The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Communications COMPETITION AND PROGRAM TYPE DIVERSITY IN THE OVER-THE-AIR TELEVISION INDUSTRY, 1943-2005 A Thesis in Mass Communications by Young Shin Cho © 2007 Young Shin Cho Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2007 The thesis of Young-Shin Cho was reviewed and approved* by the following: Richard Taylor Palmer Chair of Telecommunications Studies and Law Thesis Advisor Chair of Committee Matt Jackson Associate Professor of Communications Krishna Jayakar Associate Professor of Communications Lynette Kvasny Assistant Professor of Information Sciences and Technology John S. Nichols Professor of Communications Associate Dean for Graduates Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ABSTRACT Competition and diversity are touchstones in media policy, but the relationship between them is not clear despite a great number of studies because even studies dealing with their relationship, did not measure the intensity of competition. This paper investigates the relationship between market competition and program type diversity in the over-the-air television industry. Specifically, market competition is divided into intra-network competition and intra-media competition, i.e. terrestrial television vs. cable TV. Also this paper uses a comprehensive model of program types, with 281 program type categories, which have never been used in previous studies. The results show that program type diversity keeps decreasing over time and intra-network competition has a negative effect on program type diversity. Also, intra- network competition is a more important factor on program type diversity than inter- media competition. -

Daily Courier We e k’sWor th THE TV MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 25-OCTOBER 1, 2021 Nathan Fillion returns as THE ROOKIE for a fourth season on CBS ‘The Rookie’ returns after cliffhanger drama By Kyla Brewer TV Media Cop shows have been around practically since the dawn of television, and there’s still nothing quite like a good police drama, especially one with a nail-biting cliffhanger season finale. After months of waiting, anxious fans will finally find out what happens when a prime-time hit returns to the airwaves. Nathan Fillion reprises his role as John Nolan, a cop who sets out to find a col- league after she goes missing in the sea- son premiere of “The Rookie,” airing Sun- day on ABC. The debut marks the fourth season of the hour-long drama centered on Nolan, a 40-something cop — and oldest rookie in the history of the LAPD — who works at the Mid-Wilshire Division of the Los Ange- les Police Department. The police drama is the latest in a string of hits for Canadian-American actor Fillion, who rose to fame as Capt. Mal- colm Reynolds in the cult favorite TV series “Firefly” and its subsequent spinoff film, “Serenity” (2005), and as sleuthing mystery writer Richard Castle in the ABC crime drama “Castle.” Born and raised in Edmonton, Fillion moved south to pursue a career in acting, landing roles in TV shows “One Life to Live” and “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place” and in the movie “Saving Private Ryan” (1998). Now, he’s leading the cast of one of prime time’s highest-rated network series: “The Rookie.” At the end of last season, pregnant Det. -
Alias Smith and Jones
Studen’ts Last Name 1 Student’s Name Professor Stacy Taylor English 102-Essay 1 30 August 2011 Alias Smith and Jones Alias Smith and Jones is a television series set in the late 19th century airing on ABC from January 5, 1971 until January 13, 1973. Starring Pete Duel as Hannibal Heyes and Ben Murphy as Jed “Kid” Curry, the series could be seen mainly on Thursday nights, with a total of 50 episodes during its three seasons. Set in a classic buddy adventure style, Alias Smith and Jones is about two outlaws trying to reform themselves and gain amnesty. Geared to appeal to the audience that had enjoyed the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” this series delivers that same brand of entertainment. The series provides the viewer with all of the elements of a good western, such as gambling, gunfights, saloons, horse chases, outlaws, and drama, all while adding a touch of humor along the way. Classic Alias Smith and Jones episodes can be viewed over the Internet. Hulu.com was a good resource to watch various episodes. I chose to watch “Alias Smith and Jones:Pilot”, “The McCreedy Bust”, and “The Biggest Game in the West”, which were all good examples of the series. As former outlaws, Heyes and Curry are constantly trying to stay out of trouble, yet it seems to always find them. Each one uses his unique talents to keep them out of trouble, though those talents are often what creates the trouble in the first place. The law is always watching and on the lookout for them, but they seem to just miss being caught with a little help from their Studen’ts Last Name 2 friends. -
