  • Manuel Manages to Join Quir
Manuel manages to join quirky Phillies company - The Delaware County ... http://www.delcotimes.com/articles/2009/09/15/sports/doc4aaf58bdf2a5... Serving Delaware County, PA Sports Published: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 No comments posted. | Email to a friend | Print version | ShareThis | RSS Feeds By Rich Westcott, Special to the Times Click to enlarge It doesn’t take a math whiz to figure out where Charlie Manuel ranks on the all-time list of Phillies managers. The numbers are easily understandable. They show that Manuel has joined the Little General, the Father of Baseball, and the guy who claimed that “even Napoleon had his Watergate,” as the most successful managers in Phillies history. When he won his 432nd game recently, Manuel moved into fourth place on the team’s all-time victories list for managers, trailing only Gene Mauch (646), Harry Wright (636), and Danny Ozark (594). Manuel, in his fifth season, reached 432 faster than the other three. By moving past Jim Fregosi, Manuel, who at 65 is the oldest man to ever manage the Phillies, put himself in line for some other milestones. He could become the team’s first manager to win 85 or more games five years 1 of 5 9/15/2009 3:56 PM Manuel manages to join quirky Phillies company - The Delaware County ... http://www.delcotimes.com/articles/2009/09/15/sports/doc4aaf58bdf2a5... in a row. Most likely, he’ll also become only the second manager in club history to win three straight division titles, joining Ozark (1976-78), who is the only one to win 100 or more regular-season games (and did so in back-to-back seasons).

  • HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY the 2019 Season Signifies the 42Nd Season for the Nashville Sounds
HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY The 2019 season signifies the 42nd season for the Nashville Sounds. It’s the 22nd season as a member of the 16- team Pacific Coast League, and the first as the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Despite the 42nd season as the Nashville Sounds, baseball’s roots in Nashville go back to the 19th Century. In fact, baseball has been played in Middle Tennessee since at least 1860, when the Republican Banner newspaper published a July 25th report on the game’s popularity the previous fall. During the Civil War, Union soldiers temporarily based here helped spread the game in the local community. Home field was a place known as the Sulphur Springs Bottom, a half-mile north of today’s state capitol. When the original Southern League was organized in 1885, Nashville was a charter city and games were played at Nashville’s Athletic Park, as the Sulphur Springs Bottom location came to be known. The city fielded several entries in the league over the next ten years -- the Americans (1885-86), the Blues (1887), the Tigers (1893-94), and the Seraphs (1895) -- but was unable to claim a pennant. When the Southern Association was formed in 1901, Athletic Park – which was later given the name Sulphur Dell by famed sportswriter Grantland Rice -- became the permanent home to the Nashville Volun- teers (or Vols, for short), who played there for the next 61 years. Under the guidance of manager Newt Fisher, the Nashville club won the SA’s first two pennants. The team, which was not known as the Vols until a “name the team” contest conducted prior to the 1908 season, continued to build a solid, loyal fan base.

  • Baseball Diplomacy, Baseball Deployment: the National
BASEBALL DIPLOMACY, BASEBALL DEPLOYMENT: THE NATIONAL PASTIME IN U.S.-CUBA RELATIONS by JUSTIN W. R. TURNER HOWARD JONES, COMMITTEE CHAIR STEVEN BUNKER LAWRENCE CLAYTON LISA LINDQUIST-DORR RICHARD MEGRAW A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2012 Copyright Justin W. R. Turner 2012 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT The game of baseball, a shared cultural affinity linking Cuba and the United States, has played a significant part in the relationship between those nations. Having arrived in Cuba as a symbol of growing American influence during the late nineteenth century, baseball would come to reflect the political and economic connections that developed into the 1900s. By the middle of the twentieth century, a significant baseball exchange saw talented Cuban players channeled into Major League Baseball, and American professionals compete in Cuba’s Winter League. The 1959 Cuban Revolution permanently changed this relationship. Baseball’s politicization as a symbol of the Revolution, coupled with political antagonism, an economic embargo, and an end to diplomatic ties between the Washington and Havana governments largely destroyed the U.S.-Cuba baseball exchange. By the end of the 1960s, Cuban and American baseball interactions were limited to a few international amateur competitions, and political hardball nearly ended some of these. During the 1970s, Cold War détente and the success of Ping Pong Diplomacy with China sparked American efforts to use baseball’s common ground as a basis for improving U.S.-Cuba relations.
