According to Nicole, this 1,200 sq. ft. facility is the smallest in the community of RMc Houses. The Chief Happiness Officer himself, Ronald McDonald congratulated the Rotary Club of Bakersfield West for initiating the movement in financial support with the RM Franchise Owners to provide this respite of comfort for families in needs – especially serving the parents and siblings. Nicole believes strongly in the importance of accountability and transparency as nonprofits accomplish their missions. She has emphasized that all the money that is raised here in Bakersfield stays in Bakersfield for this purpose. With the continued community and support opportunities in this extended stay at the RMH, we can contribute to both welfare of the patient and parents. • My Umpiring Career Began in 1986 with the Marine Park Umpire Association in Brooklyn, When I Realized I Could No Longer Handle an 85 Mile an Hour Fastball
My umpiring career began in 1986 with the Marine Park Umpire Association in Brooklyn, when I realized I could no longer handle an 85 mile an hour fastball. I immediately figured out that I was an idiot for playing so long and not umpiring earlier in my life. It just felt so natural. Since I was a catcher for most of my playing career, I had a pretty good grasp of the game. Two years into my new career I joined my Brooklyn High School Association and soon became one of the leaders in the group. In 1989 I was one of four umpires from our Brooklyn Association chosen to break the barrier in Pony Baseball by becoming the first non-local umpires to work a Pony World Series. It was the first of 2 Pony World Series I worked. 1990 was my first City High School Championship at Yankee Stadium, Tottenville vs. Lafayette and my second was in 1994 at Shea Stadium, featured George Washington High School vs Tottenville led by Jason Marquis. In both championships, I had the honor of calling balls and strikes. I have also worked 4 Catholic High School Championships. 1991 was my first year umpiring College ball. During my 24 year career, I worked Division I, II and III games with numerous conference championships. During the first 2 inaugural seasons, I worked for the Staten Island Yankees. I have also worked the Can-AM (Independent A Ball) and the Atlantic League (Independent AAA ball) games. I was trained by the best, Doug Harvey, former MLB umpire Mark Barron and current MLB umpire Larry Vanover.

  • Taking Umpiring Seriously: How Philosophy Can Help Umpires Make the Right Calls
BOTTOM OF THE THIRD 6 Taking Umpiring Seriously: How Philosophy Can Help Umpires Make the Right Calls J.S. RUSSELL When I’m right no one remembers. When I’m wrong no one forgets. —Umpire DOUG HARVEY There’s an old baseball joke that tells a lot about why umpires find themselves in this unhappy position. The Devil challenges God to a baseball game between the residents of heaven and hell. Puzzled, God asks the Devil: “Why would you want to play me at baseball? I have all the greatest players at my disposal.” “I know,” responds the Devil, “But I have all the umpires.” Jokes like this one, and remarks like umpire Harvey’s, readily attest that baseball umpires lay sad claim to being the most under- appreciated and disrespected participants in sport. Indeed, any- one who has ever spent time in the stands watching ballgames has seen the contempt that is freely heaped on umpires: the boos and catcalls, the kicked up dirt, close up views of oral hygiene, and even at times common assaults. All this merely recaps what everyone already knows: umpires deserve better. But there is another less obvious, though just as compelling, reason for treating umpires with more serious respect. What umpires do is philosophically fascinating. This is a novel concept for the sporting public or, indeed, for umpires themselves, since they are not usually trained philosophers. But as we shall see, a philosophical treatment of umpiring is no mere academic exercise. It can have important practical impli- 87 88 J.S. Russell cations for determining what umpires actually do on the field.

  • Baseball Justice
Peter Dreier: Baseball Justice LikeThe Huffington Post 224K February 15, 2011 This is the print preview: Back to normal view » Peter Dreier Posted: July 24, 2010 06:03 PM Baseball Justice As baseball inducts slugger Andre Dawson, umpire Doug Harvey and manager Whitey Herzog into its Hall of Fame at ceremonies in Cooperstown, New York on Sunday, the glaring absence of Marvin Miller, the first executive director of the players' union, and Curt Flood, the baseball pioneer who challenged the sport's feudal system, reminds us of the narrow parochialism and conservatism of baseball's current establishment. All histories of baseball point with pride to its role in helping to dismantle America's racial caste system when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. In recent years, however, Major League Baseball (MLB) has hardly distinguished itself as a paragon of American virtue or a pioneer for social justice or moral clarity. Its corporate mentality, its failure to deal with widespread drug use, and its decline in popularity among America's youth (more of whom now play soccer than Little League file:///H|/Dreier/PDFs%20of%20Dreier's%20Articles/Baseball%20Justice.html (1 of 22)2/15/2011 11:35:41 AM Peter Dreier: Baseball Justice baseball), don't reflect well on what its pooh- bahs still call the "national pastime." Here are five things that baseball could do to redeem itself to reflect the best of America's liberty-and-justice-for-all values. 1. Elect Marvin Miller to the Hall of Fame The man who freed ballplayers from indentured servitude has been kept out of the Hall of Fame as a result of a coup engineered by the conservative cabal that controls Major League Baseball.
