    The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance

    Gordon 1 Jessica Gordon 29 March 2010 Honors Thesis Everything was Beautiful at the Ballet: The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance During the mid-1860s, a ballet troupe from Paris was brought to the Academy of Music in lower Manhattan. Before the company’s first performance, however, the theatre in which they were to dance was destroyed in a fire. Nearby, producer William Wheatley was preparing to begin performances of The Black Crook, a melodrama with music by Charles M. Barras. Seeing an opportunity, Wheatley conceived the idea to combine his play and the displaced dance company, mixing drama and spectacle on one stage. On September 12, 1866, The Black Crook opened at Niblo’s Gardens and was an immediate sensation. Wheatley had unknowingly created a new American art form that would become a tradition for years to come. Since the first performance of The Black Crook, dance has played an important role in musical theatre. From the dream ballet in Oklahoma to the “Dance at the Gym” in West Side Story to modern shows such as Movin’ Out, dance has helped tell stories and engage audiences throughout musical theatre history. Dance has not always been as integrated in musicals as it tends to be today. I plan to examine the moments in history during which the role of dance on the Broadway stage changed and how those changes affected the manner in which dance is used on stage today. Additionally, I will discuss the important choreographers who have helped develop the musical theatre dance styles and traditions. As previously mentioned, theatrical dance in America began with the integration of European classical ballet and American melodrama.

Wilkommen John Kander (1927 – Present) From Cabaret Based off of the 1951 play by queer playwright John Van Druten, Cabaret was written and premiered in 1966 by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff. The play by Van Druten, titled I Am a Camera, was inspired by the 1939 novel by Christopher Isherwood, Goodbye to Berlin. This novel is important in the inception of Cabaret as well as I Am a Camera, as it gives the plot, the conflict, and the characters used throughout the play and the musical.

In opera, music is the primary element, supported by the set and costumes. The set and costumes provide a visual interpretation of the music. In film, music and sound play a supporting role. Music and sound create an ambiance in films that aid in telling the story. I consider the musical to be an equal and reciprocal balance of music and vision. More importantly, a successful musical is defined by its plot, music, and visual elements, and how well they are integrated. Observing the transformation of the musical and analyzing many different genres of concert music, I realize that each new concept of transformation always blends traditional and contemporary elements, no matter how advanced the concept is or was at the time. Through my analysis of three musicals, I shed more light on where this ii transformation may be heading and what tradition may be replaced by a new concept, and vice versa.

    Purpose and History The Community Band of Brevard exists to educate its members, to entertain its audiences, and to serve its community. Our musical director is Mr. Marion Scott. Mr. Scott formed the Band in 1985 to provide a performance outlet for adult musicians in the area. Our membership, currently numbering about 80, includes people of all ages representing many occupations. Most of our concerts have a specific theme upon which the music focuses. Those themes have often led us to include exceedingly difficult works, which we willingly do, and to include special guest artists. The Band gives several concerts throughout the year. Our concerts include many diverse musical genres, composers, and often previously unpublished works for band. Each program is planned to please a variety of musical tastes. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Whether you love the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals like The Sound of Music, Stephen Schwartz’s sensation Wicked, the rock musicals American Idiot and Mamma Mia or the new movie musicals Rock of Ages and Les Misérables, this class will examine them all. Taught by a professional actress and professor who currently has a student on Broadway, this class will explore many of Broadway’s milestone musicals complimented by a collection of over 400 video clips, original Broadway cast albums, scores, librettos (scripts), audio clips and photographs. Students will immerse themselves in the world of the musical by studying some of the most influential composers, lyricists, directors, choreographers, and performers that have contributed to the historical development of this art form. By exploring the language of music, the art of drama and the beauty of dance, you will investigate what it takes to bring musicals from the page to the stage, and what makes them triumph or flop. Students will gain insight into what really happens at an audition for a musical, how the world of musical theatre functions and the effect television shows like Glee and Smash as well as the resurgent popularity of movie musicals are having on the future of both the Broadway musical and its audience. Also, we will examine composers from several of the countries visited during the voyage who have had an impact on the development of the musical theatre landscape including Andrew Lloyd Webber (England), Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus (Sweden) and Irving Berlin (Russia), as well as the work of American composers and librettists who have used the countries we are visiting as settings for their musicals.
