  • Face Attack in Italian Politics: Beppe Grillo's Insulting Epithets
1 Face attack in Italian politics: Beppe Grillo’s insulting epithets for other politicians1 ABSTRACT The second largest party in the Italian Parliament, the “5-Star Movement” is led by comedian-turned-politician Beppe Grillo. Grillo is well-known for a distinctive and often inflammatory rhetoric, which includes the regular use of humorous but insulting epithets for other politicians, such as Psiconano (“Psychodwarf”) for Silvio Berlusconi. This paper discusses a selection of epithets used by Grillo on his blog between 2008 and 2015 to refer to Berlusconi and three successive centre-left leaders. We account for the functions of the epithets in terms of Spencer-Oatey’s (2002, 2008) multi- level model of “face” and of Culpeper’s (2011) “entertaining” and “coercive” functions of impoliteness. We suggest that our study has implications for existing models of face and impoliteness and for an understanding of the evolving role of verbal aggression in Italian politics. 1. Introduction In the 2013 Italian general election, just under a quarter of the votes went to Il Movimento Cinque Stelle (The 5-Star Movement, or M5S) – a new political entity which had been founded four years before by comedian- turned-politician Beppe Grillo. One of the distinctive characteristics of Grillo’s language as leader of M5S is the coinage of humorous but insulting epithets for other politicians. Below is an extract from an online ‘political communiqué’ written by Grillo shortly after the 2008 general election: I partiti erano uno e bino, psiconano e Topo Gigio. PDL e PD-meno- elle […].(Grillo, n.d., Communiqué number 13) “The parties were one and two-in-one, psychodwarf and Gigio Mouse.

KING'S RANSOM Douglas King is rich. A nice house in the best part of the city, servants, big cars, fashionable clothes for his attractive wife, Diane. He's worked hard all his life to get where he is today, and now he's planning a big business deal. It's a very expensive deal, and there are enemies working against King, but if he wins, he'll get to be company president. If he doesn't win, he'll be out on the street. Sy Barnard and Eddie Folsom are not rich. They're small- time crooks, not very successful, but they want all the good things that money can buy. So they plan the perfect kidnapping. 'Five hundred thousand dollars by tomorrow morning, or we kill the boy,' they tell Douglas King. It's a beautiful plan. But Eddie's wife, Kathy, doesn't like it, and neither does Detective Steve Carella of the 87th Precinct. And Sy and Eddie have taken the wrong boy — not King's son, but the Reynolds boy, the son of King's chauffeur. And the chauffeur doesn't have five hundred thousand dollars. First things (literally) first: the front cover artwork is a) a gorgeous fantasy representation of Iron Man and b) completely not representative of anything else in this issue. I saw it and I really wanted to put it on the front of the fanzine, and so I asked the artist – *theDURRRRIAN on deviantART – who kindly gave permission. It’s a short editorial this issue, since I’ve just been ill for a week preceding my trip to Chicon 7 (so excited!) and so I have a pretty packed to do list as a result. I also had to cut a page to make the page count divide by four, so the editorial seemed ripe for the cutting (especially as I never actually really know what to say here). Thanks must go this issue to many people; Mark, for making me giggle and forcing me to come up with my own peanut butter/ syringe artwork; Taral, for the horrific idea of voice-operated Photoshop; and Mette for her epic piece and accompanying images. I hope you enjoy her descent into cowboy fandom as much as I did. See you in the bar! John Procrastinations is edited by John Coxon. Issue #11 published on Wednesday 29th August, 2012. Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1.
