kapparos: chicken or money. If using a chicken, it should be waved over each family member's head in their presence. Give tzedaka - $5/person. If using money, use coins, not paper money, waving the coins over each person's head. Give the money to tzdakah; $5/person. • During or following the seudah hamafsekes, the father bentsches the children with the special erev Y"K bracha that is found in the Y"K machzor. • A Ner Neshama is lit. One per family is sufficient. This is in addition to any yahrtzeit candles the family may be lighting. Yom Kippur Greeting • After Rosh HaShanah, and through Yom Kippur, we greet each other with "G'mar chasima tova" (which has the general meaning of: May you be conclusively sealed for the good).

Erev Rosh Hashanah 5780 by Rabbi Debbie Stiel

Erev Rosh Hashanah 5780 By Rabbi Debbie Stiel Aging Well: The Stories We Tell Ourselves and the Company We Keep Another year has gone by. And another one is starting. The years seem to come and go with increasing speed! And you and I don’t get any younger! Aging brings out a certain philosophical quality in many of us. We start to think about the days we have had and those left to us – especially when those remaining are fewer than those that we have had. It becomes natural to ask – ‘how might we best approach the time that remains to us?’ The famous Rabbi -Hillel taught us to think of both ourselves and others – “im ain ani li mi li, uchshani l‘atzmi ma ani. If I am not for myself who am I and if I am only for myself what am I.” This holy season is a good opportunity to ask ourselves both -am I doing what I need to for myself and am I helping others? Often, we focus on the altruistic second part. Tonight, I would like to focus on the first part of this equation. What can we do for ourselves to live life in a way in which we feel nourished, balanced, supported, resilient? First –we might wonder, why even ask this question? Aren’t we all feeling nurtured, positive, loved, hopeful most of the time? If you look on social media or watch the red carpet – you might think so! But the truth is that life is often challenging and even painful.

Dr. Yael Ziegler Pardes The Psalms 1 Psalms of Praise: “Pesukei DeZimra” 1) Shabbat 118b אמר רבי יוסי: יהא חלקי מגומרי הלל בכל יום. איני? והאמר מר: הקורא הלל בכל יום - הרי זה מחרף ומגדף! - כי קאמרינן - בפסוקי דזמרא R. Yosi said: May my portion be with those who complete the Hallel every day. Is that so? Did not the master teach: “Whoever recites the Hallel every day, he is blaspheming and scoffing?” [R. Yosi explained:] When I said it, it was regarding Pesukei DeZimra. He is blaspheming and scoffing – Because the first prophets establish to say those chapters as praise and thanks… and he who recites it daily not in its proper time is like one who sings a melody playfully. פסוקי דזמרא - שני מזמורים של הילולים הללו את ה' מן השמים הללו אל בקדשו . Pesukei DeZimra – Two Psalms of Praise: “Praise God from the heavens” [Psalm 148]; “Praise God in His holiness” [Psalm 150.] Massechet Soferim 18:1 Dr. Yael Ziegler Pardes The Psalms
  • Psalm 34 Author and Date

    Psalm 34 Author and Date

Psalm 34 Title: The Lord Delivers the Righteous Author and Date: David Key Verses: Psalm 34:4, 7, 17, 19 Type: Thanksgiving Outline A. Thanksgiving: I will bless with a song because the Lord delivers (verses 1-10). B. Teaching: I will teach with a sermon because the Lord delivers (verses 11-22). Notes Title: “A Psalm of David.” See the notes on Psalm 3. “Who changed his behavior before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed.” This incident may be the one recorded in 1 Samuel 21:10-22:2 where David feigned madness before King Achish of Gath so that he would be left alone. Some commentators believe that “Abimelech” (meaning father of a king) is inaccurate, while others believe this name was a generic, dynastic title (like Pharoah) of the kings of Gath. Verses 1-22: This psalm is one of nine alphabetic acrostic psalms: Psalm 9, 10, 25, 34, 37, 111, 112, 119, and 145 (see the notes for Psalm 9, 10, and 25). The first word of each verse begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet (aleph, beth, gimel, daleth, etc.). There are 22 verses just like the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. However, in this psalm two letters (the Hebrew letter he and vav) are used in one verse (verse 5) and another letter (the Hebrew letter pe) is repeated (in verse 16 and 22) which make for 22 verses. Psalm 34 describes the Lord as a deliverer, a savior, and a redeemer of the righteous. Verse 5: Note that the psalmist switches abruptly from “I” to “they” in this verse.

On the Occassion of the Opening oft the Art Collection of the Jewish Community Berlin1 by Moritz Stern Berlin has been enriched by a new place of cultural-historical interest. A Jewish museum has opened its gates. With pleasure, I follow the invitation to inform also the readers of this magazine about the latest treasure of the entire Jewish community. Vestibule of the Art Collection of the Jewish Community Berlin Phot. M. Mandowsky, Berlin Albert Wolf2 in Dresden (died in 1907), no stranger to “Ost und West”—the year’s issues of 1903 include his essay “Daniel Chodowiecki and Moses Mendelssohn”—was known as collector of Jewish antiquities and art objects. Filled with love and enthusiasm for Judaism, he spared no time, effort, or expenses to increase his collection. He made it his life’s sacred mission to prevent the testimonies of Jewish art and cultural activities, as far as they were still available for purchase, from being squandered or even wrecked. Thus, coins, medals, seals, stamps, all kinds of art- and ritual devices, copper engravings, drawings, photographs, illustrated manuscripts, autographs, rare writings for special occasions and prints piled up in his house. He did not collect all these valuable items to flaunt 1 Stern, Moritz: Zur Eroeffnung der Kunstsammlung der Juedischen Gemeinde zu Berlin, in: Ost und West. KEEP CALM AND WORSHIP ON Colossians 3:16-17 ¹⁶Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. ¹⁷And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. What is Worship? “…our response to God… by our words and actions that He is worthy of our deepest love.” - Created to Worship by Norma Jewell & Eva Gibson “This people honors me with their lips, But their heart is far from me; In vain do they worship me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” ~Matthew 15:8-9 What is Worship? The heart matters. Triple A: Affection | Attention | Admiration Ways of Worship - Dancing ¹⁴Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, ¹⁵while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sounds of trumpets. ~2 Samuel 6:14-15 ESV Ways of Worship - Prayer ⁵“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others…⁶But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father…⁹Pray then like this…Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.” ~ Matthew 6:5-6 & 9 ESV & KJV Ways of Worship - Tithing “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.
