REALITY / TV / CELEBRITY David Raskin A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Communication Studies. Chapel Hill 2006 Approved by Advisor: Richard C. Cante Reader: Carole Blair Reader: Lawrence Grossberg ABSTRACT DAVID RASKIN: Reality / TV / Celebrity (Under the direction of Richard C. Cante) This research addresses the construction of personae on reality television series. Given Richard Dyer’s formulation of stardom as a balance of ordinary and extraordinary qualities, this paper seeks to understand how a reality television participant, lacking any traditional performance talent, could be articulated as extraordinary. Kenneth Burke’s concept of “mystery” as a desirability attached to objects atop a social hierarchy is used to help explicate the qualities of extraordinariness in reality TV stardom. Comparative formal analyses of three reality “star texts” delineate the differences between two women who attain limited fame and one who achieves wider stardom. It is concluded that two qualities are necessary to transcending the usual limits of reality television fame: the articulation of social power (closely tied to class); and the appearance of freedom and agency, even when under the constant surveillance of producers and camera operators. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe a debt of gratitude to a number of colleagues and friends who have informed and responded to my ideas during this writing process, but none more than Rich Cante and Scott Selberg. I also would not have come to this particular project without Dee Jacobs and Matt Zankowski, whose tastes helped me to find the diamond in the pablum.

WOMEN AND REALITY TV IN EVERDAY LIFE: TOWARD A POLITICAL ECONOMY OF BODIES A dissertation presented to the faculty of the Scripps College of Communication of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Danielle M. Stern June 2007 This dissertation entitled WOMEN AND REALITY TV IN EVERDAY LIFE: TOWARD A POLITICAL ECONOMY OF BODIES by DANIELLE M. STERN has been approved for the School of Telecommunications and the Scripps College of Communication by Norma Pecora Associate Professor of Telecommunications Gregory J. Shepherd Dean, Scripps College of Communication Abstract STERN, DANIELLE M., Ph.D, June 2007, Mass Communications WOMEN AND REALITY TV IN EVERYDAY LIFE: TOWARD A POLITICAL ECONOMY OF BODIES (216 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Norma Pecora By moving beyond the representation of “women” in specific texts and locating the body as a critical site of meaning in a hybrid televisual genre—narrative reality television—this dissertation challenges assumptions about production, text, audience, and researcher. Drawing from existing theories of the body and political economy in the feminist and critical rhetoric literature and using MTV’s popular long-running program The Real World as a case study, this dissertation examines the interrelationship of the construction and consumption of bodies in an increasingly surveillance-based, commercial, hybrid media culture. Twenty college-aged women viewers of The Real World wrote brief journal entries to episodes of the program prior to participating in individual interviews. Additionally, the researcher conducted interviews with four creative directors of the program. Finally, the interviews informed a rhetorical analysis of the 25 episodes of the seventeenth season of The Real World, set in Key West, which aired from February to August 2006.

  • Renewing Hollywood's Media Colony in Southern Reality
CAN YOU SAY IT MORE SOUTHERN?: RENEWING HOLLYWOOD’S MEDIA COLONY IN SOUTHERN REALITY TELEVISION by ROBERT THEODORE MCWHORTER CHAMPION JEREMY BUTLER, COMMITTEE CHAIR JASON EDWARD BLACK ROBIN M. BOYLORN JOLENE HUBBS MATTHEW PAYNE A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the College of Communication and Information Sciences in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2016 Copyright Robert Theodore McWhorter Champion 2016 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Recent reality television programming has reawakened the popular use of the American South and, specifically, working-class white southerners, for mass entertainment purposes. Nonfiction media have historically represented the South as a distinct and often inferior region of the United States, and an occasional critic has attempted to raise concerns about the disenfranchisement of a subculture of people, but scholars have yet to conduct major research on southern-themed reality shows. Using multidisciplinary approaches, this dissertation examines how nonfiction media have exploited and are currently exploiting the image of the working-class white southerner. As both southern media historian and an active practitioner in the television industry, I have a unique perspective that allows me to address this current trend and its potential problems. I begin the research by surveying prior nonfiction media dating back to the 18th century. This understanding of past publishing, journalism, films, and broadcasting helps identify specific conventions that media producers have historically applied to the mediated South. Countless stereotypes include excessive drinking, obesity, indecency, and anti-intellectualism. I then closely examine three recent reality television series, analyzing how these past conventions are transformed for modern audiences.
