Jews and Christians: Perspectives on Mission The Lambeth-Jewish Forum Reuven Silverman, Patrick Morrow and Daniel Langton Jews and Christians: Perspectives on Mission The Lambeth-Jewish Forum Both Christianity and Judaism have a vocation to mission. In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, God’s people are spoken of as a light to the nations. Yet mission is one of the most sensitive and divisive areas in Jewish-Christian relations. For Christians, mission lies at the heart of their faith because they understand themselves as participating in the mission of God to the world. As the recent Anglican Communion document, Generous Love, puts it: “The boundless life and perfect love which abide forever in the heart of the Trinity are sent out into the world in a mission of renewal and restoration in which we are called to share. As members of the Church of the Triune God, we are to abide among our neighbours of different faiths as signs of God’s presence with them, and we are sent to engage with our neighbours as agents of God’s mission to them.”1 As part of the lifeblood of Christian discipleship, mission has been understood and worked out in a wide range of ways, including teaching, healing, evangelism, political involvement and social renewal. Within this broad and rich understanding of mission, one key aspect is the relation between mission and evangelism. In particular, given the focus of the Lambeth-Jewish Forum, how does the Christian understanding of mission affects relations between Christianity and Judaism? Christian mission and Judaism has been controversial both between Christians and Jews, and among Christians themselves. -

You Already Know A Lot of Jewish History! • The Old Testament is the history of Jewish people. • You’re probably familiar with the big themes of: o Creation – Garden of Eden, Cain and Abel, Flood and Tower of Babel. o Covenant – Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph in Egypt, redemption from Egypt, plagues, giving of Law at Sinai. o Conquest – Joshua and Judges. o “C”ingdom – King Saul, David, Unified Kingdom under Solomon. o Collapse/Restoration – Divided Kingdom, Assyrian/Babylonian Captivities, return to land under Ezra and Nehemiah. • Probably familiar with Jewish customs in New Testament too o Sadducees, Pharisees, washings. o Jesus celebrating Passover (Luke 22:15; John 2:13-23; 13:1-3), Unleavened Bread (Matt. 26:17-28; Mk. 14:12-25), Pentecost (Acts 2) and Booths/Tabernacles (John 7:2-3). o Hear about Jewish customs like circumcision (Acts 15; 16:3; Rom. 2:25), Jewish weddings (Matt. 25:1-13), etc. • As a Christian, you are in good position to witness to Jewish people because: o You already know some Jewish history! o You can use what you already know to build bridges into their lives. 1 2. Important Events Since Biblical Times • Jewish people lost their temple (AD 70). o There were three main groups: Sadducees, Pharisees and Zealots. o Sadducees were the priests. But they could no longer do sacrifices without a temple so they lost control. o Zealots died at Masada, Herod’s Fortress, in AD 73 with the mass suicide of 956 people. -

Lauren Winner's best-selling memoir of her conversion from Reform Judaism to Orthodox Judaism and then on to evangelical Christianity is one of the best reads of the last decade, and her story illustrates one type of conversion by Jews to the Christian faith. Her aesthetically-prompted and liturgically-shaped conversion story is as difficult to plot as it is joyous to read—she tells us about things that do not matter to conversion theory while she does not tell us about things that do matter. In her defense, she did not write her story so the theoretically-inclined could analyze her con- version. Here is a defining moment in her conversion story:1 My favorite spot at The Cloisters was a room downstairs called the Treasury. In glass cases were small fragile reliquaries and icons and prayer books. In one case was a tiny psalter and Book of Hours. It lay open to a picture of Christ's arrest. I could barely read the Latin. Sometimes I would stand in front of that psalter for an hour. I wanted to hold it in my hand. My boyfriend in college was Dov, an Orthodox Jew from Westchester County whom I had met through Rabbi M. Dov thought all this [her studying American Christianity and interest in things Christian] was weird. He watched me watch the Book of Hours, and he watched me write endless papers about religious re- vivals in the South. -

These include whether Catholics should pray for the conversion of Jews, whether the purpose of interreligious dialogue is to lead others to Christian faith, and whether Catholics should undertake non-coercive "missions" to Jews. An underlying theological topic in all these disputes is how the biblical concept of "covenant" is understood in the Jewish and Catholic traditions and in terms of their interrelationship. The resolution of these questions could set the pattern of official Catholic-Jewish relations for many years. In a public dialogue of these matters, Dr. Edward Kessler from Cambridge University in Great Britain and Dr. Philip A. Broadly speaking, the subject of the Christology that is still worth talking about in the academic pulpit is the title "Messiah" carried by Jesus Christ. In general, the Judeo-Islamic community and some Christians are still dilemma in positioning Jesus, especially regarding the worthiness of Jesus Christ to be accepted as the Messiah. Placing Jesus Christ in the right place for all three of these great religions has proven to be no easy matter. Especially for Judeo-Islam, Christians generally accept Jesus Christ as the Messiah. On the contrary for Jews and Islam. Some Jews gave rise to a half-movement of Judaism and half- Christians in terms of seeing Jesus as the Messiah. Likewise with Islam. 1 Jewish-Christian Hostility in the United States: Perceptions from a Jewish Point of View JONATHAN D. SARNA y medieval ancestors would have had no difficulty with my sub M ject here. "Jewish-Christian hostility?" they would have ex claimed, somewhat incredulously. "Why that is due to the fact that Christians hate Jews. That is all there is to it." This censorious attitude did not merely reflect age-old prejudice. It also seemed to comport with reality as experienced on a day-to-day basis: the abuses, the vilifications, the persecutions. With a few notable exceptions, medieval Jews quite generally viewed interreligious hatred as something inevitable, and they found rabbinic exegesis that supported their claims. Rabbinic midrash taught that "all the nations of the world hate Israel"; Rabbi Simeon bar Yokhai considered the fact that "Esau [interpreted as Christianity] hates Jacob" to be an "axiom."l With the coming of the Enlightenment and the gradual theological shift toward an emphasis on love, these attitudes began to change. Jews and Christians became far better acquainted with one another; they dis covered how much they held in common, and gradually a few brave souls replaced the old rhetoric of enmity with a new rhetoric of tolerance and amity. Moses Mendelssohn, the great German-Jewish philosopher of the Enlightenment, boasted that he had "the good fortune of having for a friend many an excellent man who is not of my faith.
