Anti-Muslim Hatred and Discrimination Submission from Dia Kayyali Associate Director of Advocacy at Mnemonic, independent consultant on technology and human rights, and co-chair of the Christchurch Call Advisory Network1 [email protected] Summary: This submission focuses on the online aspect of anti-Muslim hatred and discrimination (Islamophobia). Content that incites violence against Muslims is too often left up on major social media platforms, while important content produced by Muslims is often removed. This leads to diminishing opportunities for justice in conflict zones such as Syria, while facilitating increased violence against Muslim communities around the world. Furthermore, online content is never solely online. Rather, it is intimately linked to violence and discrimination against Muslims in a harmful feedback loop. How the online feeds into the offline and back again, creating a vicious cycle The online component of Islamophobia has deadly consequences for Muslims around the world. At the same time, predominantly Muslim communities see content they post online regularly removed by major social media companies. Islamophobia, like other social ills, is stuck in a dangerous feedback loop. Offline discrimination and violence lead to online hate speech and dangerous speech. This content then worsens discrimination, and sometimes directly incites offline violence and other negative consequences. The cycle is self-perpetuating, and it is deadly. Muslim lives have already been lost as a result, and Islamophobia threatens other essential human rights including freedoms of expression and religion. Who is Muslim? Islamophobia doesn’t just impact Muslims. As outlined in this submission, it also impacts people who are secular or practice other religions but are in Muslim majority countries or communities. -

Ethics & Bioethics (in Central Europe), 2019, 9 (3–4), 190–196 DOI:10.2478/ebce-2019-0013 A bitter diagnostic of the ultra-liberal human: Michel Houellebecq on some ethical issues Zuzana Malinovská1 & Ján Živčák2 Abstract The paper examines the ethical dimensions of Michel Houellebecq’s works of fiction. On the basis of keen diagnostics of contemporary Western culture, this world-renowned French writer predicts the destructive social consequences of ultra-liberalism and enters into an argument with transhumanist theories. His writings, depicting the misery of contemporary man and imagining a new human species enhanced by technologies, show that neither the so-called neo-humans nor the “last man” of liberal democracies can reach happiness. The latter can only be achieved if humanist values, shared by previous generations and promoted by the great 19th-century authors (Balzac, Flaubert), are reinvented. Keywords: contemporary French literature, ultra-liberalism, humanism, transhumanism, end of man Introduction Since the time of Aristotle, the axiom of ontological inseparability and mutual compatibility of aesthetics and ethics within a literary work has been widely accepted by literary theorists. Even the (apparent) absence of ethics espoused by some adherents of extreme formalist experiments around the middle and in the second half of the 20th century (e.g. the ‘Tel Quel’ group) presupposes an ethical positioning. In France, forms of literary expression which accord high priority to ethical/moral questioning have a significant tradition. The so-called “ethical generation”, writing mainly in the 1930s (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Georges Bernanos, André Malraux, etc.), is clear evidence of this. At present, the French author whose ethical as well as aesthetic positions generate probably the most controversy is Michel Houellebecq (Clément & Wesemael, 2007). -

The Future is Gothic: Elements of Gothic in Dystopian Novels Amy Cartwright PhD Submission Submitted to Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow Department of English Literature August 2005 © Amy Cartwright August 2005 Abstract This thesis explores the relationship between the Gothic tradition and Dystopian novels in order to illuminate new perspectives on the body in Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland (1915), Aldous Huxley's Brave New World(] 932), George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty- Four (1949), Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange (1962), Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale (1985) and Michel Houellebecq's Atomised (1999). The key concerns are those of the Labyrinth, Dark Places, Connectedness and the Loss of the Individual, Live Burials, Monsters and Fragmented Flesh. A thematic approach allows for the novels to be brought together under common Gothic themes in order to show not only that they have such tendencies, but that they share common ground as Gothic Dystopias. While the focus is on bodily concerns in these novels, it is also pertinent to offer a discussion of past critical perspectives on the Dystopia and this is undertaken in Chapter One: `Unearthing the Past'. Chapter Two, `Labyrinths of Time and Bodies', looks at the narrative structure of the novels and finds similarities in presentation to Gothic novels, which leads to exploration of the position of the body in such a narrative of the unseen. 'Dark Places' is the third chapter of this thesis and looks to the spaces inhabited by characters in the novels to examine their impact on the threat faced by these individuals. The Gothic convention of doubling is the focus of Chapter Four, `Connectedness and the Loss of the Individual', which finds not only doubling operating in Dystopian novels, but the more complex relationship of triangles of doubling holding characters, fixing them in relation to those around at the expense of selfhood. -

Jihadist Foreign Fighter Phenomenon in Western Europe: A Low-Probability, High-Impact Threat Edwin Bakker and Jeanine de Roy van Zuijdewijn ICCT Research Paper October 2015 The phenomenon of foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq is making headlines. Their involvement in the atrocities committed by terrorist groups such as the so-called “Islamic State” and Jabhat al-Nusra have caused grave concern and public outcry in the foreign fighters’ European countries of origin. While much has been written about these foreign fighters and the possible threat they pose, the impact of this phenomenon on Western European societies has yet to be documented. This Research Paper by Edwin Bakker and Jeanine De Roy van Zuijdewijn explores four particular areas where this impact is most visible: a) violent incidents associated with (returned) foreign fighters, b) official and political responses linked to these incidents, c) public opinion, and d) anti-Islam reactions linked to these incidents. The authors conclude that the phenomenon of jihadist foreign fighters in European societies should be primarily regarded as a social and political threat, not a physical one. They consider the phenomenon of European jihadist foreign fighters a “low-probability, high-impact” threat. About the Authors Edwin Bakker is Professor of (Counter-)Terrorism Studies at Leiden University, Director of the Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism (CTC) of that same university and Research Fellow at ICCT. He studied Economic Geography (Netherlands) and Political Geography (Netherlands and Germany). In 1997, he defended his PhD thesis on minority conflicts in Slovakia and Hungary. He taught classes in international policies on preventing and managing separatism and intra-state war in the Balkans at the Centre for International Conflict Analysis and Management (CICAM), Nijmegen University. -

Houellebecq’s Priapism: The Failure of Sexual Liberation in Michel Houellebecq’s Novels and Essays Benjamin Boysen University of Southern Denmark The truth is scandalous. But nothing is worth anything without it. 477 (Rester vivant 27) Jed had never had such an erection; it was truly painful. (The Map and the Territory 51; translation modified) In the following, I will argue that Michel Houellebecq’s essays and novels give voice to what I would label priapism. Houellebecq’s dire analysis of postmodern societies and the malaise of the Western instinctual structure, and his vehement critique of the sexual liberation of the sixties as well as of Western individualism and liberalism are well known and well documented.1 However, here I want to draw special atten- tion to the way his texts embody an unusually bizarre and latently self-contradictory position of priapism. Priapism is a notion extremely well suited to the ways in which Houellebecq’s novels and essays portray an involuntary desire or libido that is ordered from outside the subject, and thus is unfree. Priapism is a medical diagnosis for chronic erection not caused by physical, psychological, or erotic stimuli. It is poten- tially a harmful state, often quite painful. Untreated, the prognosis is impotence. For an outside party, the condition seems to designate lust for life, excitation, and plea- sure, but the patient feels the opposite: pain, humiliation, and despair. Presenting a vision of a post-industrial neoliberal consumer society obsessed with pleasure and desire, dictating how the individual must desire and enjoy, Houellebecq’s art dis- closes how Western societies’ instinctual structure entails an alienated, stressed, and frustrated libido. -

Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies 43.2 September 2017: 297-324 DOI: 10.6240/concentric.lit.2017.43.2.13 “To Stand a Chance”: Quantum Uncertainty and Religious Conversion in Michel Houellebecq’s Submission Molly Schwartz School of Arts and Communication Malmö University, Sweden Abstract Michel Houellebecq’s novel, Submission (2015), is structured around the speculative premise that in the year 2022 the Muslim Brotherhood could become the dominant political party in France, leading to a society-wide shift in values and practices. This paper explores how Houellebecq uses religious conversion in the novel as a literary metaphor for quantum uncertainty. By lacing the patchwork plot with ambiguity and satire, Houellebecq tries to reconcile the random and predetermined elements of human actions, given the physical reality of our atom- based world and existence. Against the background of his selfish male and female characters, Houellebecq plays with the possibility of transcending the pitifulness of the contemporary human condition, which both he and his characters ultimately achieve not through religion but through fiction. Interpreting Submission in the context of theories about the unpredictable, computational nature of the universe raises interesting questions about the programmability of human behavior and the use of speculative fiction as a tool for generating alternative futures. 1 Solutions to the Problems of Western Civilisation in the Novels of Michel Houellebecq Timothy Peter Gouldthorp B.A (English) B.A (French) Honours Class 1 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2017 School of Languages and Cultures 2 Abstract This thesis argues that the novels of controversial French author Michel Houellebecq not only diagnose profound problems in contemporary Western civilisation, but also envisage the possibility of resolving them. Many studies do not believe that Houellebecq’s novels propose any genuine solutions, and those that do arguably do not take into consideration the extent to which solutions in the novels emerge through a sustained reflection on the underlying causes of contemporary social problems. Previous studies have understandably focused on problems such as social atomisation, commodification of individuals as objects of erotic consumption, the breakdown of community and family life and the loss of transcendental values. However, these studies have tended to consider these problems within their specific social context. This thesis, in contrast, aims to show that Houellebecq’s novels frame contemporary social phenomena within a much broader biological and historical perspective. Taking this approach, it reveals that Houellebecq’s novels are able to envisage solutions precisely because they look beyond an apparently intractable social reality to its conceivably modifiable biological and historical bases. The thesis focuses on the following four novels: Les Particules élémentaires (1998), La Possibilité d’une île (2005), La Carte et le territoire (2010) and Soumission (2015). After situating Houellebecq’s novels within a naturalistic tradition in the introduction, it shows, through a close reading of Les Particules élémentaires and La Possibilité d’une île, how Houellebecq envisages the creation of posthuman beings through the use of speculative biotechnology as a possible, albeit problematic, solution to the problems listed above. -
