Courtesy Richard Hatch. According to Hatch, growing up gay, being part of a minority community--and thus subject to scrutiny by others--inspired him to be both introspective and egocentric. These dual poles of introspection and egocentrism are, in fact, key elements in understanding the important roles gay men and lesbians play within the confines of reality television shows, even as they present interpretive quandaries for hetero- and homosexual viewers alike. In a typical reality television show, particularly one with game-show trappings such as CBS's Survivor and Big Brother, or ABC's The Mole, cast members as well as viewers regard introspection as suspicious behavior. Surely, the viewers surmise, something is being hatched under that quiet façade, and usually this supposition is proved correct. For these shows' gay and lesbian participants, however, the conflation of introspection with cunning and plotting too easily becomes connected to the unfortunate stereotype that gay men and lesbians are inherently crafty, conniving, and untrustworthy. Even in ostensibly less competitive shows such as Bravo's Boy Meets Boy, Fox's Playing It Straight, and even MTV's "docusoap"--Sam Brenton and Reuben Cohen's neologism for a television show that seamlessly combines elements of documentary realism with soap opera-style plotting--The Real World, introspection is often seen as a negative attribute, indicating moodiness, insecurity, or simmering hostility.

MTV’s The Real World, a reality TV show that first aired in 1992, captures the lives of seven young people between the ages of 18-24 that are selected to live in a house together for several months. The show’s dramatic the opening title sequence, “what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real?” raises fundamental questions about the relationship of reality TV and the politics of representation, as well as about the relationship between the subjects represented in reality TV and its viewers and consumers. Ohman combines a critical narrative analysis with critical theories of representation and identity politics. In particular, she draws on queer theory and the work of cultural studies scholar Stuart Hall to examine The Real World show, highlighting how representation in the media has become a vital tool for viewers to help validate their subjectivity and subject- positions within the LGBTQ community.

Failed Active Listening in The Real World: A Study of Dominance in Casual Conversation Tamara Jones Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) School of Education, University of Sheffield September, 2010 ii Abstract Native-English speakers generally appreciate a certain amount of supportive feedback from their listeners. However, occasionally, a positive listener response actually causes the speaker to become threatened and revert to floor-saving measures. Speakers whose first language is not English may be at a disadvantage when involved in interactions with native-English speakers because they may not be equipped with the tools to exercise conversational power, if they wish to do so. Consequently, with the goal of creating educational materials that can be easily used in English Language Teaching (ELT), this thesis examines instances of listener support which are not appreciated by the speaker. For my corpus, I pulled 69 conversations from a popular American reality TV show, The Real World. These conversations were selected because of the presence of floor-saving strategies in the wake of seemingly benign listener commentary.

REALITY / TV / CELEBRITY David Raskin A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Communication Studies. Chapel Hill 2006 Approved by Advisor: Richard C. Cante Reader: Carole Blair Reader: Lawrence Grossberg ABSTRACT DAVID RASKIN: Reality / TV / Celebrity (Under the direction of Richard C. Cante) This research addresses the construction of personae on reality television series. Given Richard Dyer’s formulation of stardom as a balance of ordinary and extraordinary qualities, this paper seeks to understand how a reality television participant, lacking any traditional performance talent, could be articulated as extraordinary. Kenneth Burke’s concept of “mystery” as a desirability attached to objects atop a social hierarchy is used to help explicate the qualities of extraordinariness in reality TV stardom. Comparative formal analyses of three reality “star texts” delineate the differences between two women who attain limited fame and one who achieves wider stardom. It is concluded that two qualities are necessary to transcending the usual limits of reality television fame: the articulation of social power (closely tied to class); and the appearance of freedom and agency, even when under the constant surveillance of producers and camera operators. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe a debt of gratitude to a number of colleagues and friends who have informed and responded to my ideas during this writing process, but none more than Rich Cante and Scott Selberg. I also would not have come to this particular project without Dee Jacobs and Matt Zankowski, whose tastes helped me to find the diamond in the pablum.
