Dear MCF donors, fundholders and friends, We are pleased to share with you Madison Community Foundation’s Annual Report for 2015.

As we look back over the past few years, we recognize that 2013 was a year of learning, 2014 a year of planning, and 2015 a year of implementation. The themes that emerged when we asked hundreds of stakeholders about MCF’s “unique value” have served not only to clarify MCF’s role in the community, but also to create expectations about our future.

Our work centers on these themes: independent credibility, knowledge of the community, permanence, philanthropic expertise and community connectivity. A few examples of how we have deepened our commitment to these areas in 2015:

▪ Independent credibility – MCF completed a rigorous national reaccreditation process – strengthening its governance structure, policies and protocols.

▪ Knowledge of the community – MCF staff are preparing to launch a new website, providing efficiency and effectiveness Blaine R. Renfert for our donors and a richer resource for nonprofits and the community. MCF Board of Governors Chair ▪ Permanence – Last summer, MCF engaged an independent consulting firm to review the work of its investment manager. The firm recommended modest improvements and recognized MCF investment performance is in the top quartile of community foundations. MCF also introduced a new, tiered-fee structure, reducing fees on larger funds and enabling them to distribute more resources for our community.

▪ Philanthropic Expertise – As part of our efforts to further facilitate giving, MCF added real estate and personal property to the list of gifts it can process. In addition, MCF welcomed a new Supporting Organization, providing tax savings that are only available through community foundations.

▪ Community Connectivity – Connecting donors to the causes they care about and helping them make effective decisions about their resources are at the heart of MCF’s work. We take great care to bring the community together for the common good. Over the past year, we have better connected MCF to communities of color and issues of race equality, broadening our reach as the community’s foundation.

It is an honor to be part of the community’s foundation. Thank you for joining us to improve and strengthen the region we call home. We hope you enjoy the stories of impact in the pages that follow. They are a mirror held up to our community – a celebration of the people who give and the causes that change our world.

4 2015 ANNUAL REPORT ALL HANDS ON DECK 100 Black Men leaders share how positivity, drive and passion can make a difference in the future of young men in our community

When Madison native Chris Canty asked his father, Wayne, if he could join 100 Black Men of Madison, a youth leadership and development program for area youth, particularly young men of color, the response was direct and definitive: “Are you ready?”

A recent UW-Madison grad, Canty had grown up around his father’s numerous volunteer activities in the community and saw the positive impact firsthand. But it was the sense of responsibility his father and his peers shared in helping to shape the next generation of Madison men that begged the question of his readiness. Expectations were high, Canty recalls, but he was more than ready.

“I think we’re doing so many great and really positive things right now,” says Canty, who chairs the group’s annual Backpacks for Success program that gives away over 1,500 backpacks to school kids every August.

J.R. Sims says the opportunity to make a positive difference in even a single child’s life is what drew him to join “The 100,” as it’s known to its members. With the recent launch of a community collaboration called Project MEN AT WORK: Enis Ragland (left), Chris Canty and J.R. Sims support and mentor our next generation of leaders. MCF’s Community Impact team works with nonprofits to determine size and scope of the project and a realistic challenge goal. As the money is raised, MCF distributes the match using a one-to-one or two-to-one ratio.

Why are they successful? Challenge grants are powerful tools to increase giving from current donors and reach out to prospective donors, while generating a sense of excitement and urgency around the cause.

Editor’s Note: We hope you find MCF’s 2015 Report to the Community informative, but even more so, inspiring. Behind every donor, and behind every endowment fund, there is a unique story to tell and a special meaning to every gift. We titled this year’s annual report “Madison Gives,” and we’ve adopted the same moniker as our new website name, our email accounts—even as the title of our annual event. At MCF, we have the privilege of seeing how much Madison gives, and the impact of your generosity in our schools, families, neighborhoods, and communities across Dane County and around the world. On behalf of all of us at MCF, thank you for the privilege of supporting your charitable giving. Because of you, our community keeps getting better. - Brennan Nardi, Communications Director

As a community, we create our future together. Together … we are cleaning our lakes and protecting our natural areas.

Together … we are bringing music, dance, and theater to tens-of-thousands of people.

Together … we are enhancing the lives of seniors through nutrition, transportation and engagement.

Together … we are providing splash pads, fitness programs and learning opportunities so children thrive.

Together … we are addressing racial disparities through community engagement, education and employment.

Together… We are empowering women and girls. Together we really do make a difference.
