It took three nights, thanks to rainouts, for Dade City to eliminate Zephyrhills in the Major Baseball All-Star Tournament District 13. Dade City made it to the championship of that double-elimination series before losing 11-1 to host Land O’ Lakes. “It was a mess trying to play that,” Dade City coach Clark Evans said. The title game actually was moved from Land O’ Lakes to Dade City and played on a Friday night after yet another rain delay. Coaches and league officials prepared the field at John S. Burks Memorial Park. “There were a lot of tournaments starting Saturday, so we had to get the game in,” Evans said. For Zephyrhills, the Dade City game was a rematch. Dade City won the opening game, 14-2 against Zephyrhills, which in between the Dade City games beat Progress Village 12-2. “We’re the only ones who went 1-2,” said Zephyrhills coach Darryl Oney, alluding to his team’s record compared to two oth- er Zephyrhills all-star squads that did not win a game. Dade City finished the tourney with a 2-2 record. Aside from beating Zephyrhills twice the team lost twice to Land O’ Lakes, which included a close 8-7 defeat earlier. “We did pretty well against Zephyrhills,” Evans said, add- ing that against Land O’ Lakes “I just don’t think we were at their level.” Leading the offense for Dade City in the four games were Eli Evans, Emilio Jauregui, Carson Wheatley and Jayden Manei- ro. Dade City was deep in pitching with six players taking the mound at various times. The Dade City Major Softball team, which included Zephyr- hills players Kiara Little, Shelby Steavens, McKenzie Dean and Senae Davis, bowed out of its series in two games. They lost 20-2 and 6-4, both games coming against Land O’ Lakes. “They came together and stayed positive,” Dade City coach Christopher Harvey said of that second game, adding that his players focused on family and team. In the Cal Ripken League, Wesley Chapel’s 10U all-star baseball team won a District 13 title. They came out of the loser’s bracket after a loss to Fishhawk, then defeated East Bay twice — 4-0 and 3-2 — for the championship. Wesley Chapel went 6-1 and outscored the opposition by a whopping 56-11 margin in their series. “I was so proud of them,” coach Trevor Rhodes said. “The whole team is solid, from top to bottom. We prided ourselves in having a well-rounded team where everyone contributes.” Wesley Chapel relied on pitching depth to win its title. Trey Moye, Luke Cepeda, Jack Green, Mark Redden, Levi Cohen, Lu- cas Mendez and Aiden Alexander all saw time on the mound. Behind the plate for every game was Dempsey Rhodes, the coach’s son.
