  • Movie Review: ‘Cars 3’
Movie review: ‘Cars 3’ NEW YORK — Fasten your seatbelts and start your engines for a wild (and often ear- splitting) ride in “Cars 3” (Disney), the latest installment of the family-friendly animated franchise. Six years after the initial sequel and 11 since the series began with “Cars,” the anthropomorphic autos are back with a vengeance. Director Brian Fee ramps up the racing action (and the roar of the engines) while introducing a fleet of new characters sure to please young viewers — not to mention toy manufacturers. Happily, there’s much more than the dizzying blur of NASCAR-like action. Screenwriters Kiel Murray, Bob Peterson and Mike Rich inject a nice amount of heart and pathos into the comedic plot, and add winning messages about second chances and the value of mentoring. The years have been kind to ace racer Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson). He’s still at the top of his game. But just over his shoulder is a new generation of faster vehicles, like the brash rookie Jackson Storm (voice of Armie Hammer). “Enjoy your retirement,” Jackson tells Lightning as he whizzes past. In a flash, Lightning is sidelined by an accident. Disillusioned and depressed, he retreats to his adopted home of Radiator Springs. There he draws on the support of his loyal tow-truck sidekick, Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy), and comely Porsche sweetheart, Sally (voice of Bonnie Hunt). Sally knows Lightning must look to the future. “Don’t fear failure,” she insists. “Take a chance. Try something new.” A spiffy fresh paint job by Ramone (voice of Cheech Marin) helps.

Legal Lessons in On-Stage Character Development: Comedians, Characters, Cable Guys & Copyright Convolutions Clay Calvert⊗ ABSTRACT This article addresses the trials and tribulations faced by stand-up comedians who seek copyright protection for on-stage characters they create, often during solo performances. The article initially explores the current, confused state of the law surrounding the copyrightability of fictional characters. The doctrinal muddle is magnified for comedians because the case law that addresses the fictional character facet of copyright jurisprudence overwhelmingly involves characters developed within the broader framework of plots and storylines found in traditional media artifacts such as books, comic strips, cartoons and movies. The article then deploys the 2014 federal court ruling in Azaria v. Bierko as a timely analytical springboard for addressing comedic-character copyright issues. Finally, the article offers multiple tips and suggestions for comedians and actors seeking copyright protection in their on- stage characters. I. INTRODUCTION The Whacky World of Jonathan Winters aired on television from 1972 through 1974.1 The humor of its star, Jonathan Winters,2 came primarily “from his construction of outrageously fantastic situations and characters.”3 Those characters included the Oldest Airline Stewardess4 and, perhaps most notably, ⊗ Professor & Brechner Eminent Scholar in Mass Communication and Director of the Marion B. Short film collection is a visual history of Pixar Animation Studios - Michael Kleinschrodt - Times-Picayune - NOLA.com 9/17/08 7:45 AM Short film collection is a visual history of Pixar Animation Studios Posted by mkleinsc November 02, 2007 04:59AM A desire to prove the ability of new computer hardware and software led a group of technicians at LucasFilm Ltd. in 1984 to create a 90-second animated film titled "The Adventures of Andre and Wally B." Despite the film's artistic limitations, it excited animators at a graphic artists conference, who realized that computer animation was becoming a viable field, no longer limited to flat, unshaded and untextured colors, and the simplest of geometric shapes. The technology could be used to tell a story. Soon after, Apple executive Steve Jobs and other investors bought The Graphics Group from George Lucas, hired away the techies responsible for the division's work, and set up the division as its own company, bringing in John Lasseter -- an actual animator -- to provide the creative juice for the newly rechristened Pixar Animation Studios. The "Pixar Short Films Collection, Vol. 1," which is being released to DVD on Tuesday in conjunction with the DVD release of the summer hit "Ratatouille," provides a visual history of Pixar and computer animation. Jack-Jack, the harmless-looking infant from 'The Incredibles,' reveals his superpower in 'Jack-Jack Attack,' one of 13 computer-animated works included in the 'Pixar Short Films Collection, Vol. 1,' which arrives Tuesday on DVD. The 13 films include the studio's first official film, "Luxo Jr.," which is referenced in Pixar's animated logo, in which an artist's lamp mischievously tamps down the "I" in "Pixar." The films can be divided into three rough categories: early films that experimented with the technology, later works created for the animators' own amusement and follow-ups to the feature films for which Pixar has become famous.

“I grew up loving cars and the Southern California car culture. My dad was a parts manager at a Chevrolet dealership, so ‘Cars’ was very personal to me — the characters, the small town, their love and support for each other and their way of life. I couldn’t stop thinking about them. I wanted to take another road trip to new places around the world, and I thought a way into that world could be another passion of mine, the spy movie genre. I just couldn’t shake that idea of marrying the two distinctly different worlds of Radiator Springs and international intrigue. And here we are.” — John Lasseter, Director ABOUT THE PRODUCTION Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios are off to the races in “Cars 2” as star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and his best friend, the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy), jump-start a new adventure to exotic new lands stretching across the globe. The duo are joined by a hometown pit crew from Radiator Springs when they head overseas to support Lightning as he competes in the first-ever World Grand Prix, a race created to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the finish line is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and bombshells when Mater is mistakenly ensnared in an intriguing escapade of his own: international espionage. Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and “towing” the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British spy Finn McMissile (voice of Michael Caine) and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell (voice of Emily Mortimer).
