Shoreline Evolution and Modern Beach Sand Composition Along a Coastal Stretch of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Southern Italy Consuele Morrone and Fabio Ietto*
Morrone and Ietto Journal of Palaeogeography (2021) 10:7 https://doi.org/10.1186/s42501-021-00088-y Journal of Palaeogeography ORIGINAL ARTICLE Open Access Shoreline evolution and modern beach sand composition along a coastal stretch of the Tyrrhenian Sea, southern Italy Consuele Morrone and Fabio Ietto* Abstract This contribution focuses on a multidisciplinary research showing the geomorphological evolution and the beach sand composition of the Tyrrhenian shoreline between Capo Suvero promontory and Gizzeria Lido village (Calabria, southern Italy). The aim of the geomorphological analysis was to reconstruct the evolutionary shoreline stages and the present-day sedimentary dynamics along approximately 6 km of coastline. The results show a general trend of beach nourishment during the period 1870–2019. In this period, the maximum shoreline accretion value was estimated equal to + 900 m with an average rate of + 6.5 m/yr. Moreover, although the general evolutionary trend is characterized by a remarkable accretion, the geomorphological analysis highlighted continuous modifications of the beaches including erosion processes. The continuous beach modifications occurred mainly between 1953 and 1983 and were caused mainly by human activity in the coastal areas and inside the hydrographic basins. The beach sand composition allowed an assessment of the mainland petrological sedimentary province and its dispersal pattern of the present coastal dynamics. Petrographic analysis of beach sands identified a lithic metamorphi-clastic petrofacies, characterized by abundant fine-grained schists and phyllites sourced from the crystalline terrains of the Coastal Range front and carried by the Savuto River. The sand is also composed of a mineral assemblage comparable to that of the Amato River provenance. -

The Value of Connections: Evidence from the Italian-American Mafia
The Value of Connections: Evidence from the Italian-American Mafia ∗ Giovanni Mastrobuoni† September 2013‡ Abstract Using declassified Federal Bureau of Narcotics records on 800 US Mafia mem- bers active in the 1950s and 1960s, and on their connections within the Cosa Nostra network, I estimate network effects on gangsters’ economic status. Lacking informa- tion on criminal proceeds, I measure economic status exploiting detailed information about their place of residence. Housing values are reconstructed using current de- flated transactions recorded on Zillow.com. I deal with the potential reverse causality between the economic status and the gangster’s position in the network exploiting exogenous exposure to potential pre-immigration connections. In the absence of pre-immigration data I use the informational content of surnames, called isonomy, to measure the place of origin. The instrument is valid as long as conditional on the characteristics of the gang- sters (including his region of birth) such exposure influences the gangsters’ position inside the network but not the preference for specific housing needs. A standard deviation increase in closeness centrality increases economic status by about one standard deviation (100 percent). Keywords: Mafia, Networks, Centrality, Housing Prices, Value of Connections, Crime, Surnames, Isonomy. JEL classification codes: A14, C21, D23, D85, K42, Z13 ∗I would like to thank Edoardo Gallo and Michele Pellizzari for their comments. Late Medieval Maltese Surnames of Arabic and Greek Origin Geoffrey Hull [email protected]
Late Medieval Maltese Surnames of Arabic and Greek Origin Geoffrey Hull [email protected] Abstract: As a contribution to the historical study of Maltese and Greater Sicilian onomastics, this article is an analysis of fifteenth-century Maltese surnames of low frequency (5 or less occurrences in the militia lists of 1419 and 1480) which are of certain Greek or Arabic origin. Each surname is analysed in terms of its etymology, meaning and known geographical distribution in Sicily or elsewhere in Italy. Keywords: Albanian, Algeria, Apulia, Arabic, Calabria, Catalan, Classical Arabic, Greek, Iberian, Islam, ism names, Italian, Italy, kunya names, laqab names, Lebanon, Maghrebine Arabic, Medieval Malta, nasab names, nicknames, nisba names, Norman French, onomastics, Padanian, Romance languages, Salento, Sicily, Siculo-Arabic, Siculo-Greek, toponyms, Tunisia, Tuscan. he comprehensive Maltese militia rosters dating from between 1417 and 1480 and edited by Godfrey Wettinger in 1968 have Tprovided historians and linguists with invaluable insights into the ethnological conditions prevailing in the island at the end of the Middle Ages, a time when vestiges of the island’s Arabic and Islamic past (beginning at the earliest in the late ninth century) had been overlaid and submerged by a new Latin and Catholic cultural order based in Sicily.1 Following on from important contributions by Stanley Fiorini and Mario Cassar,2 the present writer in a recent study analysed in terms 1 G. Wettinger, ‘The Distribution of Surnames in Malta in 1419 and the
