Winter 2019 The Sky’s The Limit! Welcome to The Voice It has been another busy and fun filled term for us at St Bernard's! The Winter 2019 students never seem to lose a second as we focus as always on academic The Sky’s The Limit! life, enrichment, trips and visits as well as fundraising and leadership activities in school. Advent is a very busy time for us and we are looking forward to a very busy calendar of events such as the staff pantomime, fundraising for our chosen charities as well as the Christmas Concert! We are hoping for a really good rest over the holidays so that we can return refreshed in the New Year to our brand new buildings - at last the students will get the environment that they deserve! I wish you the most wonderful Christmas period and hope that you get to spend some quality time together as families! God bless, Mrs Kent, Principal Trixie News Beatrix (Trixie) is five months old now and although still an energetic little puppy, she has been working wonders in school, not only with our students, but also with staff and visitors. She happily comes into school every day bringing a smile to everyone’s face and is always very eager and happy to meet and greet our students. She will quite happily pose with students for selfies, as she loves having her picture taken. She has grown in confidence since we first adopted her back in September, she absolutely loves going for long walks, exploring and chasing the leaves. She has learnt many tricks and her behaviour is amazing! Within school, Beatrix works with a variety of our ! students who all have varied reasons! as to why they need some “TRIXIE TIME.” She My new house! is very calming and can sense when a student needs her help. She often sits on their Made by a student I work with. knee if they are upset, will sit next to them whilst they complete a piece of work or will sit and listen to them read to her or just listen to them talking to her. She has been a massive support to students when they have had to have a difficult conversation with an adult. The students find it a lot easier to talk through Trixie whilst cuddling, brushing or stroking her. She has also helped students who find it difficult to come into school as they have a little “TRIXIE TIME” before lessons start. We are very pleased that she has just passed her first round of training to becoming a nurture dog. She picked up everything very quickly and was an absolute star pupil. She will be starting her next round of training in the New Year. All of the staff and students love to see her when she is out and about around school. She has attended meetings, assemblies, some staff have designed lessons around her and this Christmas, she may just have a small part in our school pantomime. !!!!!!!! I do like a puppuccino from Starbucks! !! ! We look forward to watching!!!!!!!! her grow and develop over the coming months, and to see what other adventures she’ll have at St Bernard’s. Attendance Award! Congratulations to our students ! who won prizes. One was an iPad for maintaining 100% attendance for the whole of last term and the other a Meadowhall voucher for most ! improved attendance. !! But its future is in the hands of women. Rotherham businesswoman Dame Julie Kenny CBE formed the trust that fought to buy it, Sarah McLeod is the CEO steering it forward and more female hands are shaping its restoration. Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust recently invited local schoolgirls to meet some of the indispensable women in the construction sector who are using their talents and passion to make the magnificent Rotherham stately home great again. Taking its lead from June’s International Women in Engineering Day 2019, the event aimed to open the girls’ eyes to career possibilities in the male-dominated sector. St Bernard’s pupil Libby Scholey, 14, of Herringthorpe said: “I learned there are lots of opportunities, whether you are a woman or a man. We are lucky. In the past, women didn’t have the opportunities we have now.” Nazia Seidu-Kpebu,14, of East Dene, loves maths and science but has not yet thought about a career path. “But I do know that women can do the exact same thing as men and they deserve the same amount of respect,” she said. Sarah McLeod, who admitted that as a schoolgirl she never dreamed she would be at the helm of a stately home, said: “Women who have made their mark in male-dominated careers need to give a helping hand to the next generation of career women. “That’s what our Sky’s The Limit event was all about. During the week each year group had an assembly which highlighted the plight of 2.3 billion people who don’t have access to clean and hygienic toilet facilities. The students were tasked with raising £60 to twin a toilet, to help fund a project in a poor community that will enable families to build a basic toilet, have access to clean water and learn about hygiene – a vital combination that saves lives. A toilet donated by Wicks DIY was placed in the reception area of school where students and visitors were encouraged to dump their loose change while staff paid to take part in a toilet quiz.
